I got an Etrex 30 around when they were released and it has been 100% for me ever since.

Positive Feedback

Smart phones do this adequately and arguably better because they can have different apps that look at the data differently.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Garmin devices are reliable in adverse conditions
I got an Etrex 30 around when they were released and it has been 100% for me ever since.
No regrets.
Garmin handheld GPS are reliable for outdoor use
They're relatively inexpensive, easy to use, lightweight and accurate.
Garmin GPS units offer lifetime updates
Old Car GPS units are stupidly overlooked.
I have 3 and all of them have free lifetime upgrades.
Fenix saves battery on phone and works well in rain
I tried fenix 6 with prepared map. It was great, I saved a lot of battery on my phone and it is better in rain.
Garmin devices offer reliable backup features
They will connect to each other. So if for some reason I can’t reach the SOS button on the gps, I can still trigger it from my watch.
Garmin GPSMAP 67i is awesome and worth it.
it’s pretty awesome and well worth it.
Dedicated GPS units are reliable in adverse conditions
The handheld GPSs are quite sturdy and waterproof. The majority of phones are not.
Garmin devices can preload maps for offline use
Plenty of map apps can download offline maps to use when you're in areas with bad/no reception
Lifetime map updates are beneficial
Now that Google maps can download maps and work without any mobile data, it pretty much killed the main reason to hold onto an old GPS.
The old GPS has the issues: Map stitching issues, recalculating delays, and accuracy about 100 to 200 feet.
Older GPS devices can be more accurate
Often older GPS devices are more accurate as they were single goal devices and didn’t have to share space and battery power with all other uses.
Garmin units have improved reliability
They used to be horribly unreliable, but I think it's unjustified nowadays.
This ranged from poor battery life, frustrating touch screens and poor ant+ reception.
Standalone GPS units have maps already installed
Standalone GPS units have the maps already installed and those cost a lot of money for companies to create and keep updated.
Dedicated GPS units are recommended for road trips
I am thankful to have a navigation system other than my phone because it saved me from getting lost a couple of times in areas where I didn't get any data signal like the desert and mountains for Google Maps.
Accurate running dynamics data
I saw the difference for myself.
Heart rate updates automatically on machines
it's nice to see the heart rate automatically update on the machine specifically so I don't have to look at my watch.
Accurate heart rate readings
I bought it for accurate HR readings and treadmill pacing
Interesting running dynamics data
The RD data is interesting.
Ground contact balance metric is valuable
Only thing I find any interest in is the ground contact balance.
I am considering buying the HRM-Pro for left/right balance alone.
Provides interesting running data including balance metrics
I have one, it works well and has interesting data, including left/right balance.
Yes. Loads of interesting data. Could be worth a try.
Running dynamics are interesting but not always useful
I always fall for the trap and and every few years buy the latest/greatest Garmin.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Smartphones may be more versatile for recreational use
Smart phones do this adequately and arguably better because they can have different apps that look at the data differently.
Older Garmin units may be slow and barely usable
I have a nuvi 50, and honestly it's slow AF.
Garmin Instinct is mostly useless without a phone
I have a Garmin instinct watch. It's pretty much useless without your phone.
Smaller screens on watches are finicky to use
A watch is a much smaller screen and more finnicky to use than a stand alone unit or an app on your phone.
Foretrex is considered not the best Garmin GPS device.
Okay so I heard the Foretrex is actually not the best Garmin GPS device.
Preference for phone-based apps over Garmin for some features.
I have a 66i though and wish I just bought an inreach mini and used the phone based apps to utilize all the features.
Smartphones provide similar functionality to GPS units
If you already have a smart phone, then they can provide a lot of the same functionality as a GPS.
Older GPS devices may require updates to remain useful
Sure, if you can update it’s map data
Then use google….. your GPS will be out of date and will need to be updated.
Past Garmin units had reliability issues
Your experience with it is not typical.
This. My Garmin shat on me during a 200 mile race and deleted it forever... I bought a wahoo bolt and never looked back.
While I had my Edge 1000, Garmin issued a software update that broke pairing of their OWN HRM straps, for over a solid month.
Standalone GPS units are expensive due to hardware costs
A Lot of the stand alone units price is for replicated features.
High price point may deter sales
Would you really say it is 200$ worth.
RD-Pod is considered outdated compared to HRM-Pro
I had one and it was okay, but I gave it away after I got my HRM-Pro because that does everything the RD-Pod did, and a lot more.
Modern Garmin watches collect the same data as the RD-Pod
Not really. The modern Garmin watches already collect the same data the pod does.
Chest band may not provide accurate distance
But the chest band doesn't give accurate running distance.
That still doesn't give accurate distance....
Garmin devices can be pricey.
They are a little pricey but I'd replace mine tomorrow if it broke.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on accuracy of GPS devices for field mapping
I really want one that will do well in wooded areas.
Bad Elf Flex Mini and Eos Arrow Lite would be the lowest price points for what you want in my opinion.
The US Forest Service tests GPS units under forest conditions.
Discussion on the comparison between GPS watches and standalone units
What are the pros and cons to having either a watch with gps like the Garmin Instinct or Fénix vs an individual gps tool like a Garmin Inreach or Montana?
Mention of phone capabilities for satellite messaging
Nothing a stand-alone unit can really do better than your phone, unless you want to be able to message with it, and soon phones should be able to use satellite messaging as well.
Discussion on the durability and specialized hardware of standalone GPS units
Some of the hardware is also kind of specialized, which adds cost, even if it seems low tech on the surface.
General chatter about running experiences
my watch instantly pinged me that I had gone over my 140bpm HR cap lol

