Mine has a gauge and I literally stare at it the whole time. Mostly I can fish, which takes 100 minutes.

Positive Feedback

a pot with a locking lid that doesn’t let out pressure properly sounds like shitty design whichever way you spin it.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Modern pressure cookers have enhanced safety features
Mine has a gauge and I literally stare at it the whole time. Mostly I can fish, which takes 100 minutes.
"hey how you wanna cook this food"
Luckily the ones they make now are generally a lot safer. Mine has a silicon plug in the lid that blows out if it's over pressure, it would be really hard to clog because it's just a section of the lid it also has two different safety blowoff valves and it locks when under pressure to prevent opening.
I found a manual pressure cooker at a garage sale a few times... They're fucking scary. I feel much better with an electric cooker, set it to high pressure and walk away until it beeps at me to say it's done.
Electric pressure cookers are easier to use
they were pretty easy to use.
Instant pots don't reach the pressure levels of older stovetop pressure cookers.
Multiple cooking functions
What I can’t figure out it what the difference is between the Duo, Duo Plus, and Ultra.
Looks great on the countertop, and works fabulous for what I managed to cook so far.
Effective slow cooking results
slow cooked a pork shoulder in it and it turned out amazing
Since my slow cooker broke, I’ve used my IP for slow cooking pretty frequently and it’s been great. Just did a big pot roast w/ potatoes and carrots on Monday and everything was cooked perfectly. It’s been a champ.
High pressure setting works well for pulled pork
Use the high pressure setting for my pulled pork and it works great and only takes an hour...
Pressure cookers cook meals faster
Pressure cookers will let you cook faster and do make a difference.
Yes, things will cook faster (great for beans)...I can make a nice short rib soup in about 22 minutes.
Having a yogurt program is beneficial
Any of those models are fine. I recommend getting one with a yogurt program, worth trying.
Longer cook times yield better rice texture
The longer cook times on the fancier rice cookers gives a better finished product.
Ability to keep rice warm after cooking
The point of these things is you can set your rice cooking way before you need it and it will keep it perfectly warm until you do.
Versatility in cooking options
having a pressure-cook capability greatly widens the kinds of things you can cook (ie. meats, lentils/pulses, etc)
Of all 3, a modern pressure cooker/instant pot is the most versatile.
We have the pressure cooker version and it’s a banger.
Pressure cooking improves rice quality
Pressure cooking rice will make even cheap rice taste respectable.
Effective cooking of brown rice with adjusted settings
I cook brown rice with a 1:1 rice to water ratio. I have never used the rice setting but I cook it on high pressure for 25 minutes with a 10 minute natural release and it always comes out perfect.
I use a similar ratio of rice to water, but I put it on Manual, high pressure, for 25 minutes. Then full natural release.
You can adjust the cooking time on the rice setting.
Easy to clean
SO EASY to clean.
It's stainless steel so it's comically easy to clean.
Sufficient size for multiple servings
I have the 6qt and it's big enough to easily cook 4 meals, so it should be enough.
The extra space is good for leftovers, but also for many recipes with beans and other ingredients where the recommendation is to not go past the 1/2 mark.
Easy to achieve desired cooking results with correct timing
For broccoli, I always set mine to 0 (get to pressure, then stop) and it comes out pretty on point.
Less water needed for faster cooking
If you're steaming something like broccoli only put in the minimum water requirement of 1 cup so there's less water that needs to be heated.

Where it needs some work!

Poor pressure retention and safety concerns
a pot with a locking lid that doesn’t let out pressure properly sounds like shitty design whichever way you spin it.
I was like "hmmm seems like a really shitty quality pressure cooker."

