If you use it properly, it should last a long time.

I have a KitchenAid that is about 25 years old where the majority of its load is mixing dough. Never a problem.
My mom is using one that she got as a wedding gift back in the 70s. It's never missed a beat, or had to be repaired in any way.

most refurbs are indistinguishable from new and if they were serviced, they were serviced at the KitchenAid factory.
If refurbished by KitchenAid they are the same as new, except they come with a 6 month warranty instead of one year.

Don't put the attachments in the dishwasher, hand wash only.
Motor can stall if used at high speeds with dough hook.
Mine will stall if I mix dough on speed two.
It's by design. The dough hook torque is extremely hard on the motor at higher speeds, plus it can overwork and overheat the dough, and also it can cause the mixer to "walk" off the counter.
Not a particularly high wattage for heavy-duty mixing
It’s a good mixer, but it’s worth noting that it’s a 5 quart bowl lift, and it’s not a particularly high wattage.
Limited warranty coverage
Most of their mixers have a 1 year warranty. Seems crummy that a company known for quality won't stand behind their products in a meaningful way.
In most, not all, the warranty is against defects. Wearing out after normal use is not a defect.

Neither mixers are “bread mixers” so to speak. I also wouldn’t use them to make pasta dough, they just don’t handle long mixing times well.

Lift models are better for heavy dough than tilt head models.
The lift model Pro series will be better if doing doughs over the tilt head Artisan due to the fixed place motor that is also more powerful.
Repairs may be needed even with light duty use.
Refurbished units fix the easily broken parts, and are tested.

The only available brand new Kitchenaid being sold in the USA that has DC motor is the commercial 8qt bowl-lift NSF certified mixer.
I did this research before buying mine and (if I remember correctly) only the mini classic (3qt?) and 7qt Pro had the DC motors.
The DC motors are often fetishized and are highly sought after, but what kind of juice turns the motor is pretty much irrelevant when it comes to whether the mixer is capable of doing the work.

Back in the day, all mixers were commercial (too expensive for home use) and they were made by a company called Hobart.
Many people buy mixers but rarely use them.
