Snoop's Take

The Black Diamond Crag Half-Finger Rock Climbing Gloves are designed for climbing enthusiasts who require durable and protective gear while belaying. Made with breathable stretch mesh and synthetic leather, these gloves offer both comfort and functionality in various climbing situations. Consumer feedback highlights the gloves’ durability, with users noting, "BD last longer and are easier to fix," demonstrating their preference for Black Diamond over other brands. Users also appreciate the gloves for their protection against rope burn, as one climber mentioned, "belay gloves are awesome!" However, some climbers feel that the thickness of the gloves can hinder dexterity in thin cracks, with quotes like, "thicker gloves make thin hand cracks harder" reflecting this sentiment. Overall, the Black Diamond Crag Half-Finger Gloves are highly recommended for those looking for reliable belaying gloves, especially for longer and more demanding climbing sessions, despite some concerns regarding their thickness in specific climbing techniques.

Not for you? Check out our other rated Climbing Gloves

So I prefer the BDs for most since they feel thinner

Positive Feedback

Thicker gloves make thin hand cracks harder and give you less feel and feedback, which I've heard can slow down learning of good jamming technique.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Durability and longevity of Black Diamond gloves
So I prefer the BDs for most since they feel thinner
BD last longer and are easier to fix, have the thumb protection and fit my hands better than some of the other brands.
The BD gloves are by far the best on the market.
BD crack gloves. I climb around Tahoe and they make long crack days a delight
Gloves provide good protection against rope burn
I am using fingerless ones I got from Amazon but they are still kinda thin and I felt my hands burn.
belay gloves are awesome! Your hands can get dirty so the gloves are nice when flaking a rope that’s been outside.
Ive used BD Crag half finger gloves and they work great for me.
Black Diamond Crag gloves fit well for heavier belaying
I think it’s really personal preference and you basically said exactly same reasons I want gloves.
Comfortable for prolonged use during belaying
I use the BD halfies when I am belaying a ton of ppl for classes or when belaying heavier partner with an ATC on long alpine stuff that a hand injury would be super, super no bueno
Good fit for various climbing situations
I can throw them in a bag on multiptich and use them for specific pitches.
+1 for the BD crack gloves. Also look way better than any of the competition.
Affordable price for quality gloves
they're starting to smell like wet dog because I have super sweaty hands, but they're great.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Thickness makes thin hand cracks harder
Thicker gloves make thin hand cracks harder and give you less feel and feedback, which I've heard can slow down learning of good jamming technique.
Some find gloves unnecessary and prefer bare hands
I tried them on an outdoor trip and it was actually very comfy.
Some users find gloves unnecessary for their style
It all boils down to comfort, IMO.
Thickness may hinder performance in thin hand cracks
I can’t seem to get purchase whenever I place what feels like it should be a good fist jam because my skin is soft and I bruise easily.
Thick gloves lack dexterity
Sorry to not answer your question but those thick gloves are not very dexterous.
I second this assesment.
I carry two sets of gloves.
Some believe gloves are unnecessary
Gloves are gloves.
Preference for bare hands over gloves
I'm terrified to use them as I'd rather burn my fingers than feel less friction on the rope!
Gloves are not suitable for free climbing
those gloves arent really for free climbing, more for belaying like it says in the description.
You can't wear gloves when climbing. You just won't get the grip you need, no matter how the gloves are designed.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about the convenience of gloves for climbing
What is the best crack climbing glove on the market? There seems to be quite a few crack climbing gloves on the market.
Ignore people talking about tape. Unless you are climbing near your limit gloves are fine and far more convenient.
Discussion about warmth and dexterity of BD gloves
Best BD Punisher alternative (best ice climbing gloves?) I have been using BD Punishers for many years now and I love their warmth/dexterity ratio.
I haven't found a better lead glove for cold weather ice climbing.
General discussion on glove preferences for climbing
Perennial topic over on that other site:
This is really cool advice, thanks!
Discussion about preferences for fingerless vs regular gloves
the friction of this rope is getting crazy hot
Tommy Caldwell recommends the fingerless ones.