Concerns over pressure cooker explosions
We never used one again.
Pressure cookers have since been banned from our family.
she now has sever burn scars on her face.
Anxiety associated with using pressure cookers
I lived in dread of the pressure cookers my mom used when I was growing up.
This is my fear with using a pressure cooker in general, I would especially be afraid of those old ones, they sus.
Newbie who’s terrified of using the pressure cooker.... I’m so afraid of it going flying across the kitchen like a canon ball.
I used to be terrified of pressure cookers because as a kid I took the weight of ours and my parents freaked out and started screaming that all the food was going to be squirted on the ceiling.
Electric pressure cookers perform poorly as slow cookers
America's Test Kitchen tested different brands of electric pressure cookers and determined that Instant Pots perform poorly as slow cookers.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Cultural perspective on rice cookers as dispensers for multiple meals
People in places that design rice cookers don’t see them like blenders or toasters, they aren’t for making a set of something for a single meal.
General comparisons and opinions on other brands
Instant pot is not rated as highly as they are popular.
It doesn’t have all the same cooking options the higher end Instant Pots have.
I'm very pleased with my Fagor Duo, it's my first pressure cooker and we now use it almost daily.
Comparison of features with other brands
Can someone please sell me on why I need to buy an Insta Pot vs another brand?

Debate over necessity of pressure cooker vs. rice cooker
Rice cooker with or without a pressure cooker? Looking at buying a rice cooker, but I'm not sure whether or not a pressure cooker is to my advantage when I have a crockpot.
My friends who live at 2000 meters say the pressure cooker is a big help though.
What is the relevance of pressure cooker vs. crockpot when trying to decide if you need a rice cooker?
Discussion on rice cooking techniques in pressure cookers
My brown rice has turned out great.
Ok I will try this. When you release the valve, did the steam come out or was the steam released already?
It’s when you let the instant pot sit after the cook time is over.

Comparisons to other pressure cookers
I feel like my Instant Pot holds a lot more pressure than that.
Yeah, but it also has a lock to prevent it from opening when under pressure, so this wouldn't be possible
You mean the technology is widely available in another product and is used to prevent idiots from burning themselves? There’s a class action lawsuit in the air
That thing is so cool looking! Love the art deco style!
Historical fears and experiences with pressure cookers
Wow. I have never been somewhere that cold.
The ones we have are exactly like this, cannot be opened if pressurized, and overpressure valve for emergency
steam explosions in heating and industrial accidents used to be a major killer in the US.
General chatter about cooking safety and techniques
For good reason…this is some hokuspokus cooking…
Pressure canning is the only thing that 1) makes my want to pull my hair out because I always over plant and then have to can for days on end, and 2) brings me so much joy in the dead of winter, it makes everything worth it!
General chatter about pressure cooker usage
Also if you fill it to the max fill line, do not be making dried beans! They expand a lot!
I have a Presto that is similar. Been using it for years and I still have a healthy respect for it.
Discussion on heating methods of pressure cookers vs slow cookers
I thought the issue was that IP heats from the bottom, while crockpots heat from the sides as well.
Basic cooking methods using the rice cooker
I really, really don't cook so please be gentle.
Ok easiest is rice and Chinese sausage.
What’s the “finger tip method”?
Water covers the rice up to the first joint on your finger.
Confusion over rice cooker recommendations
I'm looking for a rice cooker recommendation as a gift, and after searching around for a while, I'm even more confused than I started.
Rice comes out perfect each time with no clumping at all.
Sometimes it’s not a problem of the rice cooker. Rice varieties and the wrong amount of water make clumps.
Sometimes it’s not a problem of the rice cooker. Rice varieties and the wrong amount of water make c
Discussion on pressure cooker size preferences
Should I opt for the 8 quart? It’s only my wife and I but I like to cook extra for lunch the next day.
6 quart is good, most recipes are written with a six quart in mine.
Comparison of electric vs stovetop pressure cookers for speed
Most stovetop pressure cookers allow 15psi high pressure, which cook faster than the 12psi electric models.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns over design and user safety
Yeah, I ain't gonna trust some pressure cooker with a glass top either (at least I'm not aware of any good ones with a glass cover).
As someone who had to clean a kitchen where a soup basically erupted from a pressure cooker I agree, there was basically no overpressure on this thing.
I thought it was gonna explode and belong to r/nsfl
It hadnt reached pressure. Pressure cookers cant be opened. The pressure prevents. But if you clog a vent on an oldnone, BOOM!!! THE Instapot is much safer but still, know what your doing and keep your lids clean.
Concerns over missing inner lid affecting rice cooking
Will the rice cooker still work properly? I can't find a replacement lid anywhere.
I did this once accidentally (different brand of rice cooker though) and the rice didn’t come out at all.
without the steam vent too much steam escaped and the rice didn't cook properly.
User confusion about the presence of the inner lid
Well, it works great! Whew!
