What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Easy installation
Less than three years later it's failed.
They are easy to swap and not that expensive, I would just assume you’ll need a new one every 5-10 years.
What's a good HP for a garbage disposal? Any recommended brands or ones I should stay away from?
1/2 HP is more than enough. I like the ~$200 InSinkErators because they feel built like tanks and they're 3/4HP and they're still very very quiet.
Reliable performance
I bought a Waste King and have had zero issues — and I don’t go easy on it!!
It is amazing. It eats everything we put in it with ease. It says you can give it bones, so as a test I threw a bunch of chicken bones in it and boom gone.
I used a metal rod and tapped the blades to get it moving and it was able to crush up the glass stuck in it.
Really like ours and it works great!
Easy installation process
The hole in the sink is the same size for all of them, and the brackets take less than 5 minutes to swap, and the new disposal comes with a new (shiny!) bracket.
Once I put the new bracket on it slid in easily.
It’s real easy to replace the bracket though, I’d take the extra 10 minutes and do it.
The bracket is part of the piece that gets inserted from above and that gets replaced real easily.
Great for food waste disposal
They truly are great.
A disposal is much better than cleaning out a drain screen full of rotten food.
Effective for disposing of food waste
I dump it all down the disposal and it's fine.
Convenient for cleaning small food scraps
I've almost always had them but never used them.
I love how easier it is to clean off the sink with all the small bits of food that ends up there anyway.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Risk of clogging with improper use
I can’t trust the people in my house to not put the wrong stuff down— if they can put ANY food down, they’ll put it ALL down.
Can cause clogs with improper use
As a plumber - I wouldn't put one in.
I find them to be pointless. They don't do what people think they should and get upset when they have to call me to clean out egg shells and coffee grounds from the p-trap.
Many of the better kitchens that I work in, have them, and my clients love them, having one ‘is a must’.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comparison of Moen and Waste King internals
We have a Moen that hasn't given us any issues. It's surprisingly quiet as well.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on unjamming techniques
You need to unjam it from the top side with a wrench like this one.
There are disposal tools for unjamming from the top. You can also do it with almost anything long and sturdy enough to get down there.
Or a wooden dowel. You're not trying to save to the disposal.

Discussion about exclusive models
these are the ones I am looking at
there's a pretty good list covered [here](https://poolautobots.com/7-best-garbage-disposals-guide/) in a bit detail which might help make the decision.
If you’ve got a plug get it with the cord. Otherwise you’ll need to wire it yourself.
the insinkerator badger did last the longest, which was roughly 4 years, which is pretty decent considering it only had a 1 year warranty.
Costco's sales on garbage disposals
They frequently have disposals on sale. That's where I got my Moen.
General conversation about installation experiences
Follow the directions and it will be fine.
We love it and it is so so so quiet.
Discussion about compatibility between different brands
Different brand garbage disposal compatiblity? I'm trying to replace my broken Kitchen Aid garbage disposal with a Badger insinkerator.
Love it and comes with all the parts. Way cheaper and excellent quality compared to the badger/ insinkerator.
Discussion about garbage disposal compatibility
how do I pick a disposal that isn't GE (meaning, I can get it asap) but will work with where the pipes are and whatnot already under the sink?
If your current flange isn't rusted or otherwise deteriorated, they are universal.
They are all pretty similar.
Discussion about wiring and installation options
You could wire up the switch and outlet but not install the disposal.
Two words: air switch. You can skip the switch and as long as you put an outlet below the sink then a future owner can add a disposal and drill a hole on the counter for an air switch.
I love my air switch. My sink is on an island - so there's no wall on which to put a switch.
I have done this in many houses, even ones that currently have leach fields / septic systems because the odds are at some point they'll be hooked up to a sanitary sewer and can utilize the disposal.
Discussion on maintenance and usage of garbage disposals
Garbage disposal. Plumber’s opinion Just wondering what a plumbers general opinion on garbage disposals are.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about garbage disposal preferences
I'm looking for something that'll last.
Insinkerator all day.
So why not go big for an extra $20 lol.
The small one. The Badger I(1/3 hp). Unbelievably reliable.
Garbage disposal brand preferences
Also have a Moen that we've had since October-ish of 2019 (right after we moved into our new place) and it's been great so far.
Same. Amazon. Quiet. Inexpensive.
Discussion about garbage disposal brands
Another vote for Insinkerator evolution. Stainless steel grinder for long life
Moen 3/4 HP. Perfect! And you don't have to deal with rewiring!
General discussion about garbage disposals
will be close to identical to the GE you had.
Chews up anything and is very quiet.
Currently redoing a kitchen and will need to wire in a switch for it if I want one.
So thankful my previous owners did for us.
Garbage disposals can cause issues with drains if misused
Are garbage disposals bad? I've heard about how garbage disposals cause issues with drains and drain pipes and thus are not allowed in many locations.
Treat it like there's no garbage disposal (e.g. try not to get any food down there) and then if a little does go down, no big deal, run the disposal
It's better to compost food waste than to throw it down the drain. But if food does get down the drain it's better to run it through a garbage disposal.
They arent bad if used properly. People putting everything down them thinking “it gets chopped up” is when the problems start.
Discussion about waste disposal practices
Is this true about waste disposal?
Completely true. I've seen this myself. 10-12 times I got up from my seat and threw trash in the bin just to see at midnight these guys throw this bin outside from the door.
Yep I saw this too I thought of complaining too after recording a video but idk why i didnt. Will surely do it next time i see it.
The truth is there’s no provision made in terms of space in any train to carry trash to designated stations for disposal.
Discussion on environmental impact of disposals
That's a crock of bull imo.
Preference for composting over disposals
Definitely not...we have started composting all our non animal food scraps aside from eggs.
They're unnecessary for sure, like you say the food scraps would be better served going into a compost pile.
Mixed opinions on garbage disposals
but I just want a disposal system to be rid of that whole mess
I put one in my previous house that was on septic and had no issues.
