Snoop's Take

The PETZL P03A Mobile Versatile Ultra-Compact Pulley is a lightweight and compact pulley designed for various hauling systems and deviations. It features a sheave mounted on self-lubricating bushings, ensuring good efficiency with a maximum working load of 5 kN, making it a practical tool for climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. However, consumer feedback reveals some concerns regarding the product's design and pricing. Many users find the harness design uncomfortable for extended use, stating that "Petzl harnesses are shit." Additionally, there's a sentiment that Petzl products are on the pricier side, with comments like "Petzl has a cool auto locking pulley that's pretty decent but petzl is pricey." Furthermore, the cam-lock feature is noted as essential, with feedback indicating that "being able to lock the cam is essential in standard use scenarios." Considering the feedback, while the PETZL P03A Pulley has its strengths, particularly in efficiency and compactness, potential buyers should weigh the discomfort and price concerns. It may be a suitable choice for those prioritizing performance but could be less ideal for users seeking comfort and value in their climbing gear.

Uncomfortable harness design for extended use
Petzel harnesses are shit.
Insufficient gear loops on smaller harness sizes
Petzl astro gear loops So as petzl have the strange belief that smaller people don't need as many gear loops and put 3 on the astro size 0 instead of 4 like on the size 1 and 2, I decided to make my own.
Petzl products are considered pricey
Petzl has a cool auto locking pulley that's pretty decent but petzl is pricey.
The new GriGri's are not ideal due to the short lever, the old ones are a bit better.
Cheap pulleys are cheap pulleys. For your purpose, cheap climbing pulleys will not perform noticeably better than cheap hardware store pulleys.
Cam-lock feature is essential
Being able to lock the cam is essential in standard use scenarios
not being able to open the cam-lock on the nano is a problem sometimes.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about changes in Petzl Connect Adjust lanyards
First listing of the new Petzl connect adjust 2 has appeared online
Interesting, from what I see the main difference is the "sling" at the end of the lanyard replacing the loop.
This isn't the main change, they beefed up the rating on them, and there's a release loop on the device now.
I’m curious how they intend for that lanyard attachment hole on the front of the device to be used.
Petzl ProTraxion is effective for progress capture
Petzl ProTraxion is an awesome progress-capture device - load goes up, but won't go down, unless the brake is manually released.
Discussion on the effectiveness of RollNLock and Microtraxion for various climbing scenarios.
I find that when engaging the progress capture, the RollNLock occasionally doesn't "bite" the rope first try.
If i was to do it again i would get the microtrax, it’s pretty much all around a better device.
Pulleys are beneficial for crevasse rescue kits
They add significant ease to hauling but one can get by without them.
I keep pulleys in mine. I’ve been using the micro traxion for a while and it’s great.
Definitely for a 2 person team, maybe for a 3/4 person team (depending on how remote the objective is and the experience of the team).
I find it super efficient. I can drop a loop with a pulley to my partner in the crevasse if they are in good enough shape to hook it to their harness.
Discussion about the weight rating of Petzl pulleys
Just buy whatever is cheap.
Comment on the quality of pulleys
Sounds like shitty pulleys.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Usage scenarios for pulleys in rescue operations
Most can be done with the nano as well but having to hold it open makes the operation much more cumbersome and one hand is blocked
This helps the rest of the party to arrest and hold the fall.
Many users find Petzl products to be popular among climbers.
It seems like lots of climbing forums like the RollnLock pulley but most of the conversation is around solo TR.
many, many use petzl
Discussion about highlining techniques and equipment
I would like to get a grigri so I can teach my friends rock climbing, and I was wondering if I could use it for highlining.
Yes you can but you should still soft point the line.
No one uses pulleys for highlining anymore.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparison of gear loops across different harness sizes
I couldn’t feel the two loops on the left and right of the rear webbing
Instead of a rope loop the next model will be a tape sling sewn to the rope.
Discussion about pulley compatibility with the Sequoia SRT
We recently managed to save up enough money to buy the Petzl Sequoia SRT.
I wouldn’t attach this rock exotica (edit : Omni block) to the rope bridge as a life supporting device.
The hydra is a fixed pulley, unlike the omni which is midline attachable.
You can either add another bride with two termination knots (the sequoia srt has an extra bridge attachment) or you can buy the petzl swivel that works with that bridge.
Recommendations for alternative pulleys
Honestly I went through this with a Rook.
Discussion about alternative pulleys
I'm reaching out to this knowledgeable community to get some real-world feedback on these two devices.
I personally own the SPOC and I don't have any issues with it yet.
The spring in my first Spoc broke after using it for a rope solo backup, lasted about two years.
Debate on the necessity of a pulley system for pull-ups
Your time is probably better spent actually doing the workout to get to a single pullup than by building a pulley system.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion of non-PETZL pulleys
Favorite Progress Capture Pulley Looking for a progress capture pulley for entertainment rigging to pull light fixtures, motor points and whatever else.
I have two devices I really like.
I'm a fan of Camp's [turbolock](https://www.treestuff.com/camp-turbolock-progress-capture-pulley/) progress capture pulley. It's sheave size relative to weight is really good.
The ratcheting pulley is what you’re after, the harken like someone mentioned or ronstan make a good one.
Discussion about different pulley brands and models
Slings and pulleys for Tower rigging
The petzl partner is only a few dollars more, and swivels open.
Seems like a similar design to the Petzl pulley.
Discussion on differences between swivel and fixed pulleys
Question about pulleys Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I was wondering what the functional difference was between a swivel pulley (ex:petzl partner) and one with fixed sides (ex:DMM Pinto).
Fixed side plate pulleys can be easier to install, but require oval (or otherwise self-centering) connectors.
I watched a prospective level 3 fail because he assumed that the fixe pulleys are more efficient.
Functionally the provide the same purpose.
