If you only need a slow cooker, get Crockpot or Hamilton Beach, wherever it's on sale, and you'll be golden.
I am in love with my Hamilton Beach 6 qt oval "set it and forget it" programmable slow cooker.
I bought one of those and it was a flop.
Timer feature is beneficial
YES! Get the one with the timer! So worth it!
Crock-Pot's latches are easy to use
Crock Pot. I have 11, while I love my Hamilton Beach slow cookers, Crock Pot is great and their latches are extremely nice (well placed, easy to use).
Crock-Pot is reliable
Older Slow Cooker vs Newer Slow Cooker? Looking to get in to the slow-cooking game and was looking at buying a new slow cooker today when my parents told me they had an old Cordon Bleu one from the 90s still working that hasn't been used in years.
Take the old one. It'll work just fine. The one I have is from crock pot, and it has high/low, and keep warm.
Convenient for meal prep
there are so many recipes out there.
Seriously…so many recipes. So convenient.
They're good for making pulled pork, soups, stews.
Effective for cooking various recipes
even the kids love it
Using pork shoulder to make carnitas works really well in a slow cooker.
Plus it works as a serving vessel for hot dishes with the warm setting.
Good for making large meals
They are great for making large batches of caramelised onions to freeze.
Effective for dinner parties
This setup looks majestic for dinner parties (although it might be a bit overkill), and it would be perfect for my board game nights!
Crock-Pot cooks food evenly
The actual Crock-Pot brand cooks at the same temperature whether on high or low, it just takes a longer time to reach full temp on low.
Programmable features enhance convenience
I’d like to get a programmable crock pot that I can start when I leave for work and I can set it to turn off at a certain point.
Excellent for hosting family dinners
Crockpots are an amazing help! Put the green beans in a crockpot and they're done! They stay warm all day and you can just plug them in on the sideboard.
Designed for long cooking durations
One day I decided that my evening meals outweighed the risk of fire from a new slow cooker and I’ve been living life ever since
Convenient for meal preparation
Are Slow Cookers/Crock Pots common in your country? One of my German friends came to the states for Thanksgiving and we'd made him Buffalo Chicken Dip in our crock pot.
Really? It's like the easiest way to cook dinner. Take 20 minutes to prep in the morning before work, dump it all in and plug it in and in 8 hours when you come home you have a meal ready.
Ideal for cooking large meals
That sounds like torture. I couldn't imagine turning my oven on and heating up the house when i can just plug in a crock pot.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Modern slow cookers run too hot
My crock pot literally boils on low.
Crock Pots have a reputation for cooking higher and faster than other brands.
Browning is lower heat longer time.
Difficult to clean
it's a bitch to clean the day of. If you leave it til the next day. It will require an executive cleaning.
Instant Pot is not effective for slow cooking
I actually think my instant pot is too cool lol but either way I hate the instant pot as a slow cooker!
Concerns about safety when left unattended
there's no one single answer, it depends on your circumstances and your level of risk-aversion.
Buy a new slow cooker, register the thing with the manufacturer in case something does go wrong (so they can let you know), and enjoy.
Crock-Pot gets too hot during cooking
It gets a little too hot for my liking so I returned it.
Timer feature would enhance usability
I just wish a timer was an option. So it’ll click over to warm after said hours.
Preference for non-smart, simpler designs
slow cookers are devices that do not need to be "smart"
Perceived as less useful compared to traditional methods
I think they're pointless, just use a Dutch oven

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about the need for larger capacity
Does anyone know if this unit can sear? Or can recommend a good quality slow cooker that will?
That product listing specifies it has a sear function and the reviews confirm it works, that should be a good option for you.
Clarifications on slow cooker materials
There is nothing cast iron in any slow cooker I know.
Slow cooker pots aren't cast iron. What are you looking at?
Discussion about slow cooker performance compared to Instant Pot
FYI, the Instant Pot is NOT a slow cooker Just use a slow cooker. You'll be much happier.
America's Test Kitchen tested different brands of electric pressure cookers and determined that Instant Pots perform poorly as slow cookers.
I thought the issue was that IP heats from the bottom, while crockpots heat from the sides as well.
Comparison of older and newer slow cookers
I have a crockpot from the late 70s and it takes that thing forevvvvver to get hot.
Hang on to that 70s slow cooker forever if you can.
Discussion about programmable slow cookers
Most sockets are programmable Then you can buy any crock pot you like.
Like this one, Wi-Fi Connect cooker😅:
Comments on the functionality of multi-cookers
you can saute in it, so do all your browning etc in there first, and then switch over to slowcooking, keeping all those flavours in one place.
It’s a great multi function unit and as such is a good space saver.
Discussion on the effectiveness of older slow cookers
I think I ended up giving away the new one. If not, it is so buried that I don't know where it is, while the groovy 1970's one is making spaghetti sauce as I type this.
Crock Pot is a brand of slow cooker
Potential dumb question, is there a difference between a Crock Pot and a slow cooker?
Crockpot is a brand of slowcookers.
"Crock Pot" is just a brand name. They're all slow cookers.
The name "Crock Pot" is owned by Sunbeam Products. The term "slow-cooker" is totally generic and has no ownership.

