Helps children master balance and coordination
Balance bikes work, y’all! Proud dad here - Our 4 1/2 yr old is riding a bike!
Way to go dad. Balance bikes are absolutely the way to go.
He loves it now.
He learned to push faster and coast longer. He could chase the bigger kids and learned to negotiate terrain.
Easy transition to pedal bikes
+1 - balance bikes work! 100% agree.
Absolutely. Transitioned our 4.5yr old to a pedal bike and she had it in 30mins.
She practiced on the Strider for 3 weeks and then immediately picked up pedals.
if they’ll actually run/glide on the balance bike then it’s awesome.
Lightweight design is beneficial for carrying
You want as light as you can afford as you'll be carrying it half the time.
I was just going to mention that my kids got frustrated with the wooden one because it is heavy! (And I didn’t love schlepping it to the park either). I second the recommendation for “as light as you can make it.”
The strider has been awesome bc my oldest could carry it up a hill since 2.
Sometimes it's the paint on the frame, sometimes the clamp is compressed down because they screwed the bolt in too tight when they assembled it and it sat on a shelf for 5 years.
Effective method for learning balance
Put the seat as low as you can, take the pedals off and use it like a kid's balance bike until you get the feel for it.
Just wanted to confirm this: I'm 28, I just learned how to ride a bike 2 months ago with this method, after YEARS of being told "don't worry, just go faster and you won't fall off!" or "you'll get it as soon as we try a hill!"
Yup, this. It works: you get the feel of how the bike balances itself, the way the steering feels, and you *don't* worry about falling.
Helps children skip training wheels
I can't believe anyone wouldn't have their little kids on a balance bike unless they're just oblivious to them or something.

Provides helpful tips for parents choosing balance bikes
Great tips! My daughter is soon 2 and we are getting her a balance bike, so this was super helpful!
Balance bikes help children avoid crashes and injuries compared to training wheels.
I've seen too many kids crash to support training wheels. I do, however, see kids shredding the local bike park on balance bikes.
He hated the pedal bike.
Ideal for children in bike-friendly environments.
And there's never enough bike parking at the local breakfast place.
Different learning styles mean balance bikes work for some kids.
using a balance bike doesn’t translate to knowing how to pedal.

Minimal initial interest from some children

Adjustment difficulty in some models
I hate trying to adjust our classic, which I’m always having to do when they want to switch bikes.

3 days, 15 minutes a day.
It might be hard at first but the faster you go, the more difficult it is to lean/fall over.
Try not to think of the bike seat as a chair to sit on. Think of the three points of contact holding you up equally: handlebars, pedals, and seat.

He used the bike 3 times and hated it and demanded I take the training wheels off.
That’s smart, gonna steal that advice for the twins

We got the woom 2 as the first pedal bike and have been immensely pleased.
Strider bikes really do hold their value second hand as you can likely see in your area as well.
General reflections on childhood experiences with bikes
Yeah! I could ride my bike when I was four which makes me sad that some people can’t even RIDE a bike
I remember watching a motorcycle race and trying those lean turns. I could do loops in a tiny spot of a garage and every kid learned it from me.
I learned how to ride a bike when I was 8. I kind of just taught myself one day.
I feel you, I got multiple cuts trying to learn how to shave, first time changing a tire was pretty tough, I learned how to drive with a YouTube video lol.
Personal experiences learning to ride a bike
I never thought I’d ever be able to ride a bike so I just rode an old bike we had without pedals, “pretending” I was ‘riding a bike’.
Just remove those pedals, put yourself on a slight downward slope and push yourself along and balance until you get the hang of it.
Parents share mixed experiences with balance bikes versus training wheels.
We bought a balance bike for my son's first bike, thinking it would be great.
yes, everybody learns differently!
I found an adult cycling class and they taught us with Balance bikes and I was riding in 2 hours.
