Additionally, many appreciate its low profile and secure attachment, although some have expressed concerns about compatibility with certain mounting systems and potential exposure to road debris. What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Easy installation with all necessary hardware included
Thule vs. Yakima Ski/Snowboard Mounts
Thule’s look better (opinion), mount easier, and come with all the hardware you need in the box instead of charging extra like Yakima for a part that’s out of stock often.
Good capacity for multiple boards and skis
The Fat Cat is slimmer and super quiet; I highly recommend it
If this fit on the crosstrek's rack, you could fit 6 snowboards!
Aerodynamic placement improves performance
Thule Ski/Snow rack Purchased a Thule Ski rack, went to throw my snowboard up there and it looks quite awkward.
It looks less awkward and is more aerodynamic if you put it the other way.
I second this. Currently use this configuration on my setup.
If you can’t fit both bindings between the rails on the rack because of a wider stance, slide the board back so it’s not just dragging in the wind.
Secure attachment for various items
You might consider an OEM set of crossbars (shop around online for Subaru bars), which provide a secure attachment to the roof rails.
Low profile design
I do love the low profile look of these and I already have a Yakima box to put on when I travel.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Compatibility limitations with certain mounting types
Lower-profile, still plenty of clearance for any ski/showboard I have.
Concern about equipment protection from road debris
I don’t ski or snowboard, but my initial concern would be getting road crud, gravel, or chemicals on my equipment.
Perceived size and aesthetic concerns
Too big and looks silly.
Salt damage concerns in certain climates
I have a ski rack in wisco and won't use it because of the salt.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Limited options for hitch ski carrying
Trailer hitch rack? Picked up a new car and would prefer to go with a hitch based system rather than roof rack (garage height), any suggestions?
While I'm sure some other people make dedicated options for this, we only have options from Thule and Yakima for hitch ski carrying.
General praise for aesthetics
Dang those look good. Butter than my normal ones.
Discussion about experiences with various rack brands
I use a trailer hitch rack for my bikes, I'd use it for a kayak and one of those roof top cargo box things.
Has served me well.
They're fabulous
General discussion about roof rack options
I’m not sure if I would go with some random rack from Amazon.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about storage options for ski and snowboard gear
Reading some older posts about grime being worse on tow hitch mounted ones but having a hard time justifying a roof only setup as we probably won't use the crossbars/box for anything else.
Nothing worse than having salt and grime hit your boards while you’re driving 70+ down the interstate.
I find it more aesthetically pleasing than just the clamps
The roof box is safer, much better protects my gear, and actually gets better gas mileage on my car (Volvo XC70) than with a rack.
Discussion about alternative storage options for ski/snowboard gear
Just curious, why don’t we store ski/snowboard in the trunk or gear tunnel?
Alternative transport methods (truck bed)
I’d just throw it in the bed of the truck
Discussion about transporting multiple snowboards
You could also probably fit some boots or other equipment in with the boards as well
Personally i don’t want to go through the hassle of removing bindings everytime, but your measurements and advice is much appreciated.
Discussion on alternative storage options
Are snowboard racks worth it? I've recently bought a yakima fresh track 4 rack and I am considering returning it.
Alternative methods for ski transportation discussed
Don't bother overpaying for the dumb specialized hitches. They are superbly overpriced.
ALTA RACKS builds racks that carry bikes, Ski, and snowboards.
Discussion about using cargo boxes for protection
Go with a cargo box.
I would echo the cargo box and it is worth the investment.
Discussion about alternative ski rack options
Gives you more versatility and also keeps all the road grime off your gear.
served us well on minivan for years as well as Outback OEM rack.
Discussion about alternative roof rack options
Seeking a recommendation on a roof rack for skis Subaru sells the Thule roof rack, but it's very expensive, at $380.
It is a much better way to go! it'll keep all the nasty road grime off of your skis and out of your bindings.
Check etrailer.com; they have extensive fitting advice and a cheaper house brand I used on a Prius for aero bars that were actually pretty good.
Getting cross bars for $380 isn't bad. (Doesn't make it cheap, but from Thule it'd be $500+).
Discussion about versatility of J-bars for different boats
If you're only planning to carry one boat and nothing else, then you don't need a J-rack.
That makes sense. Assuming your canoe is wider than your kayak, you could probably fit either of these rack types between the gunwales of your canoe, though with the cradle-style you wouldn't even need to flip anything down.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparisons with other storage options like cargo boxes
I carry my board, my wife's skis and my boys boards - it's just barely big enough to hold it all.
I have the Yakima skybox 16 in one of my cars and 4 boards fit in it easily.
Discussion about the need for crossbars to use the racks
I have Yakima racks on my 2014 and love them, but I've had them for years so I don't know about the price.
Mention of alternative ski/snowboard rack options
You should also check out the Otium SoftRack. Alternative to a Thule or Yakama, it is easily removable, fits any car, and can be used for a wide variety of equipment (skis, snowboards, kayaks, etc.)
Discussion about price differences between Thule and cheaper options
can anyone convince me Thule bars are worth 3x the price? rando amazon roof bars: $150
Worth every cent and if our Outback didn’t have the factory bars I would happily be putting Yakimas on again.
Also don't order them off Amazon, I ordered several and they were all damaged in one way or another.
I have the cheap ones you listed here from Amazon and they’re perfect for my snowboards.
Comments on price considerations for racks
Standard ski/snowboard racks are nice since they’re easier to remove and store than a cargo box.
Comments on the cost of alternative storage solutions
Maybe. The boxes look super expensive - wasn’t looking to spend that much.
Thule pulse series isn’t a ton more than you were looking at, plus you can use it to carry stuff other than just skis.
Discussion on alternatives to Thule racks
For skis/snowboards you can't go wrong with the OEM crossbars.
Discussion about cargo box compatibility
I have a Yakima skybox and the stuff in that isn't heavy but bulky.
Nice. Getting heavy things off the roof is a pain anyway.
Interest in hitch bike racks and awning setups
If not i will just do the tarp+suction cups+poles= awning setup.
Discussion about skiing costs and pass models
It's impossible to afford taking my kids now!
That's because they want you to buy an Epic or an Icon Pass.
Installation experiences and advice
I'm about to purchase the same on etrailer.com for the same reasons.
Installation is not difficult. Just follow the instructions carefully.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about the need for different mounting systems
I need J-bars for transporting my Kayak. Are they all the same? What should I look for or avoid?
For a single plastic short boat, my advice is skip the j-bars and just strap directly to the crossbars.
Experiences with other Thule products and their reliability
I have Thule crossbars on the roof of my VW Golf and Thule J bars to carry my kayak. I use the “Hull-a-port” model and have been perfectly happy with it.
Concerns about safety with cheap roof racks
Having been behind someone who lost a bicycle on the freeway and narrowly avoiding it I would hate to be the one to cause an accident.
Whatever is on your roof could hurt or kill someone if it flies off.
I’ve seen kayaks fly off of Amazon roof racks. Buy once, cry once.
