This stainless steel grinder allows for versatile grain types and adjustable coarseness, making it suitable for a variety of culinary applications. Consumers appreciate the compact design which offers easy storage, and many highlight the health benefits of milling their own grains at home, noting that "the freshness of the flour" is a major advantage. Feedback also reveals satisfaction with its durability, as one user stated, "BEST mill I ever owned and it'll outlast me!" Positive Feedback

There are pieces of bran that are sometimes quite large even on the smallest setting.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Compact design for easy storage
My opinion has always been that for not much more money you can get a mill that mills much faster and higher capacity.
Ability to customize flour fineness
I like milling my own whole grains to the fineness that suits me.
Health benefits from home-milled grains
Once you have flour and starter, you just need to combine that with water and a bit of salt, turning it for a few hours, letting it rise some, then baking it.
Convenient multi-grain capability
My latest bread is 28% bread flour with the rest being a combination of fresh milled hard white, hard red, einkorn and emmer.
Freshness of home-milled flour
Love the freshness of the flour.
It is in my opinion worth it because you get fresher more flavorful flour of higher varieties (at least in my experience).
Longer shelf life for whole grains
remember that grains last much longer than milled flour, so you can buy, e.g. 25 or 50lbs and be OK as long as you store it well
Affordable option for milling
It’s very slow and loud, but can get the job done for cheap.
High quality and durability
BEST mill I ever owned and it'll outlast me! The quality is outstanding - the way things used to be made!
Non-electric operation is ideal for home use
All in all, we're pretty pleased with the grain maker 99.
Positive user experience with customer service
I've saved your post to refer back to when it's time for us to buy our mill.
Versatile use for different grains
There are countless numbers of books and online resources.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Inconsistent grain size on fine setting
There are pieces of bran that are sometimes quite large even on the smallest setting.
Inconsistent flour texture on fine setting
the flour is so much more consistent and fine.
Higher cost of whole grains
I have the kitchen aide attachment mill and I love it.
Inconsistent fineness for whole wheat
Never could get whole wheat ground as finely as I would like, even with multiple passes.
Hard on the mixer motor
It’s the hardest attachment on the motor. If you use your mixer for other things, I’d suggest getting a standalone unit.
Concerns about the longevity of metal grinding discs
I am a little concerned about metal grinding discs vs stone grinding.
Ineffective grinding for fine flour with KitchenAid attachment
it’s really quite slow and doesn’t give a good grind for quality flour even when putting the grain through it twice
I was dissatisfied with how coarse the final product was and eventually stopped using it and bought a Mockmill
Slow grinding speed of KitchenAid mill attachment
Personally I think this mixer attachment is very loud (mainly noise from the stand mixer because you have to use it at max speed) and it takes a long time to mill a batch if flour.
Some stand-alones are faster and somewhat quieter, but they will cost more as well.
Loud operation of KitchenAid mill attachment
I have the mock mill attachment for my kitchen-aid and like it. I usually do two passes through the mill to give it a consistency I like.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Curiosity about grain mill efficiency and operation
How many cups of flour do you get in a minute? From the reviews, the KitchenAid attachment needs to rest after three minutes of working for 10 to 15 minutes.
Curiosity about grain sourcing
Any idea on where to find a manual for it? The newer mills have different settings that don’t correspond to this model.
Seeking quality wheat seed for milling flour
Looking for best quality for the best price.
The soft wheat you have works well for pastries, delicate things like cookies, or for use in cooking like if you are making a roux.
The Sequoia is particularly cool as its bran is super high in carotene and just dyes everything it touches.
Discussion of experiences with different grain mills
a couple of months ago, a friend gave me a spare electric motor which I planned to use on my lathe.
Is it 100% freshly milled or a mix with bread flour? The loaf looks amazing!

