Snoop's Take

The Cuisinart HM-90BCS Power Advantage Plus 9-Speed Handheld Mixer is designed for both novice and experienced bakers, offering versatility and convenience in mixing tasks. With features like a 220-watt motor and SmoothStart technology, it delivers superior performance while minimizing splatter, making it ideal for various mixing needs. Consumer sentiment highlights the durability and reliability of the mixer, with many users stating, "I've had this one for many years now and it hasn't failed yet." However, some feedback points to concerns about the rusting of attachments and the mixer’s inability to handle heavy doughs effectively. Despite these criticisms, the product is praised for its design and has been recommended by America's Test Kitchen, which adds to its credibility. Overall, the Cuisinart HM-90BCS is a recommended choice in the handheld mixer category, especially for those who require a reliable tool for lighter mixing tasks. However, potential buyers should consider their specific mixing needs, particularly for heavier doughs.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Long-lasting product
I have the Cuisinart in purple. I've had it about 15 years.
It's probably over 20 years old. Of course, I use my stand mixer for the heavy jobs more often, but the hands mixer has made small batches of chocolate chip cookies.
I have a Cuisinart that I've had for probably 10+ years. I went through several Walmart brands trying to make cookies.
Superior performance with high power
I agree, my Cuisinart is too fast and too noisy.
Looking at new hand mixers I either find ones with skinny beaters that look like they will break after a couple of months, rubber beaters where the rubber will wear off eventually, or warp speed mixers that don't have a true slow speed and splatter everywhere (My current one does this.).
Recommended by America's Test Kitchen
Cuisinart made the best hand mixer out of the ones they tested.
Durable and reliable over the years
I've had this one for many years now and it hasn't failed yet.
Cute design
It’s cute

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Lack of storage solution for attachments
I suspect it won’t matter which one you pick.
Product rusted within 3 years
Whatever you do, don’t buy this one. It rusted within 3 years.
Not suitable for heavy doughs
You'd probably be better off looking for a stand mixer if you do a lot of that... otherwise I'd suggest doing your cinnamon rolls by hand.
General dissatisfaction with this specific hand blender
A handblender, yes; THIS handblender? no.
Slowest speeds are too fast for delicate tasks
I've ended up doing them all manually despite having a hand mixer because everything would start flying around.
The slowest speeds on the Cuisinarts all seem to be way too fast.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Casual bakers may prefer lower-speed options
Do you really need 9 speeds, or is 5 sufficient?
For casual baking, I would go with the less expensive mixer.
5 speed will be fine.
I think some of the stick blenders come with a whisk attachment, but if you're only really using it for doughs, an actual hand mixer is better.
Discussion on mixer features and speeds
The high speeds are really for a few things and i dont think the variation is much to notice.
General discussion about hand blenders without specific brand preference
I use mine all the time! Soups, Mayo, sauces, etc
Discussion about features of mixers and their effectiveness
Is your only problem stuff splattering? That the only reason you want something slower?
I don't think any hand mixers can go as slowly as, say, a stand mixer.
I have a Kitchenaid hand mixer and the first setting is fairly slow.
Discussion on various mixers and their features
I’ve been pretty happy with this system, except that using the built-in plug only charges at 10W, so it'll take 4+ hours to fully charge itself and longer if you're passthrough charging.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Hand mixers are sufficient for beginner bakers.
A hand mixer is perfectly fine to start with for baking as long as you are mixing things like cake batter, whipped cream, brownie batter, creaming butter and eggs together, mixing cookie dough, etc.
Absolutely. The only thing the hand mixer likely can’t handle would be denser, bread dough.
Comparison of various mixers, including KitchenAid and Hamilton Beach.
the Hamilton Beach is much cheaper for, according to CR, basically the same rating.
Discussion on various mixers, including KitchenAid and Hamilton Beach.
this one is handy for smaller jobs or whipping cream.
I have the whole bunch of KitchenAid in the boysenberry
Discussion on the need for stand vs. hand mixers
Hey y’all, I just killed yet another hand mixer while baking chocolate chip cookies.
Discussion on preferences for low-speed settings in mixers
And now whenever I make cheesecake, it cracks down the center.
I have a 6 speed KitchenAid that I’ve had for 6 or 7 years.
I’m really just hoping it lives forever 😢
What was the make/model of your old one?
Discussion about the advantages of expensive mixers
Better motor power, less shaking, and ideally beaters that won't rust are going to be the pros of buying a nicer one.
Comparison of different mixer brands and models
Oooh, I'm gonna have to look that up. I should have thought of them having a segment on hand mixers!
Awesome! It looks like the best options are that mixer or this different Cuisinart model that someone posted below.
Discussion on the need for a quick hand mixer vs. stand mixer
does the KA hold up better to the test of time? Is it worth the price difference or, is this a case of just “paying for the brand name”?
I find I use it all the time because of how convenient it is. I don’t know why, but not having to plug it in seems to make a big difference in convenience, so I’ll reach for it even when I wouldn’t reach for the corded model.
That’s one more reason to stick with KitchenAid.
i got a vitamix e310 for christmas and my dumb self still wants the x5.
Hand mixers can be sufficient for beginner bakers
He was very upset with the final product.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about varying quality of hand mixers
it has held up super well. It has the thicker beaters too.
it has held up for over a year with no issues.
Just needed to get this off my chest I guess, def a reminder to review shows before showing them to kids, even if the rating seems like it should be benign.
Discussion about longevity of various mixers
I've had a kitchenaid hand mixer for 10 years now, and it's still going strong!
My braun 5 in one hand mixer combo lasted a good 10 years before it gave up recently.
My KitchenAid hand mixer is 30+ years old and going strong.
Pros and cons of various hand mixers
I’d probably bake more if I had one.
Discussion on noise levels of hand mixers
Do relatively quiet hand mixers exist? My hand mixer is super loud (we’re talking vacuum-cleaner levels) and I’m always hesitant to make meringue-based stuff because I don’t want to disturb my neighbors too much.
how old is it? and how good a quality device is it? there could be parts in the motor (bearings, brushes, etc) that might be worn and causing excessive vibration or “slap” on the shaft that would make it noisy.
I would invest in a stand mixer, and or forget about the neighbors. Unless there is a "quiet time" or they happen to pay the mortgage/rent, I wouldn't worry about them.
Question about performance and reviews
All reviews I see from all outlets are good.
