What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Nontoxic cooking option
Cuisinart makes crappy products now. I brought a Bella one from BJ's a few years ago on clearance.
why did this happen was making chicken alfredo and the lid exploded. i have no idea why but i had to throw out a whole meal and slow cooker… very bummed, brand is bella cookware
Good customer service for product issues
the lid spontaneously exploded like that. I took pictures & prepared to pack it up & mail it away to the manufacturer, but when I called them, they just sent me a new cooker.
Affordable price for features offered
>Nah just wondering why? Because it is a good, reliable brand.
Good return policy at Costco for defective units
Costco Crockpot problems? Does any one else have issues with their Crockpot model that Costco sells?
You can take it back to Costco for up to a year for a full refund.
If you’re okay with bringing it back in the store, then Costco as a general rule will be ok facilitating the return.
Ideal size for meal prepping
5 qt is a good medium size for a slow cooker, it will work fine for the amount of chicken or fish you are talking about, and will also be big enough to make batches of soup or chili for a few days.
Durable and long-lasting performance
I have a Bella crockpot I bought at either Costco or Sam’s club in 2012 that still works perfectly
Ideal for slow cooking over long periods
How long for a crockpot to heat up fully on high? Cooking in a crockpot for the first time, it's been set to high for an hour and there's condensation on the lid and the side is warm, but the inside isn't boiling or anything.
It’s called a slow cooker for a reason, lol. You’re fine though it all sounds normal that’s just how they work.
Slow cookers are made to cook slow. Most things on high need to cook at least 4 hours and most things on low need to cook 6-10 hours.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Lid can shatter due to thermal stress
It’s the change it temperature too fast. Causes glass to shatter.
No vent hole in lid design
Very interesting, thanks for the info! I'll remember that from now on.
High cooking temperatures even on low setting
Yeah, I've heard the same about newer models having higher temp floors.
COSTCO Crockpot cooks to hot - here's why.
Issues with returning defective units
I am happy with mine but it doesnt boil on high like my last one did... but i guess they arent supposed to?
High cooking temperatures on low setting
Crock Pot seems to be too hot I feel like every recipe that i follow the food just kind of falls apart, almost like the low setting should be the high setting.
You're correct, High and Low are both about 210 to 220 degrees, Low takes about 5 to 6 hours to get there.
I just made pulled pork in an Instant Pot for the first time and couldn't figure out why the low temp slow cook setting was taking so long to get the job done.
Lid design can cause issues with cooking
The lid must lock down
Flimsy build quality leading to poor performance
At least I got them ridiculously cheap because each of them was garbage.
EVERYTHING stuck to them.
it burned everything, returned it and the second one did the same thing.
Slow cooker not heating properly
Your slowcooker is definitely messed up, if the temps are stabilizing around 140 then you should toss it and buy a new one
If you had it on high, then your slow cooker is broken.
Potential food safety issues
Food poisoning is a serious issue - it's particularly dangerous to older adults, children, pregnant women or people with compromised immune systems.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for traditional slow cookers over modern options
I cannot make it work the way my good old fashioned slow cooker does.
They’re bulletproof as long as you don’t break the ceramic insert.
the old analog ones with just "low, high, warm" seem to last forever.
Discussion on slow cooker sizes
Help for choosing the right size of slow cooker I want to buy for myself a slow cooker, and use it for cooking a whole fish or one or two chicken quarters.
Go big it's better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it
Definitely. We're not thinking commercial size here but a 7 quart isn't a bad move.
Your link says the product isn't available to me. Go for a 6qt. You don't have to fill it all the way up, and if you do you can just freeze what you won't eat in a few days for later.
Discussion about slow cooking times
14 hours on high is an insane amount of time to cook something in the slow cooker.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about alternative slow cooking methods
Given that it’s stainless steel I think it’s a pretty good option! And bonus, you don’t have to own two large items.
Super useful and versatile.
