What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good customer service from Black Diamond
Call black diamond. There really nice. And sent me a replacement.
Durable performance in various conditions
Are Black Diamond headlamps junk? Bought a BD Spot, and used it with the included AAAs without issues in a number of Western states, elevations, and weather conditions.
I've had mine for more than a decade and it won't die.
Nice feature set
they arent awful, the batteries they use kind of suck though.
Adjustable white and red beams
The red light and cool white LEDs have long battery life, and the setup is very lightweight.
Superior tap system once accustomed
The tap system takes a minute to get used to but after that it's superior.
Quality and reliability over time
Black Diamond Headlamp options I've had my [Black Diamond Cosmo](https://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/en_US/product/cosmo-350/) (mine is an older AAA only model, but similar) for about 6 years and have been very happy with the quality, size, reliability and the 3 light modes (Spot, flood, red)
Spot and Storm are both extremely well-reviewed and highly regarded. Spot is lighter.
I thru-hiked the AT with a storm and liked all the options I had.
Quality climbing gear and headlamps
Black diamond makes quality climbing gear.
Highly recommended from me :)
Lightweight and compact design
Once you fall inside of this hole, you get to know other options that are surely better, but sometimes are more expensive, complicated, or require special batteries/chargers.
They are optimized to solve: light weight, low cost, low profile, and no surprise dead batteries.
Replaceable battery option available
They sell a rechargable pack that goes where the AAA batteries go in the headlamps that run on said batteries, so you can have the best of both worlds.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Planned obsolescence issues after warranty expiration
Has anyone successfully repaired a headlamp or do I succumb to its planned obsolescence?
That they get flattened down over time and no longer make solid contact with the ends of the batteries.
Durability issues compared to other brands
Been through a few Black Diamonds, found them a lot less durable than most of the brands you'll see recommended here.
Quality issues with newer models
I have several BD headlamps. The last two are Spot 350s. I was not impressed with the quality compared to the older ones.
Durability issues due to sensitive circuit boards
Headlamps are sadly worse in durability due to extremely sensitive circuit boards, similar to a smartphone.
Use of AAA batteries seen as inferior
Most of them use 3xAAA, which is a really lazy way of powering a light.
Not worth it for something that doesn’t take Li-ions.
Preference for alternative brands with better features
I like them a lot, but then I got a Sofirn SP40. It's bigger and heavier, but that thing goes for ever and is USB rechargeable.
Perceived low quality compared to other brands
Looking to buy a waterproof, high lumen headlamp.
No. Petzl and Black Diamond are generally both among the lower-quality headlamps available, despite their premium price.
Most of the headlamps are in the 'right-angle' section, as that's a versatile design that can work as a headlamp or a handheld.
Battery performance issues with high output
Is the Zebralight really only better for high lumens and durability?
The Zebralight on the other hand will maintain its 255 lumens for 3.9 hours exactly as it says it will, at full brightness for the whole time before dropping down to a low mode for several more hours.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Mention of rechargeable batteries vs. alkaline
Any decent li-ion headlamp will be way better in every way.
Discussion about headlamp alternatives
Definitely do not buy an alkaline battery operated headlamp whatever you do.
Mention of brand comparisons and user preferences
Pro cavers depend their lives on their headlamps not failing.
Comparison of Black Diamond to other brands
Battery life realistically only needs to be around 4 - 5 hours at high brightness
The Icon 700 was blown away by Zebra years ago. Better in all ways except brand loyalty to Black Diamond, which is of little concern to most people.
Fenix headlamps have always been tanks for me, so much so that i've given a handful away to family members.
I ended up buying a Fenix, used it once and then it got stolen lol
Discussion about preferences for different Black Diamond models
Can't see that listed on either of these.
Discussion about the differences between Black Diamond and Petzl headlamps
a lot of runners had Petzl so I’m just wondering if there is really a difference in performance
I upgraded to a Petzl Swift RL from a cheap headlamp. It's done three hundreds with me and it's been awesome.
In all the black diamond and petzl torches I’ve owned I have noticed zero difference in lumens in all the mid range models, all great.
Personal experiences with various brands of headlamps
The Petzl rechargeable battery pays for itself in the long run and mine lasted for 3 years before i had to replace the battery
Nitecore NU20. I just bought my second for $20 on eBay, featherweight, plenty bright, decent battery, waterproof. I have a Biolight and a Petzl and I like both, but this has been the consistent favorite.
Discussion on alternatives to Black Diamond and Petzl
I have had a NiteCore HC65 on my climbing hardhat for the past year. I would not trade it out for anything else.
Comparing battery consumption between models
I exclusively use a H600w (non flood) and it's the best headlamp for me for camping.
Discussion about headlamp battery types and preferences
I don’t expect to use it a ton outside of the odd hike or run after I'm back home, so I suppose a AAA powered option might be best for a long-term investment where I don't have to worry about batteries going bad.
The best headlamps for most purposes are aluminum tube / right angle style not the poorly waterproofed plastic blobs sold at REI.
Since I don't have much experience using headlamps - would you expect I need to charge these within the 4 days?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about the necessity of a center strap for stability in headlamps
I just need something in the $30 to $60 range for walks and tasks.
Most of them can also be removed non-destructively.
if you want a 14500 headlamp and like the HD12.
Headlamps that use 14500 and 16340 Li-ion batteries generally don't need a top strap to be stable.
Discussion on brand loyalty and market positioning
Technology and manufacturing have changed, but black diamond, petzl, etc have not.
