Peak Refuel! They're a little more expensive than the average, but they aren't salt bombs, generally have a good amount of protein in them, and rehydrate well.

Positive Feedback

Besides that, peak has been my favorite.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good protein content
Peak Refuel! They're a little more expensive than the average, but they aren't salt bombs, generally have a good amount of protein in them, and rehydrate well.
Peak refuel is so good. The calorie count is high enough I’m not scrambling to add another pack of tuna/chicken/tvp.
Biscuits and gravy for easy camp food.
Different version on meal prep - my husband and I will be camping for the next week and do not plan to eat out or buy food during the trip.
Delicious taste
Their dal bhat is so damn good. Super filling after only a few bites and really delicious!
Hell yeah. Love Peak Refuel. The separate bag makes it easier especially when bear can is necessary for space saving.
The biscuits and sausage gravy are my fucking favorite. So filling and heavy though.
I’ve been backpacking for over thirty years, and I mostly use Mountain House. It ‘s good enough. But last year I discovered Peak’s Beef Stroganoff, and I’m almost ashamed to confess it’s as good as my homemade stroganoff.
Best freeze-dried food
I have yet to find one meal that isn’t better than anything I’ve tasted in a US MRE.
Peak Refuel is the best freeze-dried food around.
Better quality ingredients
Peak Refuel and it's not even close. A casual look at ingredients tells you you're getting much better quality food.
Consistent flavors across meals
Flavors are pretty even across the board imo.
Higher calorie content for high mileage
They tend to have higher calories, most meals are over 800, which is good if you’re doing high daily mileage (over 20) and out on trail for more than 3 weeks, where your calorie consumption and hunger will usually increase.
Tastes better than most competitors
In my opinion the Peak Refuel usually taste better than most of the Mountain House stuff.
High protein content
Best Backcountry Meal Brand? I'm partial to Peak Refuel because I find they have the most calories + protein for the punch.
The peak refuel freeze dried meals are mostly the best. I crave the Biscuits and sausage gravy when I'm not even hiking.
I've been throwing in a peak refuel chicken pasta of some kind. That level of protein content is hard to find in my other meals and backpacking food, and it's a great pick-me-up after working at a deficit for a few days.
Better than competitors
I want to try them, but haven't had a good experience with Mountain House meals and don't want to repeat that if I can avoid it.
Definitely better than Mountain House
I like it better than MH.
Luxurious taste compared to competitors
The Peak Refuel biscuit is one entire freeze dried biscuit in the bag.
Tastes considerably better than competitors
I only eat Peak refuel. i've found them to taste considerably better than all the other brands i've tried, as well as being higher total calorie for the pack.
More calories per dollar compared to competitors
Peak Refuel offered more calories per $1. Much more food per package.
Better taste compared to Mountain House
Peak Refuel was noticeably better tasting to my and my family's taste buds.
Preferred choice among backpackers
Honestly, I look to backpackers for that advice.
Not sure but Peak Refuel is fucking great

Gastrointestinal discomfort from meals
Besides that, peak has been my favorite.
Brand name deters some buyers
Just the pretentious name "Peak Refuel" means I won't buy it.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on favorite freeze-dried meals
What is everyone raving about?
All American Burger Works (this is the best of them all and maybe my fav dehydrated meal from any company)
Mountain House’s Beef Stew is and will always be my OG go to.
Discussion on alternatives like Oregon Freeze Dried
They aren't as gourmet as Peak Refuel, but super filling, and quite good in my opinion
Discussion on personal taste preferences
Try a couple and see what tastes best to you.
Discussion on personal experiences with Peak Refuel meals
Excellent, thanks for the feedback. Any gastro issues from any of their meals?
User experiences with other freeze dried meals
Although the biscuits and gravy takes a few steps so its not exactly a quick backcountry meal
+1 on PIG and I will honestly admit that the Texas State Fair Chili is the single best backpacking meal I've eaten.
It is so much tastier and cheaper to make your own. I don’t even own a dehydrator.
I have enjoyed Backpacker's Pantry. Pad Thai and Kathmandu Curry are my favorites.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on repacking freeze-dried meals for backpacking
Repacking Freeze Dried Meals - How Long Before a Trip? I'm flying out on Wednesday to go backpacking in California.
Repack your meals and enjoy your trip.
I’ve done it without issue. I never know how many people I’ll be with so I tend to buy the #10 cans and use as needed.
I packed a bunch of stuff last feb for a trip into quart sized bags and my trip went short.
Recipe ideas shared in comments
Add in a quart of milk, season salt, sage, and cayenne to taste. Allow gravy to thicken for 12-15 minutes until desired texture is produced.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Preference for easy clean-up meals
Research which ones are actually good and I prefer the ones where you pour the water in the bag to avoid clean up + you can hug it while it “cooks” if it’s a cold night.
Discussion on water carry vs. hydration needs
Loved the study!
The water carry a bit of a stretch and likely context specific.
If I have managed to meet or exceed my daily need spread out over the course of the day hiking, missing the 8oz in the meal is not going to be detrimental.
Preference for lower calorie meals for smaller appetites
I intentionally buy the 450-600 calorie meals because they’re the correct amount of food for me and I don’t have to deal with leftover food getting gross in my trash bag.
Curiosity about shelf-life accuracy
Peak Refuel has the same 25-year shelf life but they do not want to be known as a "Long-Term Emergency Food" but as a choice for active campers and the like.
Discussion on trying Peak Refuel over competitors
I was very disappointed by the Good-to-go curry, so I'm def trying this next time.
Discussion on alternatives to freeze-dried meals.
Are there any brands that have comparable quality, but cheaper for the calories?
It's way cheaper than freeze dried meals, tastes better, and you can choose your own portions.
I feel so much better eating homemade dehydrated food, and it tastes 10 times better as well.
Good2goCo.ca has lots of options. I also found some good to-go meals which where 25% off at sail.
Comparisons to other brands
Emergency Essentials does genuinely give you the proper number of calories per day.
Advice to sample products before large purchases
You do. Buy small samples and find out what you like before you commit to a large purchase.
Discussion about meal prep challenges while camping
Throw in another box of wine, in case the first one breaks.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on sodium content in freeze-dried meals
Definitely not meant to be eaten as a “normal” meal.
the mountain house has a much better balance of protein, fat, and carbs which you will want if you’re doing strenuous activity.
This is a large PDF file currently at 409 pages with many pictures, so you might have trouble viewing it.
Funny take on dogs' reactions to freeze-dried food
Also, I asked your dog what they thought of freeze-dried backpacking food and they just said “HECKIN YES PLEASE”
He’s like “You don’t even have to add water! Trust me , bro!”
Caution against affiliate bias in reviews
Someone mentioned asking backpackers. This is the way. :)
