What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Ideal choice for biking with map functions
I think the fenix is an ideal choice if you don’t bike often and would want a sports watch anyway.
Low power consumption compared to smartphones
Uses less power than a smartphone.
Garmin is a leading company for mapping and emergency services
Garmin currently is the leading company that does devices that do mapping, texting, and emergency services all in one.
Handheld GPS is preferred for reliability in adverse weather
I still vastly prefer a handheld GPS, I've seen phones conk out or have app/connectivity issues to many times in the slightest bit of adverse weather to trust them.
Garmin devices are tougher and more reliable than phones
I carry a garmin because phones are too fragile for my liking. I am in rugged and remote areas by myself so I wanted something tougher and more reliable than my phone.
Garmin handheld GPS is reliable for outdoor use
They're relatively inexpensive, easy to use, lightweight and accurate.
Garmin devices offer free lifetime updates
I have 3 and all of them have free lifetime upgrades.
Really? Mine has endless lifetime updates.
Effective as a backup navigation tool
Nothing a stand-alone unit can really do better than your phone, unless you want to be able to message with it, and soon phones should be able to use satellite messaging as well.
The mapping on the Fenix is really just an emergency backup. It works but is hard to navigate well.
Saves battery life on smartphones
I saved a lot of battery on my phone and it is better in rain.
Well-suited for military training
It makes recon life 10x easier
Comprehensive GPS capabilities
If you want an all encompassing GPS then yeah the 67i will do everything you want and is probably the best “complete” unit.
Long battery life with AA batteries
A pair of AA Lithium batteries usually last me a good 32 hours of recording.
Reliable for outdoor navigation
Uses AA batteries so easy to carry along a couple extra or pick up at a gas station if needed.
Compatible with multiple map types
Curious, what maps do you have loaded on yours? Do you have city navigator on it too?
Garmin devices are seen as more reliable than smartphones for navigation
I bikepack with my cellphone and apps and a backup paper map.
Garmin Explore 2 is a good match for navigation needs
Garmin explore 2 seems to fit what you search
Dedicated GPS devices have superior battery management.
a dedicated GPS unit has a number of benefits over a GPS app on a phone
GPS units can be preloaded with maps for offline use.
Plenty of map apps can download offline maps to use when you're in areas with bad/no reception
Handheld GPS devices are sturdy and waterproof.
The handheld GPSs are quite sturdy and waterproof. The majority of phones are not.
Lifetime map updates are beneficial
Now that Google maps can download maps and work without any mobile data, it pretty much killed the main reason to hold onto an old GPS.
The old GPS has the issues: Map stitching issues, often inaccurate, and sometimes takes too long to recognize turns, but it still works well enough for my needs.
Older GPS devices can be more accurate
Often older GPS devices are more accurate as they were single goal devices and didn’t have to share space and battery power with all other uses.
Improved reliability with newer models
Battery life is unbelievable, the touch screen is great, GPS mapping/directions never fail me and I rarely get ant+ drops now.
Positive experience with GPS navigation
I've been using Garmin for few years and I'm ok with it.
Standalone GPS units have preloaded maps
Standalone GPS units have the maps already installed and those cost a lot of money for companies to create and keep updated.
Garmin units provide reliable navigation for road trips
I am thankful to have a navigation system other than my phone because it saved me from getting lost a couple of times in areas where I didn't get any data signal like the desert and mountains for Google Maps.
New user interface is appealing
While it took me a while not to miss the amoled screen, I find the MIP to be less distracting.
Long battery life during activities
I love the new watch but I went from MIP-Fenix 8 I wouldn’t go back to MIP now.
Outstanding battery life with solar charging
Not gonna lie, the Enduro 3 is pretty awesome.
The battery life is a fun bonus although I don’t get anywhere near pushing the limits that would require the enduro battery.
Follow up… I got the enduro 3 and you were 100% right. I love it!
Easy integration with Garmin Connect
Garmin connect is really easy to use. You can send workouts etc straight from your phone onto your watch.
Long battery life compared to smartwatches
My Garmin lasts 2 weeks. Never going back.
Garmin devices are favored for fitness tracking
Battery life is miles better than my tiny 40mm Watch4, and probably better than the 5 Pro too.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Old GPS technology may become obsolete
GPS probably isn’t going to work forever. I have paper USGS maps of all areas within a week’s hike of my home.