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Comments on using Instant Pot effectively for slow cooking
Use the high pressure setting for my pulled pork and it works great and only takes an hour.
Since my slow cooker broke, I’ve used my IP for slow cooking pretty frequently and it’s been great. Just did a big pot roast w/ potatoes and carrots on Monday and everything was cooked perfectly.
Experiences of successfully using slow cooking in Instant Pot
slow cooked a pork shoulder in it and it turned out amazing
Various cooking tips shared
I definitely shouldn't have read the ingredients while I cooked chorizo for the first time but it looked so weird I had to see what was in it.
Try to find some actual Chorizo, the stuff has actual texture, and is a lot less offputting when cooked.
Beans are best cooked slowly in a slow cooker
I love doing my beans in a slow cooker. Heaven is right.
I was downvoted to oblivion.
You're 100% right. Anybody that knows anything about beans knows that the best way to cook them is very slowly and gently for a long time so a slow cooker is perfect, possibly the only better way is cooking them very slowly in a clay pot which really is not that much different from a slow cooker, I've done both and I couldn't really tell the difference to be honest.
Beans are probably the greatest match with slow cookers, more so even than meat in my opinion.

Comparison with other slow cookers and brands
I got a green pan slow-cooker as a gift , they are more expensive but it’s pretty great, it saves me money and I like the fact that it’s from green pan.
$30 Walmart Crock-Pot with the manual knob in high, low, and warm has been all I've ever needed.
The one that you can afford that does what you need.
Hamilton Beach has been the best brand for me.
Discussion about various slow cooker brands and models
In the name of saving space, a pressure cooker with a slow cooker option.
I thought the same thing about my 20 year old Crock-Pot. That sucker can cook though.
The sear/saute function is a game changer. No looking back, definitely worth it.
Mine is the Kitchenaid 6 quart and it rocks!never a problem. Only delicious cooking smells.
Discussion about other brands
Hamilton Beach is good in the slow cooker space and usually cheap.
Got a 7 qt. Hamilton Beach about 6 years ago for $40 USD, still going strong today.
Just go to Walmart or Target, and pick up an old school Crockpot. They’re cheap and they do a great job.
I have both Crock-Pot and Hamilton Beach and both are great!
Discussion on price differences of slow cookers
I cannot imagine spending that much.
The bowl in my slow cooker is ceramic.
I’ll take my chances with my crock pot.
General shopping advice for slow cookers
I'm a little worried I won't use it as much as I'm hoping, so I don't want to spend much.
This takes you to a top 100 list of products in the slow cookers category, based on number of sales/popularity.
Good advice lol, also for newer buyers, check this thread
You will probably be happy with it.
Discussion about recipe ideas for gatherings
What should I cook with it? I was thinking I could do chicken, pork, and maybe some kind of queso dip for a taco night?
Soups sound good as does a variety of chili.
This is the way. When we do potlucks at my office I'll make 3 kinds of chili's, pulled meats or dips.
Dude ate like ten of them. Just devoured them making all kinds of food happiness noises.
Suggestions for adjusting cooking times
start it on high for a bit then turn down to low?
Cooking it for half the time gives no true reflection.
Discussion about storage space for appliances
we just don't have counter or storage space for another appliance
Discussion on the practicality of slow cookers in hot climates
It's over 30 C for half the year. I couldn't imagine paying for AC and living in a space with an oven running for hours, when i can just plug a crock pot into the wall.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about changes in slow cooker temperatures
Turns out, over the past, and either option has the according to this you are correct and it may be difficult to find a modern slow cooker that isn't too hot.
Discussion about food safety and slow cooking
It looks like you're asking about Food Safety.
Discussion about the reliability of slow cookers
I want something that’s reliable and that will last with regular use.
this one seems to top out at about 200° which is perfect.
I've had this one for years now and I've been very happy with it.
6 years on my Hamilton Beach so far and it's been great.
Discussion on slow cooker safety and usage
I do it all the time…but it’s on top of a stone counter and no fire hazards.
I always place mine on a half sheet pan, one of the thick restaurant style ones with a rim.
You can certainly leave it unattended. Thats the whole point of.e point of a slow cooker.
Discussion on modern slow cooker temperatures
Most slow cookers cook hotter and faster then they use to.
It’s not your imagination, all slow cookers made within the last ten years or so cook about twenty degrees hotter on each setting.
Discussion about slow cooker safety and usage
Tell your boyfriend Reddit said it's ok!
He said he never attended a fire that was caused by a slow cooker and that he leaves his cooking all day without a concern.
Concerns about potential kitchen fires
Show him this article.
I dont think ita possible for a crock pot full of food to get hot enough in a few hours to self combust.
Comparison of cooking methods across cultures
Not that common. Older people do often still have a cast iron pan here they use to make slow cooked dishes, that basically sits on a low fire for about half a day.