I use fingerless leather sailing gloves. Works great.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about glove options for ice climbing
Can anyone tell me what types and how many of each pair of gloves I’ll need to have for a mixed ice climbing trip that will involve ice climbing, rock climbing, belaying and a bunch of waiting around?
Showa 282-02 gloves, size up from your usual for these. Good for wet conditions.
1k glove collection?? Dude I wanna see that
Awesome! This is really helpful. Better to start cheaper at first!
Discussion on glove options for climbing
wondered what the new/current opinions are on the best crack climbing gloves.
Discussion about the capacity of BD packs for climbing gear
Could I get that lot in the 8 without overloading it and getting stuff prodding in the back?
It's like my Salomon Trail running vest, which is super super light, but very fragile (small plastic clips, very thin cord, very thin material, etc.).
I actually attached axes to it in the store to see how it holds up. So, yes you can for sure use it for the purpose of alpine/ice climbing.
I wouldn't want to run in it - it would bounce along.
Personal experiences with alternative glove options
Cheep leather gardening gloves work great, don't waste money on climbing specific gloves.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Personal preferences and experiences with different glove types
The grip wears super fast and they often tear.
I absolutely love my g7 gloves!
Comparison of different glove brands and types
wideboyz are THE crack climbers. they are making their own. only time will tell if they are the best
Tape is best, but a lot of hassle for single pitch.
I like the Outdoor Research ones. They don’t have any extra padding, but more often than not I’m glad for that.
I have had a better experience with [the G7 ones.](https://g7equipment.com/products/handjam) Half because of the bullet warrenty.
Discussion about glove options for climbing
Soft shell climbing gloves I’m looking for a new pair of climbing gloves that are a softy shell and have great grip.
Under cuff or over the cuff?
There’s 2 different types and I’m not sure if they still make the original.
it would be a shame if the new ones got bulkier, their dexterity is the best feature.
Discussion about glove preferences for mountaineering
Best mountaineering gloves for cold weather: Black Diamond Helio vs Black Diamond Guide Climbing Mt Hood in early March.
I bring a second pair of gloves in case the first ones get too sweaty.
Costco liners (Head brand?) are pretty great at ~$8/ pair. I like these paired with some mitts for on breaks/when inactive.
Discussion on budget gloves vs. high-end options for climbing
Showa Atlas Temres 282. They are completely waterproof until you wear a hole in them.
I never buy high end climbing industry gloves, except your hard trad mixed cold weather gloves (there's nothing else that works -10C and colder), and save-your-hands belay mitts.
Recommendations for alternative gloves in cold weather
They are superior!! I would use these and have a pair of belay mitts... Belay mitts is where you should put your glove money.
RAB Guide gloves are the warmest and most agile ones I could find.
They might be called Project Gloves now. Let me check.
I use OR Alpine Alibi -- They are basically a pair of OR warrant gloves with increased warmth.
Reference to other glove options and brands
worth a shot, and buying two pairs of these is still less than buying any climbing-branded stuff on 50% sale.
Personal preferences for climbing gear and techniques
I'm a guitar player and I keep my nails on my right hand longer than my left. This creates a problem not only when trying to get a proper grip and it creates some wear and tear on my nails for when I play.
Climbing is about having fun, so have fun how you want to.
Maybe you can't play with fingernails, but plenty of really good guitarists play with finger picks.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Personal experiences with alternative gloves for ice climbing
Outdoor research bitter blaze glove? I haven't used them, but just purchased a pair based on reviews specifically mentioning suitability for ice climbing.
Personally I love most of CAMPs gloves and I would say out of all the gloves I've tried and seen the gecko ice is pretty amazing.
Personal anecdotes about glove experiences in extreme conditions
MN girl out here doin it in -6°F and the glove situation is like I’m a glove dealer operating out of my car lol
Yeah and if you are out there a set of hand warmers or two for when you feel that you might lose a finger.
Discussion about the product recall affecting Black Diamond equipment
Black Diamond, a climbing equipment manufacturer, have a new product recall for slings.
All of the affected carabiners are US made and again the numbers of actually defective pieces are minuscule.
Slings are used when cleaning an anchor at the top of a sports climb.
