No regrets.

Positive Feedback

Hand held GPS…probably not for recreational backpacking. Smart phones do this adequately and arguably better because they can have different apps that look at the data differently.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Garmin devices are preferred for mapping and emergency services
No regrets.
Garmin handheld GPS is reliable for outdoor navigation
They're relatively inexpensive, easy to use, lightweight and accurate.
Garmin devices have free lifetime updates
I have 3 and all of them have free lifetime upgrades.
Really? Mine has endless lifetime updates.
Effective for battery saving during navigation
I saved a lot of battery on my phone and it is better in rain.
Well worth it for military use
Can confirm it’s pretty awesome and well worth it.
Dedicated GPS units offer better precision and reliability
Why do hobby pilots and boat captains always use Garmins?
a dedicated GPS unit has a number of benefits over a GPS app on a phone
Plenty of map apps can download offline maps to use when you're in areas with bad/no reception
Handheld GPS devices are sturdy and waterproof
The handheld GPSs are quite sturdy and waterproof. The majority of phones are not.
Lifetime map updates are beneficial
Now that Google maps can download maps and work without any mobile data, it pretty much killed the main reason to hold onto an old GPS.
Older GPS devices can be more accurate
Often older GPS devices are more accurate as they were single goal devices and didn’t have to share space and battery power with all other uses.
Garmin units offer reliable navigation features
While looking at all the reviews I couldn't help but notice all the "hate" around Garmin units, but looking at the arguments, I couldn't help myself but to think that most people spreading "hate" around Garmin were complaining about their products being too complicated.
I've been using Garmin for few years and I'm ok with it.
They used to be horribly unreliable, but I think it's unjustified nowadays.
Durability of standalone GPS in varying temperatures
Some of the hardware is also kind of specialized, which adds cost, even if it seems low tech on the surface.
Recommended for road tripping and long-distance navigation
I was very thankful for that feature on my road trip.
Fenix design is appreciated
I really like fenix design.
Solar feature is valued by some users
the solar makes 0 difference, too.
the solar on the Fenix is a gimmick.
Reliable heart rate monitoring
I keep on checking heart rate, they where exactly the same each time I look.
Improved speed on maps and battery life
Charge once every 25 days.
Excellent choice for long battery life and GPS functionality
Worth buying a new Fenix 7x Solar now
The Fenix 7X Solar or 7X Pro Solar would still be an excellent watch.
Excellent battery life compared to Fitbit devices
The battery life alone even after significant tracking has been a huge plus coming from Fitbit for me.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Smartphones are seen as adequate alternatives for navigation
Hand held GPS…probably not for recreational backpacking. Smart phones do this adequately and arguably better because they can have different apps that look at the data differently.
Some Garmin models are slow and hard to use
I have a nuvi 50, and honestly it's slow AF.
Garmin units eventually reach End of Life
They started changing to lifetime updates for most products a while after the mobile version of Google Maps introduced turn-by-turn directions and ate their lunch.
Small screen can be difficult to use
A watch is a much smaller screen and more finnicky to use than a stand alone unit or an app on your phone.
User interface is not intuitive
The UI is terrible and randomly does stuff but it's cool that I can track how fast I was going snowboarding.
Desire for more integration with phone apps
I have a 66i though and wish I just bought an inreach mini and used the phone based apps to utilize all the features.
High cost of standalone GPS units
A Lot of the stand alone units price is for replicated features.
Garmin devices can fail during use
My 7 pro solar is till stuck in a boot loop and can’t be bothered.
User interface issues reported
Good write up OP - read your google doc summary.
Significant battery drain reported
I know they advertise 21 days, but I don't know why such a huge battery drain.
Issues with heart rate detection
the new software seems to have bricked HR detection, the sensor is fine but the algorithm interprets the data wrong and presents faulty data to the watch.
Screen visibility issues with washed-out colors
the screen makes the colours look washed out.
Battery life is a crucial factor for some users
Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar Black DLC Titanium
My apologies if this comes across insulting, that is NOT my intention.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comparison to Venu 2 regarding map functionality
As far as i know, the venu doesn’t offer the map function, so you should get the fenix or epix.
Discussion about accuracy requirements for GPS in professional settings
I really want one that will do well in wooded areas.
Bad Elf Flex Mini and Eos Arrow Lite would be the lowest price points for what you want in my opinion.
References to testing GPS units under forest conditions
The US Forest Service tests GPS units under forest conditions.
Discussion on the requirements for GPS in outdoor settings
What are you looking to get out of your GPS? Tracking your hikes? Seeing your location on a map? Do you want something that is also satellite messaging enabled?
Discussion about the best Garmin GPS device
the one in these pics is the "best" they have. Especially if you utilize the filters on their website, you'll quickly realize this little sucker is chalk full of features.
Discussion about preferences for pure navigation devices
I don’t know why everything must be so confusing and complicated.
I don’t even mount it in my handlebars or anything, I just check it from time to time to make sure I’m on the right path.
Trying to plot a course on the gps would be a massive pain.
I've used this app for years and it's honestly become the most important app on my phone.
Curiosity about map types for GPS devices
Curious, what maps do you have loaded on yours? Do you have city navigator on it too?
Discussion about user experiences influencing future purchases
experience with a product is really significant in next purchases.
Discussion about improvements in screen readability and glare issues
Fenix 8 solar sapphire screen readability. Looks like Garmin fixed the glare issue.
They didn't really "fix" anything, they just removed the layer that affects clarity.
Garmin constantly has errors on the specs on their site.
Interest in comparing display technology (MIP vs AMOLED)
Seeing that mip vs the last years mip make me wanna buy it hands down
Curiosity about solar charging lens improvements
well it says power sapphire solar charging lens

