What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great for potlucks and parties
What should I cook with it? I was thinking I could do chicken, pork, and maybe some kind of queso dip for a taco night?
It's perfect for a taco bar.
Perfect for a nacho bar.
I'll make 3 kinds of chili's, pulled meats or dips.
Versatile cooking options
I was just going to say my cousin had one and set up a taco bar with it.
Effective for quick meals
it cooked Hella fast for being on low... is it a defect?
Great for hosting family dinners
Put the green beans in a crockpot and they're done! They stay warm all day and you can just plug them in on the sideboard.
Ideal for making pulled pork
Glad we kept the crock pot, it make much better pulled pork than the instant pot
Ideal for unattended cooking
I’d love to start a roast or something before we leave for work so it’s ready when we get home.
I thought that was the purpose of the crock pot. Add ingredients in the morning, busy day, dinner ready when you get home.
I run our crockpot while we are at work as well as sleeping.
That is literally what they are made for.
Convenient for meal preparation
One day I decided that my evening meals outweighed the risk of fire from a new slow cooker and I’ve been living life ever since
Maybe make the crockpot meal on the weekend and put away to re-heat on a work day? I’ve left mine on when I’m gone to work but I understand your boyfriends concern too
Functional keep warm feature
Nothing else needed, and I rarely use the keep warm function.
Ideal for simple cooking needs
they heat, thats it
Easy to use for meal preparation
Are Slow Cookers/Crock Pots common in your country? One of my German friends came to the states for Thanksgiving and we'd made him Buffalo Chicken Dip in our crock pot.
I'd say it's pretty commonly used here. It's so easy to just throw some ingredients into a pot and forgot about it for a few hours.
Really? It's like the easiest way to cook dinner. Take 20 minutes to prep in the morning before work, dump it all in and plug it in and in 8 hours when you come home you have a meal ready.
Crockpots are nice because they’re readily accessible without the excess heat of an oven. I’m cooking a pork roast for tacos now, and I can check the meat readily and shred it without hot mitts.
Great for making pulled pork
Pulled pork is super easy to make delicious.
Easy to prepare meals
Start with the Mississippi pot roast. Easy, affordable and delicious.
Great for parties and dips
Someone else posted several links that look great, but I'd like to add those smaller ones are great for parties, for dip.
Convenient for small meals
i have a smallish crockpot, i love it.
Easy to adjust recipes for size
Soup is really easy to adjust for size.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Modern slow cookers run too hot
all of them run too hot nowadays.
there was no “low” setting. They both cooked everything so fast on low.
My crock pot literally boils on low.
What is the best slow cooker or brand? (New ones are worse?)
Flimsy heating unit
The heating unit is so flimsy I'm afraid I'm going to break, bend or crack it.
Crock-Pots have short lifespan
What brand do you suggest? Should I just stick with a Crock-pot?
I thought the issue was that IP heats from the bottom, while crockpots heat from the sides as well.
Difficult to clean after use
it's a bitch to clean the day of. If you leave it til the next day. It will require an executive cleaning.
Cooks hotter than expected on low setting
Most slow cookers cook hotter and faster then they use to.
It’s not your imagination, all slow cookers made within the last ten years or so cook about twenty degrees hotter on each setting.
I do feel that the low setting is a bit too hot, but other than that it's fine.
We bought a Crock-Pot when our old Hamilton Beach died and hated it.
Inconsistent cooking results
Cooking it for half the time gives no true reflection.
Lack of timer option
I just wish a timer was an option. So it’ll click over to warm after said hours.
Considered unnecessary compared to traditional methods
I think they're pointless, just use a Dutch oven

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for manual over digital slow cookers
The manual crockpots with a low/high knob last longer than the digital ones.
slow cooked a pork shoulder in it and it turned out amazing
Comparing slow cooking effectiveness between brands
I found that the slow-cook function on my instant pot (it's a Secura brand) is way too hot for good slow cooking.
I actually think my instant pot is too cool lol but either way I hate the instant pot as a slow cooker!
Slow cookers are effective for cooking beans
Beans and a slow cooker, a match made in heaven...
I love doing my beans in a slow cooker. Heaven is right.
You're 100% right. Anybody that knows anything about beans knows that the best way to cook them is very slowly and gently for a long time so a slow cooker is perfect, possibly the only better way is cooking them very slowly in a clay pot which really is not that much different from a slow cooker, I've done both and I couldn't really tell the difference to be honest.
