First world problems. Doing dishes by hand, the horror! I just can't 🤣

Positive Feedback

I think a bread machine used on the dough only setting is better in this scenario than a stand mixer IME.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
High performance motor
First world problems. Doing dishes by hand, the horror! I just can't 🤣
Does my stand mixer need repair? It gets smoking hot and smells like the motor is burning on the #3 setting with bread dough
And with roughly half a kilo of flour, ~20 minutes of mixing it can get really hot.
Occasionally, the stand mixer head may feel warm, and you may not be able to touch it comfortably. This is normal.
Versatile attachments
I peel stuff, shred stuff, cut stuff, spiralize zuchinni, make pasta, etc.
Good for heavy doughs
I shred chicken with mine quite often. Just throw the chicken in with the paddle attachment and let it do its magic.
Makes baking easier and less intensive
how many times a year would you have to use a stand mixer to justify its purchase?
it makes the process MUCH easier and less intensive.
I recently won a [6qt bowl-lift stand mixer](http://i.imgur.com/HCkNidD.jpg) in a work raffle and have no idea what I can use it for.
Just about anything you can buy in a bakery is easier to make with a stand mixer (cookies, cakes, bread, etc).
Useful for various cooking tasks beyond baking
Lots of stuff I would have had to do by hand my mixer makes short work of.
Encourages more frequent baking
I have also lucked out that every apartment I’ve rented since buying it had high enough cabinets for it to be out at all times, which helps me be inspired to use it.
Encourages frequent baking
My kitchen aid has been used many times a week for 11 years and going strong.
If my kitchen aid stand mixer died today I’d buy another one before the day was out.

Where it needs some work!

Motor can overheat on high settings
I think a bread machine used on the dough only setting is better in this scenario than a stand mixer IME.
Heavy and takes up space
I’d be happy without it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Concerns about materials used for mixing dough
I’ve been told you can’t use metal for the sourdough process. Would that include mixing it in a metal bowl?
I've made thousands of loaves in steel bowls. Absolutely no issues.
Copper or aluminum can be problematic. Steel is what you want.
Works fine.
Attachment usefulness debated
Which attachments do you like?
The meat grinder is the best, as is the pasta maker!!!!! Life changing!!!
I’ll second the meat grinder suggestion. It’s hard to go back to packaged ground beef...
I have the meat grinder, the pasta attachments, and the shredder attachments. Love them and use them all a lot.
Preference for different beater types
While the mixer's running and mixing, I spoon flour into it and it sifts right into the bowl.
Insights on mixer calibration
If you are using the paddle with the scraper and it's not scraping your bowl your mixer needs to be calibrated.
Discussion about motor torque and performance for dough
The DC motor versions can handle doughs much better because the motor has more torque.
General excitement about baking with a mixer
Wow this is very exciting, I absolutely love bread and would love to make my own!

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Different methods for baking bread discussed
Why all the fuss over complex techniques when a does a great job.
No-knead approach made bread accessible for anyone that did not want to spend $300+ on a mixer, and became popular.
The liveliness of the starter and the non-flour ingredients make a much bigger difference in rise and fluffiness of the loaf.
you have to be on speed 2 or lower and give the machine breaks after so many minutes unless it's an (even more) commercial grade machine.
Different uses of stand mixer
I inherited a stand mixer and feel very lucky to have it, but I really only use it for baking which isn’t very often.
Meat grinder is awesome! I just bought the pasta attachment so we will see how that goes.
Discussion about scraping bowl with attachments
I find that I need to stop it every 20 seconds to scrape the attachment (paddle with the scraper on it) as well as the sides of the bowl.
You do need to occasionally stop and scrape the bowl and beaters.
You should be stopping to scrape your bowl with a hand mixer also.
Discussion about making bread with a stand mixer
the dough hook attachment will do all that work for you.
Kneading by hand is very sticky..

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Questions about mixing times and techniques
Newbie question: would I need to adjust the amount of time mixing with the stand mixer if I use any proportion of whole grain?
I don’t understand why this got downvoted? It’s a legit question.
Discussion about dishwashers and hand washing
I highly doubt it uses far less water than that.
Modern dishwashers actually use less water than washing by hand.
Discussion on proper mixing speeds for dough
The dough hook should never be used above setting 2 or it can burn out your motor.
Heat and smell indicate it’s working too hard, not that it’s broken (yet).
Considerations for gifting a stand mixer
My budget can't stretch over the $150 mark.
The 4qt versions from the 1990s or before are built like brick shithouses with all metal gears.
If it's heavy doughs like bread you'll likely need a more expensive one with a better engine.
The other nice thing about Kitchenaids is that when they do break, they can be fixed.
Discussion about affordability of stand mixers
Best affordable stand mixer? I want a stand mixer, but those famous KitchenAid ones cost HUNDREDS of dollars.
If you watch for a sale, you can get a kitchenaid for a decent price. You’re buying a kitchen power tool that should last most of your life.
Still using one I bought in 1989. A less expensive mixer wouldn’t last half as long.
I bought my KitchenAid at one of those discount HomeGoods/Tuesday Morning stores and it was such an unbelievable bargain.
Discussion about the frequency of use to justify purchase
I use it once or twice a month and it’s usually just hanging out on the shelf.
Discussion on choosing between stand mixers and hand mixers
Bought myself a baking book called "Sweet Tooth" by Sarah Fennel and she recommended the kitchenaid stand mixer, but I can't afford that, especially since l'm just starting out.
Oo wait you are just starting then hand mixers are just fine to get too, you can always knead dough by hand when needed so don't worry mate
If you can afford both and are willing to spend the money, absolutely go with a stand mixer
If you have the space for it and don't want to hold a mixer, get a stand mixer. I never use my hand mixer anymore after getting one. If you have limited space and lots of energy, get a hand mixer.
Debate over necessity for casual bakers
I love my Kitchen Aid and wouldn't be without it but I bake a lot and it's used often in my home.
Learning curve with stand mixers
It sounds like you are new to using a stand mixer, and it takes time to learn how to use one with ease.
Comparison of different mixer designs
A hand mixer is fine for a small batch of toll house but cannot touch a stand mixer in convenience overall, nor does it have much power for dense or large batches.
Discussion about mixing methods and techniques
Does the Kitchenaid bread bowl work with a bowl lift mixer? I got one on final closeout at BBB.
No it doesn't, sorry. It lacks the ears on the side to mount in a bowl lift.
Couldn't you mix it in the regular bowl and then transfer to the baking bowl?
So I purchased a 6 qt enameled dutch oven and am planning to return the bread bowl.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Personal stories of gifting mixers
I use mine at least 1 time a week. At least.
Concerns about durability of mixers
It’s good to hear how long you’ve had yours.
General satisfaction with using mixers
It's easier than putting into the bowl by hand. I love mine, use it constantly.
Concerns about limitations of hand mixers for bread dough
Unless some of the high end mixer I see, $100+, AND you can hold on to it, I don't see any of them doing anything like remotely working with bread dough.
Even on speed 2, a 5 cup dough will thrash pretty hard.
It has a size limit however that you have to factor in and also likes more wet dough.
Works better than my stand mixer in my opinion.