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Interest in experimenting with home-milled recipes
I plan on trying to make entirely home milled but I def need to do a lot of experimenting and research!
Interest in the versatility of grain mills
Do you recommend buying a grain mill for the home and if so, how difficult is it to find whole grains?
Curiosity about alternative mills
Definitely works, but as others have said it is slow and loud and not as fine as other mills.
Discussion on ease of growing food versus milling grains
are potatoes to go to food for mass producing on a self sufficient farm compared to the other crops?
Potatoes beat corn and grains for the easiest staple to grow.
Interest in hand-powered grain mills
Hand-Powered grain and flour mills? Looking for recommendations for a hand-driven flour mill, to turn wheat grain and corn into a usable flour.
The cheaper ones are a false economy. The Victorio Deluxe, Wondermill Jr. etc all produce really inferior flour to the CLGM and often are harder/more tiring to use as well.
I went with the wonder mill jr deluxe for this reason. I did this because it has a masa auger if you want to make tortillas or tamales, you can also make various nut butters and grind oily grains.
It was also just a little junky feeling compared to the others, but I wouldn't have disqualified for that if it had made as good of flour as either the CLGM or Komo.
Resources for milling rice flour at home
Gluten Free on a Shoestring has an article about milling rice flour and the mill she uses.
Discussion on growing and milling grains
Many gardeners are familiar with growing vegetables, or even fruit trees and bushes, but I don’t hear much about crops like wheat, corn (not the sweet kind), oats, rice, barley, sorghum, amaranth, etc.
Potatoes are the lowest input effort to calorie output ratio of anything I've done, and potatoes are quite easy to store for nearly a year, before they start really sprouting and getting ready for planting again.
Discussion on growing wheat for flour production
Growing grains for flour on the Homestead Does anyone grow wheat to produce their own flour?
I work for a crop improvement agency that develops and conditions a few varieties of wheat, many of which are widely used across the nation.
Then figure out how to hull & grind 27,000 pounds of wheat.
It's surprisingly easy to grow several varieties and maintain a really dynamic yet manageable system 💚
Interest in KitchenAid attachments for milling
Not just for mixing but all these cool ass attachments!

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Interest in comparing grain mills
All of this to say I need a grain mill because the blender just isn't going to cut it, but the cost is a little dicey as i am still starting with this side of things, and I also have a limited amount of counter space so another dedicated appliance isn't ideal.
As a follow up, in your experience and as you have seen on this sub, what mill in the starter range (~100gpm) is the best bang for your buck?
Mockmill 100 or something similar. I definitely think a stone mill is the way to go.
Here is whole review video on the Nutrimill Harvest Grain Mill and talks about the kitchen aid mill attachment too.
Desire for information on flour bran reduction
Whole wheat is fine, but I wouldn't want to use it all the time.
Discussion on affordable gluten-free flour alternatives
my neighbor recently was diagnosed with Celiac, and she is looking for recommendations to mill flour at home
There are hand crank to electric, all different ranges in between.
Rice flour at an Asian market is really not very expensive.
Micronizing mills work best. They are loud but make very fine flour without the 'sparkles' in coarser rice flour.
Curiosity about sourcing fresh grains
Looks really great! Where do you get your fresh grains?
I have found that the freshly milled grains do best with an extended autolyse, and the more coarsely ground they are the longer the autolyse should be.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Comparative experiences with different grain mills
Generally, I find the best balance between flavor and texture is when wholemeal flour is at or lower than 30% of the total flour used.
Discussion on personal experiences with grain milling
It was awesome in my 30s. I never needed to go to a gym, and I've always liked the idea of not being reliant on power should it fail.
Comparative experiences with different grain brands
I think it was maybe slightly better (and cheaper in store) but since moving we've shifted to Palouse Brands which is actually cheaper with shipping on AMZ than it is direct unless they're having a sale.
Check out Bluebird grain farms. They are a Washington farm and 5 lb hard white berries were $13.95. Mills up beautifully.
dang I want to support Palouse bc i live in WA and they're local but central milling's got 50 lb for the same price or less than the 25 lb sacks.
The prices at Palouse have varied a bit, and you’re right the current price at central milling is looking pretty good.
