Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Balance bikes effectively teach children how to ride
I never even had to push him! 😁
+1 - balance bikes work! 100% agree.
Way to go dad. Balance bikes are absolutely the way to go.
She practiced on the Strider for 3 weeks and then immediately picked up pedals.
Quick transition to pedal bikes
Absolutely. Transitioned our 4.5yr old to a pedal bike and she had it in 30mins.
Two of my 3 kids never wanted to do anything more than walk on the balance bike, so never developed the required balance until they were too big for the balance bike.
Encourages early riding skills
He hasn't looked back.
He could chase the bigger kids and learned to negotiate terrain.
Customizable name plate adds personal touch
I have been pretty firmly anti-scooter because of how dangerous they can be but I am wondering if it’s less dangerous depending on where the child is using it and if the scooter has 3 wheels instead of 2.
Do you recommend balance bikes? And what is the best age to start? For me it makes sense to start 100% focused in the balance, but I have no idea if there's any disadvantage of having no pedals.
Good to know that. I don't have contact with anyone that used this method, but I really enjoy when the little fellas show that they understand the concept of riding a bike when they lift their feet from the ground.
Helps develop balance and coordination
No disadvantage, they're great! Kids can start around 2.
Yes. It will make riding an actual bike so much easier… like, it took my kid 5 minutes because he already had the balancing part down.
I always seem to favor leaning to the right the moment I try to get on.
Put the seat as low as you can, take the pedals off and use it like a kid's balance bike until you get the feel for it.
Easy transition to pedal bikes
Just make sure that the next bike up is not too big for them to handle and they will surprise you with their competence.
Lightweight balance bikes are easier to carry
You want as light as you can afford as you'll be carrying it half the time.
I was just going to mention that my kids got frustrated with the wooden one because it is heavy! (And I didn’t love schlepping it to the park either).
The strider has been awesome bc my oldest could carry it up a hill since 2.
Balance bikes are lighter and easier to carry
a balance bike is also lighter, and less likely to whack you in the shins with the pedals.
Balance bike. The physics are wrong for kids to have pedals at that age: their legs are so short they need to be able to generate immense pressure to turn the pedals and they expend all their effort doing that and don't have enough brain space for anything else.
I was so happy with how light the first balance bike was. Didn't give me tennis elbow flare ups or anything, and I could carry the crying child and the bike at the same time, if absolutely necessary.
Helps children develop balance and coordination quickly
Someone else explained it but balancing is the hard part - not pedaling.
A balance bike will help your kid learn to maintain balance, the main skill needed to ride a bicycle.
A balance bike allows the child to go further and further with just balance but can put their feet down at any moment if they feel uneasy.
Allows for quick transition to regular bikes
it made the transition to a regular bike (without stabilisers) really quick.
Balance bikes are the best option now a days
Encourages outdoor activity and fun
Our 2.25 year old loves his balance bike.
I’ve been brainstorming places near us that would be a better practicing ground and maybe we’ll start there with the balance bike he already has.
Lightweight bikes are easier for kids to handle
it is best if the bike you do this with is lightweight so kid can easily maneuver it.
Balance bikes effectively teach children balance first
Riding with my son – from balance bike to shredding singletracks by the age of 5
Anyone here with kids....balance bike will change your life. They learn the balance first.
Encourages outdoor activity and fun for kids
What an awesome video to see your sons development through time with his bike.
Balance bikes are great because they start way younger.
Balance bikes are effective for early riding skills
Balance bikes seem to be a no brainer improvement over training wheels.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Kids may show minimal interest at first
neither of my kids got the hang of it lol.
Once they are riding them move on to a cheep little kids bike.
Some balance bikes are hard to adjust
I hate trying to adjust our classic, which I’m always having to do when they want to switch bikes.
Balance bikes may not be suitable for very young children
Are they safe? Will it delay him walking unaided?
Newly 1 might be a little young for a balance bike.
If he’s not walking unaided already, I’m not sure he can really use a balance bike yet.
A balance bike won’t work for a one year old. My very coordinated early walker wasn’t getting it till he was two-something.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Personal stories of transitioning from balance to pedal bikes
That’s smart, gonna steal that advice for the twins
I have all these friends whose 18 months old were riding their balance bikes around dirt bike parks and it took my kid til 3 to care at all about it.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Advice on seat height for comfort and safety
raise that seat up. Your child is pulling their knees up very high and this impacts the power, balance, and pedalling cadence quite a bit.
Recommendations for various brands and models
We got the woom 2 as the first pedal bike and have been immensely pleased.
Strider bikes really do hold their value second hand as you can likely see in your area as well.
Advice on finding flat areas for practice
No, balance bikes are not the only way to learn.
Its flat, has lines to try to stay in between and great for ditching into the grass if needed as the grass/grounds are usually well kept and not rocky.
Suggestions for secondhand balance bikes
Buy secondhand. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I bought mine for €15
Advice on learning bike balance techniques
Try not to think of the bike seat as a chair to sit on. Think of the three points of contact holding you up equally: handlebars, pedals, and seat.
Just wanted to confirm this: I'm 28, I just learned how to ride a bike 2 months ago with this method, after YEARS of being told "don't worry, just go faster and you won't fall off!" or "you'll get it as soon as we try a hill!"
Personal experiences with balance bikes and age appropriateness
Water table and sand box were a HUGE hit at that age!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Personal stories of kids learning to ride
I learned how to ride a bike when I was 8.
General thoughts on developing skills over time
Tbh it's awesome to see anyone not depressed.
Heartwarming experiences shared by parents
That’s goddamn heartwarming. You Father the shit outta that little dude!
Discussion about the evolution of learning tools for kids
Libraries are not new generation, but I think they've adapted very well.
Personal stories of learning to ride
I think that psychologically it was VERY IMPORTANT to me to not approach this as a "I can't call it a day until I can really bike" task.
Just remove those pedals, put yourself on a slight downward slope and push yourself along and balance until you get the hang of it.