Smartphones are seen as adequate for recreational backpacking
Smart phones do this adequately and arguably better because they can have different apps that look at the data differently.
Some Garmin units become slow or unusable over time
I have a nuvi 50, and honestly it's slow AF. I am keeping it in my go bag only for disaster scenarios - it's barely usable for regular navigation.
Old GPS units may reach End of Life and lose functionality
Even if it still technically works, it's the manufacturer that determines the end of the device's life.
Small screen can hinder navigation
A watch is a much smaller screen and more finnicky to use than a stand alone unit or an app on your phone.
Navigation apps on smartphones are considered sufficient
Apps on your phone will get that job done.
Older GPS devices may need frequent updates to stay functional
Sure, if you can update it’s map data
Then use google….. your GPS will be out of date and will need to be updated.
Older models may become obsolete over time
Are very old GPS still usable? I have a nuvi 750 from more than a decade ago.
Previous models were unreliable
Your experience with it is not typical.
All Garmins just seem(ed) to have an expiration date on them. Extremely frustrating.
Garmin issued a software update that broke pairing of their OWN HRM straps, for over a solid month.
Standalone GPS units can be expensive
Why are gps units still expensive even though cell phone apps such as google, apple maps and waze have taken over the market?
A Lot of the stand alone units price is for replicated features.
Missing auto backlight feature
Oh really? There is no auto backlight feature on the enduro 3? I really was hoping they would improve it instead of removing it.
I think they’re working out the bugs. At this point, it should be a standard feature.
Concerns about switching from other models
I am glad I bought the Enduro 3. I love the MIP screen personally over AMOLED as it mimics the look of a real watch face as opposed to a smart phone, and it is always on.
Lacks smaller size options
And unfortunately no smaller sizes.
Limited upgrade necessity if owning previous models
I don't think it is necessarily better, just better Battery life from Solar and new UI.
Limited smart features compared to other smartwatches
Depends what you use it for.
Takes time to adjust from smartwatches like Apple Watch
I went from an Apple Watch to a garmin forerunner 965. I would say it took about a month to get used to it.
Devices may become obsolete quickly
Garmin device lifespan? How old is your Garmin? Or how long have Garmin watches lasted for you?

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Smartphones can work well for GPS if maps are preloaded
The GPS functionality on phones is fairly good and will work in most locations so long as you’ve preloaded the maps for locations that have no cell phone coverage.
Users prefer solid navigation without extra features
I don’t know why everything must be so confusing and complicated.
It uses 2 AA batteries and lasts 3 days always on.
Hardware of GPS units is specialized, contributing to costs
Some of the hardware is also kind of specialized, which adds cost, even if it seems low tech on the surface.
Generosity in the community
Almost 5 years later and as soon as I bought my new watch and set my old one on the table I knew I had to give away.
It’s inspiring to see generosity like this :) mad respect

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Smartphone apps can serve as effective alternatives
I use an old android smartphone with Locus Maps which I mount to my handle bars when touring.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Users often seek simpler GPS devices over smartphones
Simpler is better for me though.
Bluetooth connectivity is valuable for route planning
the phone connectivity actually is a big plus because you can create a route on your phone and directly send it to your gps via bluetooth, no signal required.
Users often prefer simpler devices over smartphones for navigation
I just want a handheld device for mapping and location tracking.
Users have mixed experiences with Garmin
They used to be horribly unreliable, but I think it's unjustified nowadays.
Thanks for this, precisely what I was asking for. That makes a lot of sense.
Strava and Komoot require subscriptions for full features
Not the most accurate but if you're cycling on the road then the road should be telling enough to not get lost!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Google Maps is not reliable for cycling navigation
Google is great for driving but pretty terrible for cycling, especially if you are trying to avoid riding on roads.
Concerns about privacy with cellphones
Cellphones make it way too easy for corporations etc to track your location.
Concerns about smartphone fragility and reliability for navigation
I carry a physical GPS unit still. Used to be a Garmin GPSMaps 64 and now it's a GPSMaps 67i with the satellite SOS functionality.
Smartphones can overheat when used as GPS devices in certain conditions.
I've tried mounting a phone on my handlebars, but they overheat easily.
Users often upgrade before devices fail
The lifespan of my Garmin devices is limited more by my attention span than their longevity.
Garmin watches not seen as heirloom products
No one is buying one to pass down to their kids, like a Rolex or something like that, for example.
