What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Powerful mixing with speed control
I have never felt the need to go higher than 2. 1 sometimes feels like it’s not enough, 2 is perfect for the job.
I do hear the motor straining a little at the higher speeds.
Large capacity for baking
Definitely read the manual. Good information in there!!
Durable attachments
I’ve owned that mixer at least 45 years and have put all attachments in the dishwasher and this thing works as good as the day I got it.
Durable and long-lasting mixer
It'll last for years at this point
I love looking at it on my countertop every day and thinking of my dad.
Well my mom has one too and the bowl is just fine after 15 years
Durability and longevity of the mixer
still holding strong hopefully for a little longer too.
If you use it properly, it should last a long time.
The oil problem never caused any issues with use!
these mixers will go forever and just need a bit of maintenance every so often.
Powerful mixing capabilities
You just have to look at the dent in OP's mixer to see the kind of power you'll dealing with.
FFFFFFFFFFACTS. I ALMOST WEPT WHEN I REALIZED THE MAGIC OF THE KITCHENAID MIXER AND REALIZING HOW MANY YEARS I HAD WASTED DOING ALL OF THAT STUFF BY HAND OMG
High-quality craftsmanship
That's impressive craftsmanship.
Sturdy for heavy mixing tasks
I really like mine. If you keep an eye out for sales sometimes they’re quite discounted.
It's insulting to sell a $400+ mixer and put a warning on it that you shouldn't use it for bread dough.
Good for cakes and cookies
My friend makes a lot of bread so she had to go for a heavier duty Bosch.
yes, agreed. Kitchen aid for cakes and cookies, Bosch for bread
I'm just a hobby baker but I love mine. On sale its not that bad, still expensive but so worth it
Worth the investment when used frequently
They are worth it if it's going to be one of your main tools in the kitchen.
Good for making frosting and elaborate recipes
I'm able to make so many things so much more efficiently than before.
Powerful motor handles double batches easily
it does an excellent job!
Bowl-lift design provides stability
I much prefer the bowl lift. The head tilt one I found was much smaller in comparison and made more of a mess.
More attachments available than other brands
I found mine was easier to use and had more attachments available versus other brands of stand mixer.
Durable and long-lasting brand
it does things faster and, many times, better than by hand or hand mixer.
It's only something that requires a quick fix as well.
Handles tasks that can't be done by hand
They handle the jobs I can't do by hand. Also pretty.
Good for making ice cream
I never thought about using mine to churn icecream, and I think you might've just changed my life for the better!
Durability of older models
Never a problem.
It's never missed a beat, or had to be repaired in any way.
Substantially better performance compared to Artisan
It’s SUBSTANTIALLY better IMHO.
Good for various baking tasks
We just got a 5.5qt. lift for $249.99
Recommended bowl-lift design for stability
The Pro 5 Plus (KV25 model type) is an older design. Intrinsically it's pretty noisy, and some folks find this objectionable.
High quality and durability of mixer
It's been my baby and my pride and joy. I ADORE IT.
I like it and don't think it's a problem at all to raise and lower the bowl.
Metal parts enhance durability
My only complaints are that I hate the guard and it's kind of a pain to put on or take of the mixing attachments compared to the swing top ones.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Dough hook should only be used at low speed
Enjoy! The main thing I see folks not knowing is that the dough hook should only be used on speed 2.
Low wattage in some models
It’s a good mixer, but it’s worth noting that it’s a 5 quart bowl lift, and it’s not a particularly high wattage.
Short warranty period
Most of their mixers have a 1 year warranty. Seems crummy that a company known for quality won't stand behind their products in a meaningful way.
Potential for motor failure
Components will fail.
Putting in a Pi doesn't really help with anything.
Heavy and requires space
Get the mixer.
Newer models may be flimsier
the newer one is far flimsier. It shakes with a moderately stiff dough (I was making a spice cookie, similar in texture to gingerbread).
Bowl-lift mechanism can be cumbersome
I just think the bowl-lift mechanism is a PITA when you need to change attachments, because you have to put the bowl on first and if I have a full mixing bowl then I always end up making a huge mess.
I bought the bowl lift and ended up selling it and getting an Artisan tilt head for the reasons mentioned above and because the bowl was too big for smaller things like whipping just a couple of egg whites.
Not suitable for long mixing times
neither mixers are “bread mixers” so to speak. I also wouldn’t use them to make pasta dough, they just don’t handle long mixing times well.
Also here to ask if you really want to use a mixer. I make sourdough and none of my recipes called for a mixer.
I have the classic. I use it for doughs all the time, it’s plenty strong, even for large batches. But I’d never use it for sourdough?
Concerns about quality and durability
Stretch and fold!!! Once you get the hang of it, you’ll like it more than kneading commercial yeast.
Not necessary for small batch cooking
A stand mixer is almost never required for small batch home cooking.
Concerns about planned obsolescence
I'm afraid that they started to implement planned obsolescence, it's a general concern in everything in these days.
Potential issues with heavy use
I think even 10-15 years is pretty good for something people use every day.
Takes up significant counter space
The 5.5 quart stand mixer barely fits under the cabinets on the counter.
Inconsistent compatibility information
that it would fit Costco's KSM60 model, but the "Combi-Whip" scrapes the bottom of the 3-quart bowl even with the bowl clearance adjusted.
Seems like a staff training and webpage cleanup is needed.
I think that the attachment and bowl are not engineered to fit together properly.
I do find it really weird why KA doesn’t consider expanding the bowl clearance range so customers can interchangeably use bowls based on tilt-head or bowl-lift.
