What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Dough hook optimal speed is 2
No idea how to even use this or which kind it even is.
the dough hook should only be used on speed 2.
I have been using mine for around 23 years and I make bread a couple of times a week. I have never felt the need to go higher than 2.
I do hear the motor straining a little at the higher speeds.
Stainless steel bowl is durable and functional
The white coated paddles and bowl can go in the dishwasher, but (as others have mentioned) the wire whisk should be hand washed.
Great for mixing large batches
The dough hook is for yeast doughs and shouldn't be used faster than speed 2.
Effective for various tasks
It's by design. The dough hook torque is extremely hard on the motor at higher speeds, plus it can overwork and overheat the dough, and also it can cause the mixer to "walk" off the counter.
Good mixer for general use
It’s a good mixer, but it’s worth noting that it’s a 5 quart bowl lift, and it’s not a particularly high wattage.
Attractive design
God I love the look of those with their little arms.
Product has good longevity with proper use
Our kitchen aid like this just turned 9 i think still holding strong hopefully for a little longer too.
If you use it properly, it should last a long time.
Attractive design elements
NICE!! At first I didn't think I was going to like the glitter paint, but after that clear, WOW! That really made it pop.
After seeing that gearbox I can understand why these sell for such a high price. That's impressive craftsmanship.
Long-lasting performance
the oil problem never caused any issues with use!
it needs to be re-greased which isn’t too complicated.
Attractive color options
Got the same one a few weeks ago!
The color is Ice Blue.
Sturdy construction for heavy mixing tasks
I really like mine. If you keep an eye out for sales sometimes they’re quite discounted.
They are worth it if it's going to be one of your main tools in the kitchen.
Effective for baking cakes and cookies
I mostly do cakes and cookies, so my Kitchenaid works fine.
yes, agreed. Kitchen aid for cakes and cookies, Bosch for bread
Efficient for large batch mixing
I actually wanna sell mine and get the lift bowl so I can do more bread.
Effective for whipping cream
Amd whipped cream is so much easier.
Tilt-head design is user-friendly
I bought the bowl lift and ended up selling it and getting an Artisan tilt head for the reasons mentioned above and because the bowl was too big for smaller things like whipping just a couple of egg whites.
Easy to use with multiple attachments
I found mine was easier to use and had more attachments available versus other brands of stand mixer.
Durable and long-lasting performance
it does things faster and, many times, better than by hand or hand mixer.
It's only something that requires a quick fix as well.
Handles tasks better than hand mixing
They handle the jobs I can't do by hand. Also pretty.
Powerful and effective motor
I never thought about using mine to churn icecream, and I think you might've just changed my life for the better!
Durable older models
Never a problem.
It's never missed a beat, or had to be repaired in any way.
I have no idea what's inside it, but it still works.
Good for light mixing tasks
I've been making no-knead bread a little for the past month or two so I just use the KA to bring the initial mix together.
Effective for home baking
Mine is 20 years old and still works fine.
Easy to repair
It sounds like the worm gear failed in which case it's a very easy thing to fix.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Attachments not dishwasher safe
Don't put that whisk or any other attachments with aluminum hubs in the dishwasher!!!
Thanks!! I ended up watching some videos on it and it seems like Bar Keepers Friend is a better choice, as the abrasive pads can leave scratches behind.
Don't put the attachments in the dishwasher, hand wash only.
Mixer can stall on high speeds
Mine will stall if I mix dough on speed two.
Limited warranty period
Most of their mixers have a 1 year warranty. Seems crummy that a company known for quality won't stand behind their products in a meaningful way.
Motor can fail if used improperly
Wearing out after normal use is not a defect.
Expensive price point
I just want one so badly but it’s so expensive here.
Not ideal for heavy-duty bread making
Definitely if you buy second hand. Not so much if you buy new.
I burnt my three year old 4.5 qt stand mixer out making bread.
Not suitable for long mixing times
Also here to ask if you really want to use a mixer. I make sourdough and none of my recipes called for a mixer.
Stretch and fold!!! Once you get the hang of it, you’ll like it more than kneading commercial yeast.
I have the classic. I use it for doughs all the time, it’s plenty strong, even for large batches.
Not a necessity for small batch cooking
A stand mixer is almost never required for small batch home cooking.
Concerns about planned obsolescence
I was thinking of buying one assuming that they last decades when taken care of.
It's a shame they didn't design this machine better..maybe adding a cotter pin to fix the issue..I will not buy another.
Motor overheating issues
And yet I have a KA from the same generation as you and a standard 3 cup flour mixture and the motor gets hot and smokes a bit.
Concerns about plastic gear durability
what is your take on this? I am a novice baker at best and wanted to put a mixer on my wedding registry.
This was quite common. People had to then go buy a brand new one. Ouch! Now it’s just going to strip the plastic gear.
