Snoop's Take

The PETZL Bindi Headlamp is an ultra-compact, rechargeable headlamp designed for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. With a brightness of 200 lumens and multiple lighting modes, it caters to various activities such as running and hiking, ensuring you have reliable visibility in any situation. Consumer feedback highlights the headlamp's comfort and performance, with users noting it is "very comfortable when running" and that the "light itself is great, plenty bright, lightweight, comfortable, easy to use." Additionally, many appreciate its long battery life and durability, stating that it offers a "long tail of runtime" and is reliable in dark, wet conditions. However, there are some concerns regarding perceived lower quality compared to competitors, with some users expressing doubts about its brightness and battery compatibility. Overall, the PETZL Bindi Headlamp is highly recommended for those seeking a reliable and well-designed lighting solution for outdoor activities. Despite some criticisms, its strengths in comfort, illumination, and durability make it a solid choice in its category.

what I like about Swift RL is that it is very comfortable when running and the strap is super easy to adjust.

Positive Feedback

No. Petzl and Black Diamond are generally both among the lower-quality headlamps available, despite their premium price.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Comfortable for running
what I like about Swift RL is that it is very comfortable when running and the strap is super easy to adjust.
Comfortable for extended wear
I have not had it get hot against my head.
Rechargeable via micro USB
rei says micro usb.
Bright light output
The light itself is great, plenty bright, lightweight, comfortable, easy to use.
Great for running or hiking
Petzl core is still limited to micro-usb, and in attempt to keep some semblance of order in my chargers i try to stick with USB-C for anything new.
It's a nice light for running or hiking. I've used it on a few shorter trail races and I just charge the battery pack and take some AAAs for backup.
Great for dark and wet conditions
Thanks! I’m really happy with it so far. I’m out where it’s very dark at night, and very wet, and it’s been great so far.
Well-designed with long runtime
They are very cleverly designed, offer a loooong tail of runtime so you're never left surprised in the dark, and the Reactive Lighting is the most smart feature a headlamp could ever have.
Highly reliable brand
Black Diamond and Petzl seem to be the most highly recommended brands but which model is your favorite that also has red light mode
I always reccomend petzl over bd purely due to reliability. I have seen three bd headlamps fail due to moisture damage first hand but never a petzl.
Durable design for outdoor use
Love them both. The one at work I have gotten 50 hours easy on a set of batteries.
I was just looking at this lightweight option which looks nice.
Long battery life
It’s using both medium and low power modes. At the end of the 50 hours it’s still shinning.
Better illumination than competitors
Petzl had better illumination.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Perceived lower quality compared to other brands
No. Petzl and Black Diamond are generally both among the lower-quality headlamps available, despite their premium price.
Definitely not Petzl or Black Diamond.
Inability to find product model
Light in the cold batteries loose some of their capacity.
Incompatibility with certain battery packs
Did not work for me in my Petzl Actic Core from 2019, which came with a Core battery.
Insufficient brightness for some users
While somewhat “brighter” it seems like they have a much smaller radius and are essentially a spotlight.
Fiddly control on competitor's models
the current BD headlamps have an annoying and fiddly control.
Minimum lumens requirement for night vision
More than anything else, you should look at the minimum lumens.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Desire for additional low brightness mode
It also always starts on low which is nice, though the low is rather bright in my opinion, I would rather they cut the medium in half and give us a lower low - or even better, a ~1lumen firefly mode.
Discussion about USB-C charging feature
headlamp that charges USB-C to USB-C (finally!) - Petzl Swift RL
This is super niche, but awesome to hear! I tested both headlamps you mentioned and sent them back for specific this reason.
Absolutely one of the best purchases I've ever made for my gear.
The Klein head lamp has had USB c to c for a long time, and has a lot of incredible features! It's fantastic
Discussion on Petzl headlamp features
Headlamp that starts in Red light? Just curious if any of the Petzl headlamps can start in the Red light
Amazing headlamp.
I don't know of any Petzel that do off hand.
Do the new Petzls not have the sliding switch any more?
Debate over headlamp features and usability
This is the best info i have seen in one place for both headlamps.
I chose the NU20 over the NU25 for the following reasons:

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on alternative headlamp options
There are quite a few smaller headlamps that can do 6 hours in a lower mode, and there's always the option of bringing spare batteries.
What lumen level are you running at? AAA/10440 is severely limited in that regard.
Discussion about hybrid battery compatibility
Will this also work with the black diamond range of hybrid headlamps? Eg. The Storm 450.
This battery doesn't work in a Black Diamond Spot 400. Doesn't fit properly and I think the voltage is too low for the light to turn on.
Discussion about differences in headlamp pricing
If you want good light, it costs good money. Decide how important that is to you and pay accordingly.
Preference for other brands like Black Diamond
I've been quite pleased with the Black Diamond lamps. They have a number of models, the tap feature actually works quite well (esp. the newer updates), good battery, even easy to operate with gloves.
Discussion about headlamp preferences and comparisons
The Actik lamp is a hybrid version allowing use of AAA batteries or Petzl proprietary battery, which is ok.
Most of that time will be spent *well* under 100 lumens.
Recommendations for alternative headlamps
RTFM I guess?
Look at the fenix brands they make good head lamps.
They have many different models. I have the SP40, which is 1200 lumens and uses a replaceable, rechargeable battery.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about ultralight headlamp preferences
I found all of these to be plenty powerful for all use-cases that I had for them - I rarely need more than a hundred or so lumens out of a headlamp, 400+ is more than I need personally so I was satisfied.
Check out the Sunblesa; it should replace the nu25 as the new UL headlamp (although I still prefer my discontinued nu20).
Discussion on headlamp preferences
The Petzl has the Reactive Lighting, which looks really neat and helpful, from comfort point of view but also to extend battery life.
Discussion about headlamp preferences
so I really prefer headlamps over a flashlight. However, in the past I have not had the best of luck with them.
Do you legitimately think it’s worth the upgrade? I’ve been having really good luck with those super cheap 2/$20 rechargeable headlamps.
Depends how long you need the headlamp to run for, if i know the days are short, I would much rather bring my Sofirn H25LR 18650 headlamp.
I'm looking to spend a bit of money on a good-quality headlamp for camping and general-purpose use.
Debate over brightness settings
I want white, low and high and maybe red low and high.
Took some getting used to… but I use it all the time and love the feature.
Debate over brightness settings and performance
They are not the brightest lights in the world nor the one with the longest battery life but the quality is usually really good.
They are more expensive than the competition but lighter and better support.
