Snoop's Take

Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon is a freeze-dried backpacking and camping food designed for outdoor enthusiasts seeking convenient meal options. Each single serving is gluten-free and offers a satisfying taste that aims to elevate your outdoor culinary experience. Consumer feedback highlights the product's appealing flavor and convenience, with many users noting, "they are intriguing because as of now, I just have basics like rice, beans, oats, etc." The consistent quality of Mountain House meals has led to a loyal following, as many claim they are "consistently the best freeze-dried foods out there." However, there are concerns regarding high sodium content and the meals being somewhat basic compared to other gourmet options, which some users find limiting. Overall, despite some criticisms, Mountain House Scrambled Eggs with Bacon is recommended for those looking for quick and tasty meals while camping or hiking, especially for occasional use.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Tasty under most circumstances
These dehydrated meals honestly aren’t bad at all for what they are.
They are intriguing because as of now, I just have basics like rice, beans, oats, etc. which is great, and sustainable to an extent, but I would definitely yearn for a “meal” at some point if I was eating it long term.
They taste pretty good to me, but, as I've mentioned in other threads on this topic, they are not good for gut health.
Consistently high quality of freeze-dried meals
Mountain House are consistently the best freeze dried foods out there.
When you're hungry after a long day of canoeing/hiking/etc, mountain house can't be beat.
Amazing taste and variety in flavors
This stuff is AMAZING. Seriously, I am impressed.
That MH breakfast skillet is absolutely the best freeze-dried breakfast thing I've tried AND is fantastic stuffed into a tortilla for a breakfast burrito.
Mountain House breakfast skillet is freaking great
Convenient for outdoor activities
They’re small and lightweight. Went camping this weekend. It rained all afternoon so the planned campfire cooking was out, took out the jetboil and fixed a mountain house meal.
Convenient for camping supplies
The mountain house meals are high quality but they are mostly carbs, which can generally be bought cheaper dried rather then freeze dried.
Good taste after a long hike
Are those freeze dried meals (mountain house etc.) actually any good? I’m going camping soon and have never had that kind of stuff before.
It depends on how you define 'good'. Compared to their real counterparts, they're OK but after a full day of hiking and you're starving, they're pretty damn good.
Convenient choice for occasional use
I only do a couple trips a year and always use Mountain House out of convenience.
Best flavor in biscuits and gravy
Mountain house biscuits and gravy is the best one of them all.
Decent stew varieties
anything that's delicious as a stew/sauce type meal normally is decent
Good for sharing meals while camping
Eating an entire bag of a main course yourself gets monotonous.
Good taste variety
MH all day. Beef stroganoff, breakfast skillet and chili Mac are my favorites
Cost-effective when buying in bulk
Just fork out and buy yourself a #10 can of the mountain house breakfast scramble.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Quality has declined due to cost-saving reformulations
Shame they reformulated for cost savings back in '17, a lot of recipes suffered for it.
Expensive for regular use
The convenience of meals like Mountain House and Packit Gourmet is awesome, but the cost is more.
http://www.packitgourmet.com has great backpacking meals.
High sodium content limits frequent consumption
They are great for very acriv people (backpacking) or long day of labor work that causes you to sweat a lot.
Make sure you try them before you decide they are a "meal" — taste differs widely between meals, and even between people — an entree you love may be one that your partner can't stand.
Considered basic compared to other options
Mountain house is considered pretty basic?
Not suitable for long-term consumption
Personally they are nice meals but I wouldn't want to eat nothing but them long term.
Quality of rice sides has declined with added pasta
I think the pasta texture is terrible and near useless nutritionally.
Not suitable for long-term provisioning
Yes for their intended purpose, no for long-term provisioning.
Not enough food per serving
We both were STARVING after eating these things, especially after day 2.
This. Ignore the packaging on freeze dried meals; they're only enough food for one person for the vast majority of people.
Previous negative experiences with Mountain House meals
I want to try them, but haven't had a good experience with Mountain House meals and don't want to repeat that if I can avoid it.
Definitely better than Mountain House
I like it better than MH.
Disgusting texture and taste
I'd say the Mountain House Scrambled Eggs and Spinach is probably the most disgusting mixture of green and yellow goop I've ever laid eyes on.
Unappetizing experience leading to hunger
I couldn't bring myself to eat the meals after that.
Turn-off for new users
Yea the eggs are a huge turn of.

Eat all day long. Boil-a-meals are great for getting some warm food in before the temps drop, but you need to get away from the concept of breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Inquiry about cheaper alternatives to Mountain House
Best Mountain House freeze dried food alternative? MH freeze dried food has gone up a lot in price over the years, I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for alternatives that are cheaper.
Not always cheaper, but here are a bunch of alternative options:
Easy to make some of your own. Ramen bombs are great, cheap, and light.
Omeals are usually pretty cheap and extremely convenient as you don't have to boil water for them.
Discussion about other brands for comparison
Check out other brands, too, and sales online.
Users are interested in homemade meal alternatives
Sure enough found a few ranging from $20-40.

All of these have four major problems though: 1: Unhealthy as shit. High amounts of saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol.

this was surprisingly really good.

This. Also ramen, cup of noodles, or even just plain couscous (add your own seasoning) will work.
Older freeze-dried meals may still be good
The changed their expiration dates but, not all freeze dried foods last the same amount of time.
This is a great opportunity to see what still tastes good.