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Mention of using paper maps and atlases as alternatives.
GPS probably isn’t going to work forever.
Mention of using eTrex 20 for simple navigation
Uses AA batteries so easy to carry along a couple extra or pick up at a gas station if needed
+1 on the eTrex 20. A pair of AA Lithium batteries usually last me a good 32 hours of recording.
Discussion about using foot pods for more accurate pace and distance on treadmills
Be warned that it may show you just how miscalibrated your treadmill actually is.
Mention of using the pod for swimming
Plus it works for swimming too
Discussion on using old phones as backup GPS.
Second old phone without cell service and download apps and maps on Wi-Fi.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comment on power consumption compared to smartphones.
Uses less power than a smartphone.
Discussion on Garmin's transition to lifetime updates
They started changing to lifetime updates for most products a while after the mobile version of Google Maps introduced turn-by-turn directions and ate their lunch.
Discussion on choosing Garmin for pure navigation without smartphone connectivity
I don’t know why everything must be so confusing and complicated.
I’ve been using a Garmin etrex 10 for more than 10 (15? I don’t even know anymore) years, for pure navigation only.
I like the edge 530, the phone connectivity actually is a big plus because you can create a route on your phone and directly send it to your gps via bluetooth, no signal required.
I've used this app for years and it's honestly become the most important app on my phone.
Discussion on the utility of dedicated GPS vs. smartphone apps
I give zero Fks about my biometric feedback data, workout planning, ounces of sweat per hour, etc.
Apps on your phone will get that job done.
My apps include Ride w GPS and Gaia GPS.
Curiosity about map options for eTrex devices
Curious, what maps do you have loaded on yours? Do you have city navigator on it too?
General chatter about upgrading from eTrex 20 to 20x
I don't really see a difference.
Discussion on the advantages of dedicated GPS devices over smartphones
Garmin doesn't need cell coverage
Discussion on brand loyalty based on past experiences
experience with a product is really significant in next purchases.
Comparison of Garmin with Wahoo devices
I’ve been using Garmin for few years and I’m ok with it.
Discussion on synchronization between devices
How does it work with the synchronisation between the watch and the pod? Which device takes precedence, e.g. if the watch picks up 5000 steps and the pod picks up 5800 steps, how does the app or device(s) go about reconciling the primary / correct data and which dataset gets dropped?
Discussion on the value of running dynamics data
the running dynamics that I am curious about.
Discussion on upgrading from older Garmin models
Do the added advanced running dynamics of Garmin Forerunner 935/645 really add anything to your training?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on keeping old Garmin GPS for privacy.
I'm actually thinking about buying one for privacy reasons.
Discussion on simplicity and reliability of GPS devices
Simpler is better for me though.
The GPS functionality on phones is fairly good and will work in most locations so long as you’ve preloaded the maps for locations that have no cell phone coverage.
What are you looking to get out of your GPS? Tracking your hikes? Seeing your location on a map? Do you want something that is also satellite messaging enabled?
Discussion on the usability of very old GPS devices
Are very old GPS still usable? I have a nuvi 750 from more than a decade ago.
Mention of Garmin's near monopoly in outdoor GPS.
Garmin GPSMaps line is the only real option and Garmin has a near monopoly on outdoors GPS units.
Discussion about Garmin running dynamics vs Stryd
Garmin Running Power vs Stryd I have a Garmin Forerunner 965 with Wrist based running power and dynamics.
Stryd gives really accurate instant pace, and with that, instant power.
Given that Garmins run power feature was only officially released with the FR 955 and newer devices as well as the HRM Pro/Plus, I wonder about the validity of this study in 2023/2024.
Stryd uses wind in its calculation. Wrist based doesnt
