Snoop's Take

The Black Diamond Crag Half-Finger Rock Climbing Gloves are designed specifically for climbers needing hand protection while belaying. Made with durable synthetic leather and breathable mesh, these gloves provide essential support during outdoor climbing activities. Consumer feedback highlights several strengths of the gloves, particularly their thumb protection and durability. One user noted, "BD last longer and are easier to fix, have the thumb protection and fit my hands better than some of the other brands." However, some climbers expressed concerns about dexterity with thicker gloves and inconsistent glove design changes, leading to mixed reviews overall. Despite some negative experiences reported, the Black Diamond Crag Gloves are generally recommended for climbers looking for reliable protection while belaying. With a solid reputation for durability and comfort, they may be a worthy addition to your climbing gear.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Thumb protection feature
BD last longer and are easier to fix, have the thumb protection and fit my hands better than some of the other brands.
Useful for protecting hands and preventing dirt
OP, don’t listen to the people saying you have bad technique if you use belay gloves.
Durable gloves for crack climbing
+1 for the BD crack gloves. Also look way better than any of the competition
Good for outdoor climbing
Great gloves, used on Mont Blanc earlier this year.

Where it needs some work!

Some users have had bad experiences with BD gloves
Many folks I climb with have bad experiences with all of the BD winter climbing gloves.
Thicker gloves hinder dexterity
Best mountaineering gloves for cold weather: Black Diamond Helio vs Black Diamond Guide Climbing Mt Hood in early March.
Sorry to not answer your question but those thick gloves are not very dexterous.
I prefer lighter, more dextrous gloves for activities with backup warm gloves for idle time or extreme conditions.
I carry two sets of gloves. One lighter dexterous glove: when you’re moving, your blood is pumping, you don’t need oven mitts on your hands.
Gloves do not last long
Gloves are gloves.
Preference for fingerless gloves
Cheep leather gardening gloves work great, don't waste money on climbing specific gloves.
I use fingerless leather sailing gloves. Works great.
Fear of losing friction with gloves
I'm terrified to use them as I'd rather burn my fingers than feel less friction on the rope!
Inconsistent glove design changes
They keep changing the design but keeping the name.
Gloves can get wet and cold
these black diamond mountaineering gloves that got wet, and then freezing cold.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about glove types and materials
Soft shell climbing gloves I’m looking for a new pair of climbing gloves that are a softy shell and have great grip.
Under cuff or over the cuff?
There’s 2 different types and I’m not sure if they still make the original.
The thicker leather is what does it. The original uses a goat leather (if I remember) so the grain is smoother and softer.
Preference for dexterity in climbing gloves
their dexterity is the best feature.
Preference for climbing gloves varies among players
Some people don't like Climbing Gloves with Jetpack but whipping when you don't want to accidentally grab a wall negates most of the issues they can cause.
Comparison of gloves with industrial fishing gloves
Interesting to see it’s also a thing being done by world class alpinists.
Comparison of gloves based on warmth and dexterity
Not planning to do anything crazy technical.
Of course they are quite bulky and it would be hard to use them for climbing.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about using multiple gloves for different conditions
I very much second this comment.
The BD guide gloves are pretty beefy, with significantly reduced dexterity.
Discussion on using multiple pairs of gloves
Your gloves will get wet in the mountains regardless of whether they have goretex or not.
I actually did bring a second pair. I just wanted to streamline my gear and bring less but I suppose I had it right the first time :)
Discussion on alternatives for waterproof gloves
You should consider the Showa 281 for a waterproof glove, structurally waterproof and breathable (somewhat) so it can take a beating and won’t ever leak at the seams.
Inquiry about using gloves over other gloves
Are you supposed to use them on top of some other gloves ?

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparison of gloves based on use case
The BD are nice for thinner hand cracks and they feel more like wearing tape.
Personal preference plays a significant role in glove choice
I find it more comfortable on the lower with gloves on.
Comparison of gloves is common among climbers
Here's a breakdown of options
Comparison of gloves based on rock type
Love them. They’re like climbing shoes, different gloves for different stone and cracks.
Discussion about various glove brands for climbing
Tape is best, but a lot of hassle for single pitch.
They don’t have any extra padding, but more often than not I’m glad for that.
Discussion about alternatives to BD gloves
Best BD Punisher alternative (best ice climbing gloves?) I have been using BD Punishers for many years now and I love their warmth/dexterity ratio.
https://www.go2marine.com/showa-282-temres-gloves
Outdoor research bitter blaze glove? I haven't used them, but just purchased a pair based on reviews specifically mentioning suitability for ice climbing.
Comparison of gloves based on personal experience
I haven't found a better lead glove for cold weather ice climbing.
Preference for budget gloves over high-end options
Do not waste money on the fanciest gloves. If you climb a lot, go budget.
I winter climb a lot in Canada and destroy a lot of gloves. Never buy high end climbing industry gloves, except your hard trad mixed cold weather gloves.
Discussion on the best gloves for cold weather
They are superior!! I would use these and have a pair of belay mitts... Belay mitts is where you should put your glove money.
RAB Guide gloves are the warmest and most agile ones I could find.
Comparison of various glove brands and models
These things are amazing. I have two pairs now.
I like the Rab Guide gloves a lot but did not have a need for them given my current kit.
Discussion on glove preferences
the friction of this rope is getting crazy hot
Discount availability for BD gloves
BD guides are great gloves. Can be had pretty often for significant discount too
Experience with budget gloves outperforming more expensive options
It’s amazing how they stay warm and fuzzy even in super wet/icy conditions.
Preference for multiple inexpensive gloves over one expensive pair
Looking into the following: OR Arete, Black Diamond Enforcer, Pursuit, & Soloist
Gloves: Quantity over quality. Better to have several cheap pairs to rotate through as they get wet than one fancy pair of gloves.
Advice to order climbing gloves one size larger
Whatever you do order at least 1 size larger than your normal glove size.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Preference for tape over gloves
I'm a tape guy but before I was - Ocun. The thinner ones with the red finger loops are great
Ignore people talking about tape. Unless you are climbing near your limit gloves are fine and far more convenient.
I would agree that tape is best that being said, I have had a better experience with [the G7 ones.
Preference for tape vs. gloves for climbing
It all boils down to comfort, IMO.
Humorous take on the glove buying experience
MN girl out here doin it in -6°F and the glove situation is like I’m a glove dealer operating out of my car lol
Preference for generic gloves over BD gloves
I honestly prefer a generic waterproof work glove from Marks Work Wearhouse (Canada only maybe?) it doesn’t matter the brand but for the cost and the durability they were better.
Dislike for gloves in HD due to sticking issues
I think a lot of the dislike for the gloves in HD comes from the fact that they always adhere, causing general slowdowns and sometimes getting the player killed when they would unexpectedly stick to a surface.