Cumbersome bowl-lift mechanism
I got a model that tilts amd have been loving it for over 20 years! 🙂👍🏼
High price in the UK market
Save some money and buy a Kenwood.
If I had to buy from scratch in the UK I'd probably look at the Kenwood.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Comments on the aesthetic appeal of the mixer
God I love the look of those with their little arms.
They really are beautiful, aren't they? Much better than an AH ex, lol.
Thoughts on replacement parts
They’re not stickers, but they can be removed and replaced.
Discussion on repairability and parts availability
What is my purpose?
This blender can be used to do a lot of food, fruit can stir it?
Discussion about DC motors in mixers
Most posts seem to be about a year old here.
The only available brand new Kitchenaid being sold in the USA that has DC motor is the commercial 8qt bowl-lift NSF certified mixer.
I did this research before buying mine and (if I remember correctly) only the mini classic (3qt?) and 7qt Pro had the DC motors.
The DC motors are often fetishized and are highly sought after, but what kind of juice turns the motor is pretty much irrelevant when it comes to whether the mixer is capable of doing the work.
Discussion on preferences between bowl-lift and tilt-head mixers
Thank you, this is something to think about! The extra power of the bowl lift is great but maybe there are trade-offs.
Discussion about the history of gear materials
Heh, funny. I've been making no-knead bread a little for the past month or two so I just use the KA to bring the initial mix together (about 15 seconds of mixing a very wet dough), but I was considering pulling out the dough hook and trying something that takes less time...
I have a kitchenaid stand mixer that my parents gave me. We've had it for as long as I can remember (into the mid nineties, at least), and as far as i know we've never brought it in to be repaired.
A little of both. Anything made of any material will break over long repeated wear, even if it is designed for that particular kind of wear.
Comparison of bowl-lift vs Artisan models
More color choices. All the fancy bowls. The bread bowl.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Tips for using and maintaining the mixer
Why didn’t I google if there was a fix sooner? I have no idea.
BKF + a warm scrub daddy 🤷🏼‍♀️ not a big deal, just had to scrub in the same direction.
And I bought an after-market paddle attachment that has a rubber coating so it reaches all the way to the bottom of the bowl.
Discussion on variety and availability of models
Geez how many of these are at thrift shops and why (since they are so awesome)
Heh. I just wanted people to be aware of the range of models that are available.
Discussion on cleaning and maintenance
Where’d you get the replacement silver band around it?
I’ve had mine for 20 years and it looks like the one on the left.
Did you take it apart??? I'm dying to properly clean my rescue mixer's guts but I'm scared to take it apart much
Discussion on finding KitchenAid mixers at thrift stores
I can’t believe I found a KitchenAid stand mixer at Goodwill. $50, and it was even in the color I wanted!
Who donates a KitchenAid mixer? Good find!
When someone has used it for a long time and decide to upgrade to a newer model or color that matches a new kitchen.
Our old kitchen aid started skipping gears and sometimes had a grinding noise. It still worked but not smoothly.
Commentary on the maintenance of older mixers
The actual steps of regreasing are not hard. Take apart cover case, clean out old grease, replace with new grease, and reassemble.
Yes. The grease is fine if it isn’t leaking.
I got a red one for like $70 years ago from a Texas thrift.
Maybe they got it as a gift recently... you know people love to do what they love to do right up to the last second.
Mention of Black Friday sales influencing purchase decisions
I hope to be using the stand mixer next week instead of going out to the store.
Discussion about comparing the Classic and Artisan models
Is the classic strong enough for sourdough, or should we go ahead and spend the extra $100 and get the Artisan?
Comparison with Hamilton Beach and other brands
What’s the hype over kitchen aid stand mixers? I’m curious why they are so sought after for the home baker.
Comparison between bowl-lift and tilt-head mixers
Looking to buy a (KitchenAid) stand-mixer. Would you recommend head tilt or bowl lift? Why? Thanks in advance!
I personally recommend the artisan, it has good power and bowl size but can still be stored away for when you want your counter space back.
Discussion on storage space for mixers
I keep mine on the counter and it isn’t an issue for me.
Discussion about the value of stand mixers
Why are stand mixers so expensive? Isn't it just a mixing bowl with electric beaters attached?
Advice on identifying old vs. new gear types
Quick question. As the replacement is recent, do you know of any way of identifying the difference between the old and the new types?
Look at the schematic for the gear box, then cntrl + F for Worm Gear. Pull up the picture and if it's yellow it's a fiber gear, else metal.
General tips for mixer maintenance
The motor seems to be fine - when I plug it in and turn it on, it makes all the appropriate sound/vibration.
Understanding bowl options for specific KitchenAid mixers
The higher capacity is achieved by increasing the height of the bowl above the bowl support tabs.
Discussion on mixer model compatibility with accessories
I just bought it for my KSM60 and it works just fine.
Differences between mixer models
Only difference is the Artisan weighs 13.1kg and the Heavy Duty 13.5kg.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on mixer longevity and usage
why is this? I have always used the dough hook for breads, and just let er rip. max power.
I went straight for the lift a couple years ago. I bought refurbished from kitchen aid, certified. I love it.
Comments on the grease used in older mixers
It makes the before photo look much worse than it is.
General thoughts on KitchenAid products
then an engineer from kitchen aid chimed in that the plastic gears are actually better because they are cheap and easy to replace and wont burn out the motor if you overload the mixer.
Reference to America's Test Kitchen review
Many dough recipes call for longer kneading times (and higher speeds). While we didn’t experience problems kneading longer in this testing, KitchenAid says that exceeding these speed and time limits will damage the mixer and void the warranty.
Comments on the longevity of KitchenAid mixers
They're no joke.
I swear it's built better than my car.
