Snoop's Take

The InSinkErator Builder Series BLD50 W/C Kitchen Garbage Disposal is designed to efficiently shred everyday food scraps, making it a convenient addition to any kitchen. With a powerful 1/2 HP motor and simplified installation features, this disposal unit aims to enhance food waste management in households. However, consumer feedback indicates several concerns regarding its performance and longevity. Users have expressed that "you cannot put 5lbs of potato peels down the disposal, it just does not work," highlighting that it may struggle with larger food scraps. Additionally, multiple reviews suggest that modern disposals like this one are often seen as disposable themselves, with one user stating, "they are easy to swap and not that expensive, I would just assume you’ll need a new one every 5-10 years." Considering the feedback, while the InSinkErator BLD50 offers some convenience, prospective buyers should weigh the risk of plumbing issues and the likelihood of needing replacement in a few years. Overall, it may be suitable for light usage but may not be the best option for those seeking a long-lasting disposal solution.

Garbage disposals may not handle large food scraps well.
Yep, you cannot put 5lbs of potato peels down the disposal, it just does not work.
Garbage disposals can lead to plumbing issues.
Two plumbers have told me basically you should not use this for food scraps AT ALL.
The disposal will give you the best results and last the longest if you view it as a tool meant specifically to deal with the bits of food that you -can't- get off of the dishes and such in other ways.
Modern disposals are designed to be disposable and may not last long.
Modern appliances are designed to be disposable (no pun intended).
People waste money on garbage disposals
Unbelievably reliable. It won’t grind up a penny or a screw.
InSinkErator disposals may fail within a few years
They are easy to swap and not that expensive, I would just assume you’ll need a new one every 5-10 years.
Garbage disposals are often unrepairable once they leak.
If the water is leaking out of the bottom of a garbage disposal, it's done.
mine had same bottom leak issue and plumber replaced as it was unrepairable

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Different models have varying horsepower ratings for different uses.
There’s different levels of disposal from like 0.25 hp up to maybe 5 hp.
InSinkErator is considered a good brand.
What is the best garbage disposal? Mine just exploded and poured about 10 gallons of water under my cabinets.
Insinkerator is also good.
Comparison of different models highlights variations in power and materials
More power, still quiet as the 500 but the inside is ALL stainless steel where the 500 is only galvanized (good stuff until the zinc coating wears off and then you’re screwed.)
Different types of garbage disposals include plug-in and hard-wired options.
While replacing disposal you may want to have electrical wiring corrected.
There's two kinds of garbage disposals. Ones that plug into an outlet under the sink, and ones that are hard-wired.
Common presence of garbage disposals in US kitchens
Many (maybe most) kitchens in the US have these built into the sink.
Ease of installation for the new bracket.
Once I put the new bracket on it slid in easily.
Discussion on undermount sinks
Undermount Sink? Yay or Nah? Going back and forth, we can’t decide! Help us.
I love undermount, sweep crumbs straight into the sink.
Aesthetically and practically under mount sinks are far superior as long as the install is done well, im a stone mason by trade and I’ve had the chance to fit probably thousands of under mounts!

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Using citrus peels helps with odors
Just chucking a squeezed lemon / lime half in every once in a while after cocktail hour works for me.
Yes, I typically just do the ice cubes and really small lemon slices. It helps with any odors as well

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Advice on proper usage and care of disposals is common.
the more crap you put in there, the better chance of a clog.
Discussion on choosing high horsepower disposals
I'm looking for something that'll last.
So why not go big for an extra $20 lol.
Costco has unique models of disposals.
I think it’s the same 80022-ISE as seen on the insinkerator website with the only difference is the bottom isn’t stainless steel.
Yes. Same thing happens with TVs.
Discussion on pricing and model comparisons.
This thing is quiet, but be aware that the new baffle design will mean that more water will pool before draining.
Comparison with other brands highlights quality differences
Big mistake.
Discussion on corded vs non-corded disposals
Good info, thank you. Another question. I’m familiar with corded disposals. How does a non corded work? Pros/cons?
Recommendations for cleaning include ice and dish soap
My sister dated a plumber, and his recommendation was similar, minus the bleach and baking soda.
Discussion about exclusive models at Home Depot and Lowe's
both home depo and lowes have it. But they also have another model with same specs but it is labeled "home depo exclusive" or "lowes exclusive" and these "exclusive" ones cost more.
Preference for models with a power cord for easier installation
If you’ve got a plug get it with the cord. Otherwise you’ll need to wire it yourself.
Advice on installation and maintenance
works great and is quieter with less vibration than my old 1/2 horsepower unit
Costco frequently sells disposals
They frequently have disposals on sale. That's where I got my Moen.
Compatibility issues with mounting brackets between brands.
Does anyone know if mounts are typically universal between disposals?
the one that most KitchenAid disposals use doesn't fit.
the hole in the sink is the same size for all of them, and the brackets take less than 5 minutes to swap, and the new disposal comes with a new (shiny!) bracket.
The bracket is part of the piece that gets inserted from above and that gets replaced real easily.
Mention of alternative disposal brands.
Way cheaper and excellent quality compared to the badger/ insinkerator

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Older models have been reliable for decades.
The ones in my house and my parents’ house have been going strong since the 1980s.
InSinkErator is considered the gold standard
Insinkerator is the gold standard.
Discussion on various brands and models
Functionality > Longevity > Sound
Discussions about the lifespan of garbage disposals
having been without a disposal for six weeks I've had enough and I'm just going to buy a new unit.
Availability of other brands with fewer issues
We have a Moen that hasn't given us any issues. It's surprisingly quiet as well.
I bought a Waste King and have had zero issues — and I don’t go easy on it!!
Also have a Moen that we've had since October-ish of 2019 (right after we moved into our new place) and it's been great so far.
Misunderstanding of garbage disposal function among children
It wasn't until later I learned the food is more "whacked" into the side walls, until it explodes, and is washed away.
I thought that they were called "In sink erators" for the longest time until I said it once and nobody knew what I was talking about lol