The switch to all metal gears is probably going to lead to more expensive repairs.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Variability in mixer power across models
Some Tilt-head mixers are more powerful than some bowl-lift models.
Variety of experiences with the mixer
Are kitchenaid stand mixers worth it? I’ve always wanted a kitchenaid for casual use (like making cakes cookies bread etc) but the price point always stops me.
Discussion about DC motors in KitchenAid mixers
Most posts seem to be about a year old here.
The only available brand new Kitchenaid being sold in the USA that has DC motor is the commercial 8qt bowl-lift NSF certified mixer.
I did this research before buying mine and (if I remember correctly) only the mini classic (3qt?) and 7qt Pro had the DC motors.
The DC motors are often fetishized and are highly sought after, but what kind of juice turns the motor is pretty much irrelevant when it comes to whether the mixer is capable of doing the work.
Discussion about different attachments
I really wanna buy the ice cream attachment 😍
I have ice cream attachment which I love.
Discussion about different gear materials
Nylon is a *type* of plastic, just like aluminum, brass, steel, and titanium are types of metal.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Community tips and advice shared
Is this true for the tilt head as well?
Yup! I actually read the manual and it says run on speed 2 only.
Experiences with repairing older KitchenAid mixers
The actual steps of regreasing are not hard. Take apart cover case, clean out old grease, replace with new grease, and reassemble.
Yes. The grease is fine if it isn’t leaking.
Do you only have to get the grease replaced if it’s leaking? I found one on the curb the other day that was working perfectly but didn’t know if it needs some kind of “tune up” of sorts.
I got a red one for like $70 years ago from a Texas thrift.
Community insights on mixing techniques
Now. I. Just. Add the chips. Add the chips. Add the chips.
you wouldn't be able to drive the motor straight from the raspberry pi. You could build a box for the pi perhaps...

Different cleaning methods discussed
Bar Keeper's Friend is a better choice for this situation.
BKF + a warm scrub daddy 🤷🏼‍♀️ not a big deal, just had to scrub in the same direction.
Many available at thrift shops
Geez how many of these are at thrift shops and why (since they are so awesome)
Discussion about cleaning the mixer
It'll last for years at this point
the grease was food safe when it was installed, so it probably wasn't that much of a bio-hazard as the title suggests.
I love looking at it on my countertop every day and thinking of my dad.
I’ve been thinking about doing this for a long time.
Replacement parts availability
Where’d you get the replacement silver band around it?
They’re not stickers, but they can be removed and replaced.
Discussion on secondhand purchases
I'm just a hobby baker but I love mine.
People have varying preferences between tilt-head and bowl-lift mixers
I much prefer the bowl lift. The head tilt one I found was much smaller in comparison and made more of a mess.
Comparison between Classic and Artisan models
Is the classic strong enough for sourdough, or should we go ahead and spend the extra $100 and get the Artisan?
You will end up doing more work having to clean the mixer after.
Discussion about longevity of older models
They are one of the few things you can buy these days that are meant to be user serviceable.
Debate on tilt-head vs. bowl-lift mixers
Looking to buy a (KitchenAid) stand-mixer. Would you recommend head tilt or bowl lift? Why?
Comparisons to other mixers
it's been the best thing ever. The design is so different to a cheap one that I'm rarely having to scrape bowls to make sure everything gets incorporated and it handles bread dough like a trooper.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
User experience varies widely
Wait wait wait can you explain a green pad?? My bf put one of my cake pans AND a jelly roll sheet into the dishwasher and I want so badly to restore them!!
why is this? I have always used the dough hook for breads, and just let er rip. max power.
Comments on mixer longevity
Well my mom has one too and the bowl is just fine after 15 years
Discussion on KitchenAid donations and thrift finds
I can’t believe I found a KitchenAid stand mixer at Goodwill. $50, and it was even in the color I wanted!
Who donates a KitchenAid mixer? Good find!
When someone has used it for a long time and decide to upgrade to a newer model or color that matches a new kitchen.
Our old kitchen aid started skipping gears and sometimes had a grinding noise. It still worked but not smoothly.
Discussion on repairability and parts availability
This. This is my spirit animal. Oh. My. God.
Variety of user experiences and opinions
The only thing it's been good at is whipping cream.
My sunbeam is going on 15 years. I’m praying for that damn thing to die so I can justify a KA 😩😂
Different opinions on necessity and effectiveness
My grandmother has a Hamilton beach one and she loves it, I believe she bought it for 1/4 the price of a kitchen aid.
User experiences vary widely
I personally recommend the artisan, it has good power and bowl size but can still be stored away for when you want your counter space back.
Variety of user experiences with longevity
We've had it for as long as I can remember (into the mid nineties, at least), and as far as I know we've never brought it in to be repaired.
A little of both. Anything made of any material will break over long repeated wear, even if it is designed for that particular kind of wear.
Community advice on repairs
Look at the schematic for the gear box, then cntrl + F for Worm Gear.
