What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Percolator coffee is the best coffee for many users
My first time using a percolator to make coffee
Once we started using a perculator for coffee while we were camping we never went back. That's how we make coffee at home too. I'm our opinion perculator coffee is the best coffee.
Immersion Coffee Brewing Is Better Than Percolation (James Hoffman)
Percolator coffee is favored for its taste
My great grandmother's percolator still making coffee nearly 100 years later.
She used it damn near everyday until my grandpa died in 2008 and still breaks it out when someone who drinks coffee visits.
Both of my grandmothers had identical 50's percolators, and now I have one of them.
Percolators really are great, I think I am going to start using it more than my drip machine!
Percolator coffee is easy to clean with filters
Easy to clean if you use a filter, but if not a good swish of water cleans it out.
Percolators are favored for making coffee for larger groups
I'm generally making coffee for 5-12 people and the percolator seems to be the least amount of fuss.
Brewing coffee over campfire adds unique flavor
I've been using a version of this for camp coffee for years, it's best if you brew the coffee directly over the campfire coals.
Coffee can be adjusted for strength easily
we like strong coffee
Percolator makes great coffee when used correctly.
I still think the best coffee in the world is made using a percolator heated over a Coleman camping stove after freezing your ass off in a tent all night.
Unfortunately, using a percolator at home doesn't normally come close to recreating this experience.
Percolators are easy to use once you understand the process
Making coffee seems fool proof but I can’t figure it out.
Percolators work by boiling the liquid in the very bottom of the vessel, forcing water up the tube into the bulb and over the grounds.
Just keep it on the heat until it starts to percolate.
Let the water boil, then add the ground basket, lower the burner a bit.
Percolator coffee can be excellent when brewed correctly.
I made some for my sister, a coffee connoisseur and she said it's the best she's had.
Perc'd is where it's at. Old school is everything.
Coarse grind enhances coffee flavor and reduces bitterness.
Percolator coffee should be ground much more coarsely than drip coffee.
Coffee results are amazing with perfected process
I havr a faberware and its amazing. Will probably last 2 life times...I havr perfected my process and the results are amazing.
Enamel coffee pots have an appealing look
I like the look of the enamel ones.
Percolator coffee can be enjoyable when brewed correctly
I agree that percolator coffee can be good.
Perco is definitely underrated.
Percolators are easy to use and hard to mess up
My problem comes with the warming up and brewing time.
A percolator recirculates brew through your grounds several times, and at a comparatively high (and rising) temperature, so over extraction is always going to be a major risk.
Nostalgic taste associated with percolator coffee
I have a beat up old metal Perc that was my daily use before I went to 'better methods'. Now I keep it for camping and I still enjoy the 'nostalgia' taste you are talking about.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Percolators can produce bitter coffee if brewed incorrectly.
They put the water through the coffee at boiling temp (bad) and then continue to boil the brewed coffee (even worse) and brew for to long (You either get watery coffee or over extracted coffee).
Modern percolators have inferior designs compared to older models.
I brew coffee in mine on low heat without ever getting to boiling thanks to the superior design.
Coarse grind may lead to bitterness
Agreed.. i think it should be finer.
That's as course as it gets.
Glass knob is easy to lose
Do not lose the glass knob or you will be an unhappy camper in the morning.
Percolators can produce burnt and bitter coffee.
Percolators are one of the worst methods of making coffee for a variety of reasons but notably the overheat and over extract things.
In my experience, percolators over extract and overheat coffee producing some of the worst coffee I've ever tried.
Percolators may not produce the best coffee compared to modern machines
Yeah percolators went out of style for a reason, the cheapest Mr coffee drip machine will make much better coffee, but they do work.
Percolators can produce burnt coffee if brewed improperly.
because the brewed coffee is being recirculated through the beans again under constant boiling temperature causing it to get burnt
the problem, as I see it, is that you recirculate the coffee already brewed under a consistent boiling temperature, causing it to get burnt
I noticed what you mention about the brewed coffee passing through the grounds repeatedly. I am not impressed.
Difficulty in controlling temperature can lead to poor brewing results.
You really have no choice unless you want to clean up a huge mess after the boil over. That's a disaster.
Percolators are considered inferior to modern coffee makers
They're like typewriters: Quaint, but absolutely rubbish, and should only be used by historians as an example of how terrible they are.
You could leave it longer, but honestly, you need more juice for a percolator.
Difficulty in achieving the right brewing temperature
Just under a boil is the best, you want the liquid to hit the top of the percolator every second or two.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Nostalgia for percolators among older generations
I have heard A LOT of old white people say stuff like "man, I miss my percolator."
Percolators were also common for households because they were often used on a burner on the stove or set on top of the woodstove.
Percolators used historically for camping and home brewing
I have always liked that style of making coffee the best.
Cultural differences in naming coffee makers
Unless you're in a country that calls a thing that percolates a percolator.
We all call them percolators.
The only person i know who even says percolating in normal speech is E-40
Interest in vintage percolators and designs from the early 1900s.
Thank you for the information. It guided my purchase decision.
I love the coffee shops coffee, but from what I’ve read on those, don’t think that is going to be in my budget
Discussions about coffee quality and types suitable for percolators.
The aroma that fills the house when a percolator is bubbling? It is a good part of the taste being boiled off.
Percolators have historical significance in coffee brewing
It’s time for the percolator

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about alternatives to percolators like French presses and Aeropress
Does it have to be a percolator? For single coffees I use an aeropress and for a larger group, a French press
Coleman makes a coffee pot that runs on the green propane canisters. That might work for you
An Aeropress would work for multiple people. Once the water is hot it's just about a minute or less to make each cup. IMHO much better than perk (or even French press).

Discussion about percolators and their historical use
Who still percolates their coffee?
Very rare. The only time I ever use one is when I go out to my family’s fishing cabin in Canada and use the 50 year old percolator that has been up there in the cabin since before I was born.
Using a thermos mug keeps coffee hot longer than aluminum cups
Useful tip: use a thermos mug instead of those aluminum camp cups.
Yeah it does lose heat pretty fast.
Discussions about grind size for optimal brewing
That is one hell of a coarse grind.
Discussion about the brewing technique and timing
I bring the water to a boil and then put the guts in and turn the heat down low.
Discussion on grind size for optimal brewing.
That’s literally how to grind for a percolator.
Percolators are not commonly used anymore
Coffee Percolators I found this video discussing how percolators work, and why they aren't really used anymore.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Misunderstanding between percolators and drip coffee machines
Way too many people here are confusing percolators and drip coffee machines.
It’s also confusing because drip and pourover undergo the percolation process in brewing.
Nostalgia for percolators among different generations.
Hi, do you know of a percolator which is on the market that is based on the older design?
My parents used to have one; I was fascinated as a kid watching this.
Same here. Parents used it for decades
My Dad still uses these to make coffee. I’m convinced he has burnt off all his taste buds.
Nostalgia for percolators among different generations
He is such a weirdo but a weirdo that matches with my own bizarre love for random old equipment and such.
General sentiment that any coffee is better than none.
Any coffee is better than no coffee.
Nostalgia for percolators among users
I think it's awesome.
