Snoop's Take

The Just-V 33'' Aluminum Universal Ski Roof Rack is designed to securely transport skis, snowboards, fishing rods, and more, making it an essential accessory for outdoor enthusiasts. With a large capacity and easy installation, it fits most vehicles equipped with crossbars, providing a convenient way to carry your gear without compromising on performance or safety. Positive feedback highlights the ease of installation and reliability, with users noting, "Rack comes on and off in less than 10 minutes" and praising its performance over time, like one user who stated, "Used rack for 6 years 0 issues 0 damage." However, some concerns were raised about road grime affecting skis and potential rust from moisture exposure, leading to a mixed sentiment regarding its protection capabilities. Overall, the Just-V Ski Roof Rack is recommended for its ease of use and reliability, but potential buyers should consider the trade-offs regarding gear protection and maintenance.

I don’t want anything over 200usd, and I was also somewhat interested in 686, Patagonia and picture, but if you guys have other suggestions let me know!

Positive Feedback

Still no bueno for the skis, the road salt and grime gets all up in the bindings.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Easy to install
I don’t want anything over 200usd, and I was also somewhat interested in 686, Patagonia and picture, but if you guys have other suggestions let me know!
Over the years in my 20s, I wound up fucking up the seal on my goggles, now in my late 30s, I can take care of stuff like this MUCH better.
Thule vs. Yakima Ski/Snowboard Mounts
done, 20 minutes well spent, thanks for the idea!!
Reliable performance over time
Used rack for 6 years 0 issues 0 damage
I've been using a ski track for 25+ years all over the north-east and the rockies. I've never had a problem with grime that I couldn't solve in 10 seconds with a dish towel when I got home.
Easy installation
I like how they look and perform.
Yes, you basically push the ski up in the bracket to the point you want to “hang it from” and that becomes the pinch point.
Reliable performance
they are the best ski racks I’ve used by far.
Cost-effective option compared to boxes
They’re pros and cons to both, so I could use some advice! Cheers.
Get a box. You spend a lot on your skis, don't expose them to road salt and moisture.
Easy to install and remove
Rack comes on and off in less than 10 minutes.
Works well enough for carrying gear
How bad are ski racks as opposed to cargo boxes, really? It seems everyone says that if you use a rack your board will be destroyed by rocks and road salt but I’m wondering how much this is the case.
Having said that, I have a rack on my car and it works well enough. I've never worried about road salt or chips caused by rocks because I don't baby my gear.
Easy to clean bindings with careful placement
I've been using a rack for decades and I've never had damage done to the board.
Convenience of easy loading/unloading
Ski racks are about convenience of easy loading/unloading, security to lock gear, and protect your cars finish.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Potential for road grime impacting skis
Still no bueno for the skis, the road salt and grime gets all up in the bindings.
This ☝️ it sucks getting to the mountain and taking your board/skis down and having them covered in shit from the road
I had a thule rack for two seasons but ditched it after having to clean nasty road grime out of the bindings and edges every time.
Concern about pressure on ski rockers
My only issue with the gravity grabber is the constant pressure on the nose rocker.
Hitch design is difficult to install/remove
the hitch design is a pain in the ass to install/remove and lock it due to limited space around the receiver
Hitch mount may not be suitable for winter conditions
I’ve always felt like a hitch mount rack and winter road salt spray would be a horrible combo.
Skis can get rusty from road salt and moisture exposure
my skis got rusty AF super quickly from the salt and moisture exposure.
Everything was rusted from the salt. A box will keep them protected.
Ski racks do not protect skis from road debris
Only one reason to use ski racks over a box, and that is cost.
Can get dirty from road grime
Took forever to fully clean.
Concerns about items flying off the rack
It happens. More common is people’s shit flying off because stuff broke(and they kept using the rack like “nah it’s gooood broooo”) or they didn’t tie it down right
Concerns about debris affecting bindings
My concern with ski racks is debris getting into my bindings and then the bindings not working correctly.
Potential to scratch car
You might be able to make it work, but you can scratch the car and you better be sure you have them tied down tightly or you could kill someone.
Risk of exposing skis to road salt and debris
Plus still chance: ski on freeway or car behind yours