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about backup navigation methods
Uses AA batteries so easy to carry along a couple extra or pick up at a gas station if needed
A pair of AA Lithium batteries usually last me a good 32 hours of recording.
I think the 20x pans the map a tiny bit faster, but it's the same exact form factor, same UI, same everything.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Using old GPS for privacy reasons
I'm actually thinking about buying one for privacy reasons.
Smartphones have good GPS functionality in most locations
The GPS functionality on phones is fairly good and will work in most locations so long as you’ve preloaded the maps for locations that have no cell phone coverage.
Comparison of watch GPS vs standalone units
GPS watch vs stand alone unit? Garmin instinct/fenix or inreach/montana
Preference for smartphone apps over dedicated devices
Apps on your phone will get that job done.
I bikepack with my cellphone and apps and a backup paper map.
Comparison between Garmin and Wahoo devices
Finally the software is in order, and you no longer worry about a Garmin software update breaking your GPS right before a ride.
Discussion on the cost justification of GPS features
Why are gps units still expensive even though cell phone apps such as google, apple maps and waze have taken over the market?
Would you really say it is 200$ worth.
Comparison of Garmin Fenix with Coros devices
The AMOLED screen is nicer that the Fr965.
Discussion on the interpretation of Garmin's description and specs
You're reading into Garmin's description meaning that's not explicitly said.
That's not an opinion. That's a false statement of fact.
Discussion about preferences for different watch sizes
What an amazing watch it is for all use cases.
Comparison between Fenix 7s and Fitbit in terms of battery life
My fenix 7s solar goes 11-12 days with daily sleep and activity tracking.
My missus gets worst case about 7 days (she charges once it hits 20%) and that is with backlight on gesture at 20% and daily GPS runs of about an hour including music playback.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Challenges of using Google Maps for cycling
Google is great for driving but pretty terrible for cycling, especially if you are trying to avoid riding on roads.
Challenges of relying on smartphones for navigation
GPS probably isn’t going to work forever.
Concerns about smartphone reliability in remote areas
I still vastly prefer a handheld GPS, I've seen phones conk out or have app/connectivity issues to many times in the slightest bit of adverse weather to trust them.
I carry a physical GPS unit still.
Discussion on the future of satellite messaging in smartphones
Nothing a stand-alone unit can really do better than your phone, unless you want to be able to message with it, and soon phones should be able to use satellite messaging as well.
Discussion on the usability of very old GPS devices
Are very old GPS still usable? I have a nuvi 750 from more than a decade ago.
