Snoop's Take

The Mr. Coffee Programmable Coffee Maker is a compact and efficient machine designed to brew up to 5 cups of coffee, ideal for those with limited kitchen space. Users have expressed mixed feelings about this coffee maker; while some appreciate its easy-to-use features and decent performance, others have reported issues with overflow and inconsistent espresso quality. As one user noted, 'The quality of the shot is well beyond what I would have expected!', highlighting that it can meet expectations for basic brewing. However, concerns about the design and quality persist, with feedback indicating that the machine is not a true espresso maker and that the components may not hold up over time. While some users enjoy the convenience and compact size, others advise caution, stating, 'Because Mr. Coffee is the absolute worst basic coffee maker on the market.' Overall, the Mr. Coffee Programmable Coffee Maker may be suitable for casual coffee drinkers but may fall short for those seeking high-quality espresso or durability.

Positive Feedback

If you buy this, I wouldn't expect much in terms of quality and consistency of espresso.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Reusable filter reduces overflow
I’ve had it for maybe 14 months now and it’s overflowing.
A coarser grind will increase flow rate in the filter basket so it's less likely to overflow.
Decent performance for making coffee
works decent enough to make mediocre latte art and gets the job done :)
Produces decent steam pressure for espresso
I will have to relook into it at your request, my understanding is that it produces decent steam pressure but lacks crema in most instances.
I will try and snag one of these, it looks to be on par with the crema I get from an aeropress right now.
Good quality espresso shots
The quality of the shot is well beyond what I would have expected!

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Low quality and inconsistent espresso
If you buy this, I wouldn't expect much in terms of quality and consistency of espresso.
I am only beginning to learn the art of espresso but even I can tell you not to buy that one.
Design issues causing overflow
Might be user issue or grind size of the coffee.
Low quality compared to commercial machines
Results from a sub-$100 machine will be drastically worse.
You likely won't get drinks any better than your moka pot out of that Mr. coffee machine.
Not a true espresso machine
So it's not an actual espresso machine but rather a differently shaped moka pot.
Not a pump machine, leading to mixed reviews
If this machine has a pump disregard what I said 😅.
Water doesn't get hot enough for proper extraction
Water doesn't get hot enough to fully extract the coffee grounds, the coffee grounds don't get saturated equally which results in an uneven brew.
Single spout design leads to uneven brewing
Not all drip machines are bad, but many of them are designed poorly and with shortcuts.
Made with low-quality components that fail quickly
Those machines are made with the absolute cheapest components which wind up failing 2 years or sooner usually.
Difficult to clean internal components
you cant clean out the inside tubes in there that pipe the water in, and it'll calcify and get mineral buildups.
Inconsistent quality of espresso
I'm interested in how you were getting good crema and microfoam with this one- I had mine for about a year (full disclosure: I'm a bit of a noob at coffee anyway) and consistently had watery espresso and regular foam (not microfoam).
Inconsistent quality and overflow issues
Right now my quality is Aldi coffee grounds that overflow the filter into the coffee so I have grounds in my coffee every cup.
Because Mr. Coffee is the absolute worst basic coffee maker on the market.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on palate escalation in coffee appreciation
Enjoy the cheap and easy while you can.
Nostalgia for previous Mr. Coffee models
For $40, these things are simply remarkable.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on maximizing coffee quality with a basic machine
What steps should I take as far as preparation to make the best possible coffee with a kind of crappy coffee maker?
Our family appreciates good coffee, but by no means cares all that much (they are 'pour a cup and add flavored creamer no matter what the coffee is' type).
A Good grinder and some light or medium roast beans will get you a good enough cup.
Use good water. Weigh the water and coffee to get the proper ratio. Make sure the machine is clear.
Mention of experimenting with coffee and beer flavors
I just need a cup of Joe to hold me over till noon.

Discussion about espresso machines and alternatives
Mr. Coffee Café Barista Espresso Maker? I've been looking around on Amazon at espresso machines. [This one](http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Coffee-BVMC-ECMP1000-Barista-Espresso/dp/B007K9OIMU/ref=sr_1_9?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1389891339&sr=1-9&keywords=espresso+machine) seems to have a lot of options for the price, and it has good reviews.
TL;DR- The frother on this machine is dumb and shows Mr. Coffee doesn't know what they are doing. Save $100 and buy a delonghi EC155 instead, because you aren't adding any real value until you get into the $500 machines.
TL;DR: I would say the money is better spent on brew methods.
Discussion about upgrading from basic coffee makers
Want to upgrade, willing to spend 100-500$. Not willing to invest in a Coffee maker that is too time intensive.
Personal anecdotes about transitioning from Mr. Coffee to better methods
Man you really missed out on a Mini mill that you could get at the same price point.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Mention of a recall related to the product
There was a recall… hence the tag on the power cord
Popularity of Mr. Coffee in the past
In the 1970s & 1980s there was (maybe still is?) a brand of coffee maker called "Mr. Coffee." They were VERY popular-- as big as Keurig is today.
The Mr Coffee brand is still going, they make espresso and Keurig-compatible machines too now and are usually pretty cheap at Target/Walmart etc...
Discussion of Mr. Coffee brand evolution
There is a famous coffee maker brand called Mr. Coffee, the brand made a few other things with similar naming schemes (Mrs. Tea for example) so there was a joke that in the future everything would be named Mr [device].
Cultural references to Mr. Coffee in media
It’s a joke on Mr. Coffee.
In the film Back to the Future, the car model used for the time machine was a Delorean
Sentimental value attached to the gift
It's from momma, so love it with all your heart.
Historical significance of Mr. Coffee in home brewing
People have lost context of how radical the Mr. Coffee was in its time.
Concerns about coffee quality and preparation time
why is the mr. coffee not cutting it? what are you looking for in a coffee maker? what do you expect in a cup of coffee as far as quality?
I really love my super automatic. You load it with whole beans and water. When I wake up in the morning I turn it on to let it heat up, takes about a minute. When it is ready another button press grinds the beans and brews the coffee, then ejects a little coffee puck into a bin.
Discussion on alternatives to Mr. Coffee for better flavor
Am I letting myself down by continuing to use the Mr. Coffee and not spending more money and purchasing an aeropress or french press, or am I getting close enough with the drip machine that it's not worth the extra investment when money is so tight?
Your other alternative is a cone with filter, which should be less than $10.
My FrenchPress is the "easiest" to use simply because (IMHO) it allows for the most flex.
