Snoop's Take

The KitchenAid KGM All Metal Grain Mill Attachment is designed to connect to any KitchenAid Stand Mixer, allowing users to grind a variety of non-oily grains with ease. This versatile attachment can produce grinds from coarse to fine, making it suitable for baking or brewing purposes. Consumer feedback highlights its compact size and effectiveness for small batches, with users noting, "it’s a great space saving and relatively affordable choice." Many appreciate the adjustable settings that allow for precise grinding, exemplified by a reviewer stating, "The grain attachment is a solid product and can be adjusted from coarse to pretty fine." However, some users caution about its impact on the mixer motor, with concerns about overheating and potential damage, leading to mixed sentiments about its long-term use. Overall, while the KitchenAid KGM All Metal Grain Mill Attachment is praised for its convenience and performance in small quantities, potential buyers should consider the risks associated with using it on their KitchenAid mixers. It may not be the best choice for heavy-duty grain milling, but it can serve well for occasional use in home baking or brewing tasks.

I just don’t think the attachment is worth it.

Positive Feedback

It’s the hardest attachment on the motor. If you use your mixer for other things, I’d suggest getting a standalone unit.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Compact size for storage
I just don’t think the attachment is worth it.
it’s a great space saving and relatively affordable choice.
Good for small batches and occasional use
I only do abut 250g at a time and it takes less than a minute for a corse grind and a little longer for a finer grind.
Just curious how it does.
Makes a good crush, the coarsest crust is actually a little too coarse for BIAB.
Adjustable settings provide better efficiency
this cracks me up - people don't know this is adjustable???
Adjustable grind settings for versatility
The grain attachment is a solid product and can be adjusted from coarse to pretty fine.
Effective for making fine flour
It makes very fine flour. So fine, I actually went a couple clicks courser.
Good for small batches of grain
Has anyone ever heard of someone using the kitchen aid mixer grain mill attachment to mill grain for brewing?
Overall it's decent in a pinch and if you get the attachment cheap, but it's not a proper grain mill.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Hard on the mixer motor
It’s the hardest attachment on the motor. If you use your mixer for other things, I’d suggest getting a standalone unit.
Small hopper requires frequent hand feeding
Looks small, like you’d constantly be feeding it grain.
Too fine grind for some applications
Particles come out too small.
Overheats the mixer during use
Oats. These reviews say these attachments make the kitchenaid overheat and only accept small amounts at a time and cleaning each use.
Designed primarily for flour, not for crushing grain
definitely not. you want a roller mill to crush the grain without creating flour, this is designed to make flour.
Slow milling speed and can overheat
I wouldn't recommend it. I got one with the intent to use it as a grain mill for brewing but it is really slow and can overheat, which can burn out your kitchenaid motor.
Can burn out KitchenAid motor
It's a lot of crushing, I'd hate to blow out the motor crushing such a high volume of grains.
Risk of burning out KitchenAid mixer gears
I've heard that they run the risk of burning out the kitchen aid gears too quickly.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Interest in video reviews and other milling topics
Here is whole review video on the Nutrimill Harvest Grain Mill and talks about the kitchen aid mill attachment too.
I have the kitchen aid mill, and I very much like it.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Interest in homebrew applications
Curious if it could be useful in homebrew application.
Consideration of home brewing equipment for grain grinding.
Maybe look towards home brewing equipment? A grain mill would probably suit your needs pretty well.
Molinito and nixtamatic recommended for proper masa grind.
The only things that will get you a proper grind for tortilla masa is the molinito from masienda or the nixtamatic.
Various uses for milling beyond just flour
I WOULD use it for things like cracked grains, ground nuts, and things like that.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparison with other milling options
I definitely think a stone mill is the way to go.
Comparison with standalone mills
Definitely works, but as others have said it is slow and loud and not as fine as other mills.
Personally I think this mixer attachment is very loud (mainly noise from the stand mixer because you have to use it at max speed) and it takes a long time to mill a batch if flour.
I have one. I was dissatisfied with how course the final product was and eventually stopped using it and bought a Mockmill.
Some stand-alones are faster and somewhat quieter, but they will cost more as well.
Comparison with dedicated grain mills
Just buy a regular grain mill and use a drill to power it. You'll rip through your grain in a few minutes.
Interest in comparing different milling options
Could I just dip my toe in grinding wheat berries in my vitamix? Or do I need to use a mill to get flour that works?
Interest in various milling options
I'm not actually sure which one is better for what you are doing.
Interest in additional KitchenAid attachments
My biggest wishlist item to buy next is the grain mill. I think it's worth it.
Inquiry about better at-home milling options
Anyone have great or terrible experiences with either unit? or both? Is there another better value for at home milling?
Discussion on alternative milling options
it does quite well for me, my 5kg takes about 3x10 minute batches to get through.
Unless you're also planning to use it for milling flour, it's only slightly more money for a mill designed for brewing.
Discussion on alternatives for grain milling
I would like to buy a nice grain mill but there is no way I'm spending more than $100 just to crush grain.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Interest in home grain growing and milling
My first experiment, on the finest setting, was too fine - it went right through my sifter and I only removed maybe 15% of the bran.
I find it takes a lot of sifting, and occasionally regrinding the leftovers to get all of the endosperm I want and not lose 30% of my flour weight.
Why do you want to remove that much bran? That’s the good stuff !!
So the KitchenAid mill is not necessarily an obstacle to getting this right, if I really work on the sifting?
Food mills are not suitable for grinding dried corn.
Food mills are absolutely not the thing to go with.
Concerns about high-volume grinding capabilities of grain mills.
Most grain mills can't do wet stuff, they just clog.
Mixed experiences with grain milling efficiency
Great for cracked wheat for baking, but it was still over milled for brewing.
