Positive Feedback

Are Woks useless on an electric stove? It seems to me that everyone who talks about how to use woks for the home kitchen have these really high powered gas stoves.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Versatile cooking options
I'd go even further and say they might be the single most versatile pot/pan in existence.
I’d argue it’s better than a Dutch oven since it’s like a third of the weight.
Woks are very flexible. You can sear, braise, pan-fry, deep-fry, etc.
Anyone know if it works for electric stoves?
Good for deep frying
since you're cooking at such a high heat it doesn't take very long and gets passable results for home cooking.
Less messy cooking experience
It’s less messy. The high sides hold in the food better.
Good performance on gas stoves
Anyone thinking they ruined their wok, let me just say this: Ive rusted this pan so many times, burned on food, scraped it with steel wool, used metal utensils, and it works wonderfully.
People often forget that it's just a big fucking piece of metal - you can't ruin the damn thing!

Not ideal for authentic stir fry

It really depends what you're trying to do in it. If you're trying to get authentic stir fry or cook something that requires a constantly ripping hot wok, it's probably not going to work out.
Useless, no - they're still a good surface for cooking on.
Limited performance on electric stoves
Flat bottom woks work great on conventional electric and induction stoves.
I use my wok on the electric cooktop!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on wok types and heating methods
I'm afraid the heat doesn't spread evenly and before seasoning I want to be 100% sure I'm not taking the wrong choice.
My flat-bottomed wok kept warping, which is a problem with a lot of them due to using high heat.
I actually think cast iron would be the way to go to prevent the warping /spinning.
Your current wok will do fine.
Discussion on overheating electric stoves
I’ve tried to clean and get off the residue, but no luck so far.
My avocado oil burst into flames when I poured it in.
You got it way too hot. Just keep cooking and preheat on medium low.
If it's sticky or not smooth when touching it, I recommend maybe vinegar.
Discussion on electric stove cycling
Does anyone know why my electric stove turns on and off as it heats things up? It cycles like this endlessly and makes it take much longer to boil water.
That's how they work, click on until it reaches the set temp, clicks off, as the heat soaks into your pan it turns back on.
If your cookware does not make full contact (or the material just sucks at absorbing heat) then it's not able to effectively absorb the heat from the glass and the burner will cycle more often.
it's part of the feature to save electricity... and this keeps the element from not overheating. and let it cool down.
Discussion on issues with electric stove cooking
So I have an electric stove and all of my pans have gotten warped and does not cook evenly.
I haven't had a problem in the past warping on electric coils.
My pans have since stopped warping after I stopped subjecting them to such high temperatures.