Discussion about rice cooking in slow cookers
Can you make rice with a slow cooker? I've heard so many great things about rice cookers lately, and I'm just wondering if something similar can be done in a slow cooker, and if anyone has any experience with this?
Not sure... however my rice cooker also has slow cooking capabilities. Best of both worlds.
3 hours is too long in my slow cooker. Mine only takes 1 hour for 2 cups of rice. So I’d say be careful and the first time you do this at home, check every half hour or so until the rice is done!
Interesting. My slow cooker cooks hot. I can cook most things (not big hunks of roast, etc) but chicken breast, etc in 3 hours. But when I do brown rice in the slow cooker it takes 3 hours to get to full fluffiness, with no mush.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Concerns about cleaning and cooling times
Yes! For me, it can take up to a week sometimes to cool down enough to wash it 🤪
Dang! Whut? Do you have an atomic reactor slow cooker? Any of mine would be cool enough (once unplugged) the next day.
Discussion on temperature settings across different slow cookers
I recently got the Hamilton Beach crock pot with a temperature gauge and it works MUCH better
The current rumour is manufacturers are afraid of being sued for food poisoning for undercooked meat so they cranked up the temperature to avoid that
hi will bring stews and stuff to a boil, but low won't regardless of how long I leave it on.
Discussion about the longevity of different brands
I've only had one problem with one cooking too hot...it is a Hamilton Beach, cook and travel model (locking lid for taking it on the go).
It still works amazing, and it's about 7 or 8 years old now.
Suggestions for maintaining slow cookers
Buy some of these liners/ dividers for $25 and it will prolong the life of your crockpot significantly.
Discussion on cooking time for meat tenderness
I think I would do the same for French dips.
Slow cooking is an option, but be careful if you add vinegar to this recipe.
The way this person bothered trying to cut the meat at the end of this video was fucking frustrating, it would would pull apart with fingers at that point.
I would much rather prefer a nicely cooked roast. Then sliced on a slicer or sliced really thin with a good knife.
Importance of slicing technique for sandwiches
Always cut ACROSS the grain of the meat when slicing it for sandwiches, so that when you bite, it comes apart.
If you go with the grain it won’t pull apart as easy. If you against the grain it will be much easier to pull apart.
you could also slice it much thinner than the recipe shows which would make it easier to bite through
Concerns about cleanliness and preparation
Actual cleanup isn't too bad with a clean bucket of sanitizer nearby.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about toxic materials in old cookers
Confirmed by crockpot customer support.
What is toxic about it? I haven’t looked into this
What’s toxic about it?
It's the Kleenex of slow cookers
Discussion on slow cooker lid design and safety
Mine is designed so it can't lay flat on a counter. The hinge which connects to the crock won't let it.
when the insides cool the pressure inside will lower causing suction on the lid, because the slow cooker varies its temperature it may be hotter at certain points than others.
For frozen meat I would temp but I never thought to try it bc mine doesn’t advertise it as a function.
Concerns about temperature settings in newer models
The warm setting on modern slow cookers should hold food above 145, which is in the safe zone for cooked foods.
Once the food is cooked and hot, you can switch the warm setting and leave it there safely.
Negative perceptions of slow cookers
Because most people are shit cooks
For people of a certain age, the slow cooker tended to mean something like a stew was being made which was shite when you were a kid.
Whenever my mum made something with the slow cooker, it always tasted the same - whether it was meant to be pulled pork or chili or whatever.
Slow cookers take time to heat up
If it's a crockpot brand crockpot they never get hot enough to boil. They'll simmer at most.
Discussion about food preservation and decay
Would the food not have dried out by then? How does food last for seven years like that?
If I had to guess, the seal on the freezer door was good enough to keep things from drying out. But obviously without power it'll still warm up and then the food would decay.
Yep, and the bacteria that thrive in environments low in oxygen (anaerobic) are some of the most putridly stinky buggers on the planet.
I'd say indefinitely if the seal was good enough. Like a jar of preserves, it won't just dry out due to the passage of time, the water would have to go somewhere, and it can't if it's sealed well.