Crock Pot is a brand of slow cooker
Potential dumb question, is there a difference between a Crock Pot and a slow cooker?
Crockpot is a brand of slowcookers.
'Crock Pot' is just a brand name. They're all slow cookers.
The name 'Crock Pot' is owned by Sunbeam Products. The term 'slow-cooker' is totally generic and has no ownership.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Crock pots are used frequently for reheating at work
Have any of you brought a crock pot/slow cooker to the job for lunch/dinner? If so, do you have any recommendations?
I take this little thing multiple times per week: It's more reheat than actually cook (only 50 watts), but I do mostly soup, rice & beans, or leftover pasta dishes or Chinese food.
Put it in the passenger foot well, kick it on on break, hot food for lunch. Helps when I didn't make anything the night before too, grab a can of something and a can opener and throw it in the box.
I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/Crockpot-Electric-Portable-20-Ounce-Moonshine/dp/B09BDFXNQX/ref=asc_df_B09BDFXNQX?tag=bingshoppinga-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80745511361529&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=m&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584345034452137&psc=1
Discussion about food ideas for gatherings
Soups sound good as does a variety of chili.
I love it.
Dude ate like ten of them. Just devoured them making all kinds of food happiness noises.
Mention of different food setups
I definitely shouldn't have read the ingredients while I cooked chorizo for the first time but it looked so weird I had to see what was in it.
Try to find some actual Chorizo, the stuff has actual texture, and is a lot less offputting when cooked.
Alternatives to leaving a slow cooker on
something that might offer you some peace of mind is a smart outlet or power strip plug in that you can turn off after a certain time via phone app!
Discussion on slow cooker recipes
Can anyone recommend a crockpot recipe that comes out really good, full of flavor?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Generational differences in slow cooker cooking times
Hang on to that 70s slow cooker forever if you can.
My mom had one that said keep werm on it and I’ll be damned if that thing didn’t last forever I think she got rid of it because she chipped the crock.
Concerns about storage space for multiple appliances
we just don't have counter or storage space for another appliance
Discussion of preparation techniques for beans
I was downvoted to oblivion.
Beans are probably the greatest match with slow cookers, more so even than meat in my opinion.
Concerns about comparing slow cooker settings
How does that setting compare/contrast to a traditional slow cooker? Any conversion I need to adjust for?
It doesn't compare. Slow cook on IP doesn't get hot enough.
High is like low and low is like keep warm. The IP only heats from the bottom rather than also from the sides.
it does not slow cook. it will not simmer. it just gets tepid after 8 hours on hi.
Difficulty finding recipes for small cookers
The small nature of the pot has made it a little harder to find some appropriate recipes.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about changing slow cooker performance
Turns out, over the past, and either option has the according to this you are correct and it may be difficult to find a modern slow cooker that isn't too hot.
Use the high pressure setting for my pulled pork and it works great and only takes an hour...
Mention of other slow cookers' durability
That sucker can cook though.
In the name of saving space, a pressure cooker with a slow cooker option.
My cheap Hamilton beach has been going strong for 10 years of heavy use.
The sear/saute function is a game changer. No looking back, definitely worth it.
Discussion on variations in slow cooker performance over the years
I made queso for Christmas and it literally took an hr and a half to melt the velveeta.
The actual Crock-Pot brand cooks at the same temperature whether on high or low, it just takes a longer time to reach full temp on low.
Discussion around safety concerns
there's no one single answer, it depends on your circumstances and your level of risk-aversion.
that’s… more fires caused by slow cookers than I would have guessed
The Wyze ones are pretty cheap and can alert you to noises or movement.
He said he never attended a fire that was caused by a slow cooker and that he leaves his cooking all day without a concern.
Preference for older models over new ones
Older Slow Cooker vs Newer Slow Cooker? Looking to get in to the slow-cooking game and was looking at buying a new slow cooker today when my parents told me they had an old Cordon Bleu one from the 90s still working that hasn't been used in years.
If the graphics on the outside are any clue, I'm using one from the 1970's.
Crock pots are not commonly used in some cultures
Not that common. Older people do often still have a cast iron pan here they use to make slow cooked dishes, that basically sits on a low fire for about half a day.
Crock-Pot is just a brand name for slow cooker
Crock-Pot is just the brand name of a slow cooker. What's your concern?
