Snoop's Take

Mountain House Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken is a delicious freeze-dried meal designed for backpacking and camping, offering two servings of tender pasta mixed with chicken in a creamy sauce. Users have praised the meal for its taste and convenience, with one reviewer noting, "These dehydrated meals honestly aren’t bad at all for what they are," highlighting that it rehydrates well even at high altitudes. Despite some concerns about the pasta texture and perceived value for regular home use, the overall sentiment leans positive, making this product a recommended choice for outdoor enthusiasts seeking quick and satisfying meals.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Tasty meals, especially after hiking
A real meal that weighs almost nothing in the pack and only needs hot water.
These dehydrated meals honestly aren’t bad at all for what they are.
Quality freeze-dried food
Best price Mountain House Food Looking to stock up on good freeze dried provisions.
Costco had a 12 pack of mountain house meals recently. It pencilled out to about 6 bucks per meal.
Great for stocking up
Personally I prefer peak refuel but I think it’s subjective.
Good value when on sale
Costco has 8 pack of Mountain House for 49.99 Not sure if it's everywhere, but it's in Lacey Washington.
TL;DR - This is a good deal.
Quick preparation time
With the rice sides usually I boil water and fill the pouch then fold the top closed.
Rehydrates well at high altitudes
But when you're up above that nothing rehydrates as well as mountain house.
Tastes great and nutritious
It tastes great and is pretty nutritious.
Love MH. 100% my preferred FD brand - whether #10 can or pouches.
Lightweight and portable
The mountain house meals are high quality but they are mostly carbs, which can generally be bought cheaper dried rather then freeze dried.
Tasty meals after hiking
they're pretty damn good.
Mountain house biscuits and gravy is the best one of them all.
Convenient for camping trips
I only do a couple trips a year and always use Mountain House out of convenience.
Decent variety of meals
Eating an entire bag of a main course yourself gets monotonous.
Extended shelf life for meals
Anyone know why there is such a difference in expiration?
Mountain House changed the expiration for their pouches from 7 years to 30 years
Good variety of meals
You're missing Biscuits and Gravy in there - tied for #1 with beef strog imo
Try the Breakfast Skillet? If not, I highly suggest it.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
High cost for regular home use
This was going to be a joke, but this was surprisingly really good.
They are great for very active people (backpacking) or long day of labor work that causes you to sweat a lot.
Quality has declined over time
Shame they reformulated for cost savings back in '17, a lot of recipes suffered for it.
Perceived as basic
Mountain house is considered pretty basic?
Pasta texture is poor
I think the pasta texture is terrible and near useless nutritionally.
Price has increased significantly over the years
Best Mountain House freeze dried food alternative? MH freeze dried food has gone up a lot in price over the years, I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for alternatives that are cheaper.
Meals are not filling enough for most people
Thanks! Yeah, I snack on clementines, cheese, and larabars throughout the day.
There's already some good advice here on how to supplement your meals, but I'l add that the Backpacker's Pantry brand fills me up more.
This. Ignore the packaging on freeze dried meals; they're only enough food for one person for the vast majority of people.
High cost compared to other meal options
So, the downside to mountain house meals (and similar) is that they're fucking expensive.
The convenience of meals like Mountain House and Packit Gourmet is awesome, but the cost is more.
Negative experience with Mountain House meals
I want to try them, but haven't had a good experience with Mountain House meals and don't want to repeat that if I can avoid it.
Definitely better than Mountain House

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Perceptions of the meal's appearance
It looks like a condensed-ish stew to me🤷‍♀️🙂‍↔️
Discussion about the freeze-drying process
How does big companies like Mountain House freeze dry their food? Hello.
I've never dried chili, but have done eggs many times.
They are making the meal entirely, then freeze drying it.
They freeze dry the meals in totality. It’s not done by ingredient and then mixed at Mountain House.
Discussion about freeze-dried food preferences
$1800 would almost cover the cost of a freeze dryer. Then you can make your own.
Discussion about different types of freeze-dried vs dehydrated meals
I haven't tried Huel, but I'm interested. Also note - 'freeze-dried' and 'dehydrated' are techni
Taste testing different flavors
Rice & Chicken - 810 calories - 5/5. It tastes like a normal Rice Sides except it actually has decent chunks of chicken in it.

Discussion on meal preparation methods
Do you use a coosie ? Or however it's spelled. Or just simply pour the boiling water into the Knorrs pouch and let it sit?
I just pour it directly in and let it sit.
I hike with a single cup alongside my waterbottle and the meals go in the cup.
Preference for adding ingredients to enhance meals
It's all about having a little something to add to the meal to make it that much nicer.
Discussion about dehydrators and meal prep
Sure enough found a few ranging from $20-40.

Discussion about other brands of freeze-dried food
German freeze dried food 10 years ago I climbed Denali. At the base camp people often leave extra food they don't need.
Reiter is a German brand, unless I'm mistaken.
I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip
Scott & Jon’s White Cheddar Mac & Cheese with Broccoli. Maybe the best frozen mac and cheese I’ve had.
Building a supply of freeze-dried meals over time
That's a good deal if you're looking to stock up.
Comparisons with other brands of freeze-dried food
Mountain House breakfast skillet is freaking great
Discussion about bulk purchasing
/r/trailmeals wiki has a bunch of good brands to check out.
Comparisons with other meal options
This. Also ramen, cup of noodles, or even just plain couscous (add your own seasoning) will work.
Discussion of alternatives to Mountain House meals
Not always cheaper, but here are a bunch of alternative options:
Easy to make some of your own. Ramen bombs are great, cheap, and light.
Omeals are usually pretty cheap and extremely convenient as you don't have to boil water for them.
Comparisons with other brands
Check out other brands, too, and sales online.
Debate on stocking up over time
They are intriguing because as of now, I just have basics like rice, beans, oats, etc. which is great, and sustainable to an extent, but I would definitely yearn for a “meal” at some point if I was eating it long term.
Discussion on food expiration dates
The changed their expiration dates but, not all freeze dried foods last the same amount of time.
I recently ate p nut butt r that was three years over and I was shocked, and TURKEY spam that was five years over.
Sharing meals can lead to hunger
Most people over pack food. I'm surprised he doesn't bring enough.
Having enough food, and the RIGHT food, is definitely key :)
Need for additional snacks or food during trips
My thumb rule is Mountain House 2 person = Real World 1 person
Comparison to Peak Refuel meals
I like it better than MH.
