Snoop's Take

The Mountain House Adventure Weekender Kit is a carefully curated selection of freeze-dried meals designed for camping and backpacking enthusiasts. With 12 servings included, it promises convenience and great taste in outdoor settings. Consumer sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the "amazing taste" of the meals and highlighting favorites like the "biscuits and sausage gravy." Users appreciate the convenience these meals offer, especially in outdoor conditions, stating that "a cup of hot water can get me a well deserved meal." However, some concerns have been raised about the rising prices and portion sizes, with comments noting that "most packets are labeled 2 servings... for me each packet is a single serving." Overall, the Mountain House Adventure Weekender Kit is recommended for those seeking quality and convenient camping meals, though potential buyers should be mindful of portion sizes and pricing.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Amazing taste of freeze-dried food
This stuff is AMAZING. Seriously, I am impressed.
Mountain House are consistently the best freeze dried foods out there.
That MH breakfast skillet is absolutely the best freeze-dried breakfast thing I've tried.
Mountain house can't be beat. Absolutely great quality.
Great taste and nutritious
It tastes great and is pretty nutritious.
Love MH. 100% my preferred FD brand - whether #10 can or pouches.
High quality meals
The mountain house meals are high quality but they are mostly carbs, which can generally be bought cheaper dried rather then freeze dried.
Meals are convenient for backpacking
The noodles and sauce were a 2/5 compared to real meals but for a dried meal it tasted just fine.
I do a lot of backpacking and occasionally take MH meals to eat.
Biscuits and gravy are a favorite
We have about a month worth of MH for three adults on hand in a tote, under the bed.
Good for emergency prep stock
I think they would be a good thing to have in my prep stock, and ultimately would feel worth it to me if I bought 30-50 worth of them every month or so, then just stowed them away.
Biscuits and gravy is a favorite meal
Just gonna let you in on a secret. Mountain house biscuits and gravy is the best one of them all.
The biscuits and sausage gravy are my fucking favorite.
I crave the Biscuits and sausage gravy when I'm not even hiking.
Diverse meal options available
Eating an entire bag of a main course yourself gets monotonous.
Convenient for quick meals while camping
If it that lazy morning or rainy night to know just a cup of hot water can get me a well deserved meal is the ultimate safety net of reassurance.
Tasty options available
MH all day. Beef stroganoff, breakfast skillet and chili Mac are my favorites
Extended shelf life of meals
Anyone know why there is such a difference in expiration? Also, he had some Wise meals with just a manufacture of 2015.
Mountain House changed the expiration for their pouches from 7 years to 30 years
Beef stew is a go-to option
Mountain House’s Beef Stew is and will always be my OG go to.
Good enough for long-term use
it’s as good as my homemade stroganoff.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Expensive for regular home use
I like to think of it as an investment.
Quality has declined due to cost-saving reformulations
Shame they reformulated for cost savings back in '17, a lot of recipes suffered for it.
Pasta texture is terrible and nutritionally poor
I think the pasta texture is terrible and near useless nutritionally.
Price has increased significantly over the years
Best Mountain House freeze dried food alternative? MH freeze dried food has gone up a lot in price over the years, I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for alternatives that are cheaper.
Small serving sizes
FYI, most packets are labeled 2 servings… for me each packet is a single serving.
Not suitable for long-term provisioning
Yes for their intended purpose, no for long-term provisioning.
Meals are not filling enough
They're only enough food for one person for the vast majority of people.
Expensive for the quantity provided
the convenience of meals like Mountain House and Packit Gourmet is awesome, but the cost is more.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on European freeze-dried food brands
German freeze dried food 10 years ago I climbed Denali. At the base camp people often leave extra food they don't need.
Reiter is a German brand, unless I'm mistaken.
I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip
Tips on preparing meals with water
Make sure to stir well as all the seasoning is at the bottom.
I just pour it directly in and let it sit.
I hike with a single cup alongside my waterbottle and the meals go in the cup.
Inquiry about freeze-drying process
How does big companies like Mountain House freeze dry their food? Hello.
I've never dried chili, but have done eggs many times.
They are making the meal entirely, then freeze drying it.
They freeze dry the meals in totality. It’s not done by ingredient and then mixed at Mountain House.
Technical differences between freeze-dried and dehydrated meals
I haven't tried Huel, but I'm interested.
Discussion about preferred brands for freeze-dried meals
Best Backcountry Meal Brand? I'm partial to Peak Refuel because I find they have the most calories + protein for the punch.
All American Burger Works (this is the best of them all and maybe my fav dehydrated meal from any company)
Discussion about types of camping (car camping vs backpacking)
Both are great and fun but backpacking requires you to be able to fit all of the food and gear into a pack you can then hike with.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on DIY cooking aids
That is a fantastic idea. Thanks!
Man, I made a beer koozie out of some spare Reflectix & Gorilla tape, just to see how it worked - best beer koozie ever!
Discussion on meal enhancements like hot sauce
It's all about having a little something to add to the meal to make it that much nicer.
Recommendations for local meal options
They have a bunch of different meals that meet different dietary needs.
Discussion about meal sharing and hunger levels
We both were STARVING after eating these things, especially after day 2.
Part of the problem is that I'm sharing my meals with my boyfriend who can eat a lot, so we both go hungry.
Most people over pack food. I'm surprised he doesn't bring enough.
Having enough food, and the RIGHT food, is definitely key :)
Inquiry about cooking and food options for backpacking
I thought this would be a good place to ask for some guidance. :)
I think one of the things I’m most curious about is cooking and what food to bring, portable stove etc. ?

Comparison with other brands

Consideration of other brands and prices
Best price Mountain House Food Looking to stock up on good freeze dried provisions.
Personally I prefer peak refuel but I think it’s subjective.
REI does indeed have tons of brand options
Discussion about alternatives like ramen and couscous
This. Also ramen, cup of noodles, or even just plain couscous (add your own seasoning) will work.
Discussion about freeze-dried food preferences
Which alpine aire meals do you recommend? I have a bunch of the peppered beef and rice that I like
$1800 would almost cover the cost of a freeze dryer. Then you can make your own. I like Mountain House and Backpackers Pantry.
Comparisons to other freeze-dried brands
Good Thinking, schould be easy to make something like this, with a little considering the size of it, because different Company’s have different Format’s
Suggestions for cheaper alternatives to Mountain House
Not always cheaper, but here are a bunch of alternative options:
Easy to make some of your own. Ramen bombs are great, cheap, and light.
Omeals are usually pretty cheap and extremely convenient as you don't have to boil water for them.
Discussion on trying different brands
Check out other brands, too, and sales online.
Comparisons of different Mountain House product lines
On the whole, I think MH products are amazing.
Comparison with other brands like Peak Refuel and Good to Go
Best tasting ones I have ever had are Peak Refuel.

Advice on packing additional food for hikes
My thumb rule is Mountain House 2 person = Real World 1 person
You're Welcome. Good luck.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Debate on the appearance of the food
It looks like a condensed-ish stew to me🤷‍♀️🙂‍↔️
Variability in freeze-dried food longevity
The changed their expiration dates but, not all freeze dried foods last the same amount of time.
This is a great opportunity to see what still tastes good.