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Humorous comments about ski care
You guys are pooping on your roof racks?!
Only if it’s less than 27°F outside, and sometimes when it’s exactly 37°F.
The smell keeps other cars from tailgating me
UV rays will degrade the plastic bases.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about DIY ski racks
Just make one for about 30 bucks and it is super easy.
great idea around drilling the racks!!
Discussion about ski storage options
Skis are best in the car if you have a hatchback, SUV or sedan with a ski pass through.
Discussion about alternatives to ski racks
I don't want to put our wet gear into the car.
Why dont you just get a thule goes on there easy

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion about protecting skis from road grime
Correct or incorrect, skis being clamped together has a serious advangage: the bases are not exposed and won't get shit on them.
You double your rack capacity.
Clamp them so there isn’t road grime on your bases, and try to make sure you take them off at night so they don’t rust.
There’s absolutely no downside to storing them in a way that minimizes exposing the bases to the elements.
Ski storage preferences and practices
I also face my ski’s front tips to the back. It probably doesn’t make much difference, but I just imagine them collecting stuff when I drive.
You got vampire skis or something?
Your top sheets are exposed to the sun all day every day and you don’t see them turning into dust??
Always skis clamped together and tips to the back.
Debate about ski care and protection
Are ski racks really that hard on your skis? I currently have a roof box but it’s non-trivial to put on and off and I can’t keep it on my car because I have covered parking both at home and work that I can’t clear if I have the box on.
It's overblown. People that worry about damage to their skis like that are either neurotic or have a super expensive quiver, maybe both.
Just don’t leave your skis in your racks when you’re not going back and forth to the mountain and it’ll be fine.
You really just have to give the skis a good wipe down when you get home to clean the road grime off of them.
Discussion about bibs versus pants for skiing
Would you all recommend bibs or regular ski pants and why? I’m sure this will be a pretty split argument but I’m curious as to each sides reasoning and what would be the best to purchase.
Always bibs! I HATE powder skirts with a burning passion, bibs keep snow from going down your pants and add an extra layer around your core if you get chilly.
Bibs keep you drier and warmer. Only drawback is that they make it super annoying to take a #2.
Curious what you mean by that - I’m a female skier in market to switch to a bib.
Experiences with ski gear maintenance
Fuck a rack. Keep it in your car.
Discussion about the ski rack vs cargo box debate
I am specifically looking for advice on the Thule Snowpack 4 vs. 6 vs. Extender racks since I seem to be most confused on what is the best out of those.
I am not aware of the ski rack vs cargo box debate.
Advice on protecting skis from sand and salt
If you’re going rack, you need to put your skis/boards in a bag to keep the sand and salt off them.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about ski theft experiences
super disappointed and hoping they turn up somehow.
Let us know if you get them back, hoping for your sake you will!
I’ve never left my gear unlocked since
I got them back because they posted them on Craigslist like 2 days later
Concerns about noise from roof racks
You don’t notice any noise. I followed this trick to reduce the noise to almost nothing.
Really annoyed by the whistling so I might just have to remove the bars when not in use.
Discussion about gas mileage impact from ski racks
that ski rack on the roof of your car lowers your gas mileage by 10-15%, especially in sedans.
I'd love to take my rack off but I don't know how...
to save $583 @10% and $4.889/gallon (CO average) at 28 mpg, you would need to drive 33.3k miles during those months.
Even with my Grand Cherokee that gets 18 MPG, I would only save about $109 a year to take off ski racks for 6 months a year.
Concerns about using ski racks in adverse weather conditions
Where I live it’s typically rainy/slushy down low and snowy a few hundred meters up.
