What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great customer service
Great headlamp, great customer service.
Call black diamond. There really nice. And sent me a replacement.
Powerful LED light output
On the back of my head is a steady, flashing, or strobe RED light. If I run fast enough I look like an F1 driver.
Compact design fits under hat brim
Are Black Diamond headlamps junk? Bought a BD Spot, and used it with the included AAAs without issues in a number of Western states, elevations, and weather conditions.
Should probably mention as well that it's often raining here (Vancouver). So being able to wear it with a hat to keep rain out of my eyes would be a big plus...
Good feature set for night hikes
their feature set was pretty nice.
Durability over a long period
I've had mine for more than a decade and it won't die.
Adjustable white and red beam feature
I cant find this on any other lamp im looking at.
The tap system takes a minute to get used to but after that it's superior.
I cant find this on any other lamp im looking at.
The red light and cool white LEDs have long battery life, and the setup is very lightweight.
Quality and reliability over time
Spot and Storm are both extremely well-reviewed and highly regarded.
I thru-hiked the AT with a storm and liked all the options I had.
Quality climbing gear
Black diamond makes quality climbing gear.
Well-designed user interface with ramping brightness
User interface is really well done with them. Ramping brightness on all the beams.
Lightweight and compact design
I still reach for it when I’m doing DIY repairs at home, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them for a non-flashaholic.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Durability issues compared to other brands
Been through a few Black Diamonds, found them a lot less durable than most of the brands you'll see recommended here.
Uses AAA batteries instead of rechargeable
Most of them use 3xAAA, which is a really lazy way of powering a light.
Not worth it for something that doesn’t take Li-ions.
Disliked capacitive touch button in older models
I HATED. Can't see that listed on either of these.
Durability issues with sensitive circuit boards
Headlamps are sadly worse in durability due to extremely sensitive circuit boards, similar to a smartphone.
Perceived lower quality compared to competitors
Looking to buy a waterproof, high lumen headlamp. Petzl or Black Diamond? Edit: Is there anything available to the following specs in headlamps:
No. Petzl and Black Diamond are generally both among the lower-quality headlamps available, despite their premium price.
Definitely not Petzl or Black Diamond. What's your budget?
Claims about battery life are misleading
Is the Zebralight really only better for high lumens and durability?
This light either doesn't manage 250 lumens, or rapidly drops to a lower level.
Durability issues with sweat
Lightweight headlamp that can withstand sweat for 2hrs

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for lower brightness modes
It also always starts on low which is nice, though the low is rather bright in my opinion, I would rather they cut the medium in half and give us a lower low - or even better, a ~1lumen firefly mode.
Inquiries about center strap utility in headlamps
See /r/knifeclub... but most of them can also be removed non-destructively.
Concerns about runtime specs from other brands
Petzl has the problem of being the biggest liar about their runtime specs.
Preference for rechargeable battery systems
The Petzl rechargeable battery pays for itself in the long run and mine lasted for 3 years before i had to replace the battery
Preference for brands with rechargeable batteries
I don't think I'm ever going back.
Discussion on headlamp performance for camping
I exclusively use a H600w (non flood) and it's the best headlamp for me for camping.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on headlamp battery types and usage
maybe you should also take a look at ... Wurkkos HD10 ... it also has higher output and is cheaper.
Headlamps that use 14500 (i.e. AA-ish sized) and 16340 (i.e. CR123A-ish sized) Li-ion batteries generally don't need a top strap to be stable.
A headlamp 18650 or larger if I’m doing more than standing still or moving slowly it is needed.
Discussion on alternative lighting options
I know you said headlamp, but here’s a chest lamp that I use and it lasts hours and is very bright.
Best product I’ve ever bought! The light is super bright and the vest is actually very very comfortable.
This is the way! I didn’t realize chest lamps existed and now I’m addicted and have two.
I’ve used the Nitecore UL25 for thruhiking & running - lasts ~7h, USB-C rechargeable, 45g, comfy to wear, and so far, super reliable.

Discussion on various headlamp brands
Can't wait for the darkness now :)))
I have a Petzl Tikkina and I like it.
Mine goes around my waist, which I really like because it allows me to move my head around without losing the light on the ground in front of me.
Repair tips for headlamps
I tried that and it worked a charm.
Preference for specific brands over Black Diamond
Better in all ways except brand loyalty to Black Diamond, which is of little concern to most people.
Thanks so much for this! My choice would be Zebra if it were at all easy to get in Australia, but it’s seemingly not possible.
Fenix headlamps have always been tanks for me, so much so that i've given a handful away to family members.
I ended up buying a Fenix, used it once and then it got stolen lol.
Discussion on headlamp brand comparisons
Never owned a headlight and need one for early morning runs/trails so I’m between buying a blackdiamond headlight or a Petzl headlight.
I upgraded to a Petzl Swift RL from a cheap headlamp. It's done three hundreds with me and it's been awesome.
In all the black diamond and petzl torches I’ve owned I have noticed zero difference in lumens in all the mid range models, all great.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on ultralight headlamps
I found all of these to be plenty powerful for all use-cases that I had for them - I rarely need more than a hundred or so lumens out of a headlamp, 400+ is more than I need personally so I was satisfied.
Check out the Sunblesa; it should replace the nu25 as the new UL headlamp (although I still prefer my discontinued nu20).
Discussion on alternative headlamp brands
I prefer the Ledneser MH10, which also uses the 18650 but it's in the back, so the light is better balanced.
Once you get with the 18650 batteries, there is no going back IMO.
Definitely do not buy an alkaline battery operated headlamp whatever you do.
Discussion on alternatives and competitors
Any decent li-ion headlamp will be way better in every way.
Discussion about brand loyalty and market trends
Are black diamond headlamps any good? I night fish with a guy who says his black diamond head lamp is the best for the money.
Technology and manufacturing have changed, but black diamond, petzl, etc have not.
