Consumer feedback highlights several strengths of this mixer, noting its durability and effectiveness for smaller baking tasks. Users appreciate that "this mixer will make everything so much easier" and many have praised its longevity, with some stating that it has lasted them decades. However, there are concerns regarding its power when dealing with denser doughs, as some users noted limitations in handling tougher mixing tasks. A hand mixer is perfectly fine to start with for baking as long as you are mixing things like cake batter, whipped cream, brownie batter, creaming butter and eggs together, mixing cookie dough, etc.

Positive Feedback

I think I'd get the Hamilton Beach and start saving for a stand mixer!

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great for starting baking
A hand mixer is perfectly fine to start with for baking as long as you are mixing things like cake batter, whipped cream, brownie batter, creaming butter and eggs together, mixing cookie dough, etc.
Absolutely. The only thing the hand mixer likely can’t handle would be denser, bread dough.
Convenient for smaller jobs
this one is handy for smaller jobs or whipping cream.
I'm just not sure if I need the 5 or 9 speed.
the convenience of the cordless model is fantastic—I often find myself picking it up for tasks I would normally use a whisk for
Effective for mixing tasks
This mixer will make everything so much easier.
I like mixing dough!
Great for smaller mixing tasks
lots of jobs are simpler, easier, and quicker, to just use a hand mixer.
Great for casual baking
Should I go with the KitchenAid 5 Speed Hand Mixer for $60 or the 9 speed for $110?
Durable and long-lasting
This is the only answer. It will outlive you and any children you may have 😂
Mine is almost 30 years old, never had a problem.
I've had mine for almost 20 years still working like a champ. It will probably outlive me
If you use it properly, it should last a long time.
Makes baking easier and more efficient
I'm able to make so many things so much more efficiently than before.
Not impressed in the least.
Works well for lighter doughs
I used the cheapest hand mixer a few times when i started out with bread making and it works just fine.
Works better than my stand mixer in my opinion
Great investment for active kitchen use
It has been great and a worthwhile investment.
I credit the thing to making mixing cookie dough and kneading bread dough easy enough for me to even *want* to bake every week.
Offers good sales opportunities
I absolutely love my KA mixer and it’s one of my favorite kitchen items I own.
Convenient for quick tasks
But there are times I just need a good ole hand mixer.
I have the 5 speed and it's been a great gadget to have.
Offers flexibility with multiple speed options
I only have the 5 speed and I love it.
Good for occasional use
Thank you! I would also consider the 5 speed.
Great for small tasks
That thing is a workhorse for those of us without the budget and/or space for a stand mixer.
Durable construction
we have one of these, old as hell and still works fine!
Any kitchen aid mixer from a thrift store is definitely worth repairing.
Built to last with durable construction
I swear it's built better than my car.
The mixer is DEFINITELY built better than my car.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Not the cheapest option
I think I'd get the Hamilton Beach and start saving for a stand mixer!
Lacks storage solution for attachments
I suspect it won’t matter which one you pick.
May require adjustment for optimal use
Haven't seen this mentioned yet but try adjusting the clearance on your mixer
Limited power for tougher mixing tasks
I bought the rechargeable immersion blender that is so powerful and it has so much power.
Noise issues compared to other mixers
my Cuisinart is too fast and too noisy.
Limited power for tough doughs
The only thing it's been good at is whipping cream.
Kitchen-Aid specifically says in their manuals to knead dough at speed 2 and that anything higher creates a potential for failure.
People will try to fill the bowl with a stiff bread dough and expect it to work. Not going to happen.
I expect more than a year.
Struggles with dense doughs
I did not enjoy that.
Limited effectiveness with bread dough
None effective. Unless some of the high end mixer I see, $100+, AND you can hold on to it, I don't see any of them doing anything like remotely working with bread dough.
I question my tilt lock at that point, and always feel I have to hold that old bitch down.
Can be difficult to manage with larger batches
But it seems that I'll just have to settle for classic elbow grease.
Concerns about mixer safety
I don’t trust anything anymore
Limited speed options for some users
I have the 5 speed and it’s way too slow for my needs. It just collects dust.
Costly with expensive attachments
They are kinda pricey, especially considering the cost of all the extra attachments.
Possible electrical issues reported
Thanks I may do that, the second time we used it we had it short out electrically.
Issues with warranty and customer support
Most of their mixers have a 1 year warranty. Seems crummy that a company known for quality won't stand behind their products in a meaningful way.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Hand mixers are useful for small tasks.
a hand mixer is certainly a useful tool.
It still works great btw and I use it for smaller jobs.
Personal stories about KitchenAid ownership
I have the KitchenAid in purple lol
Discussion on speed preferences
The 6 speed is fantastic. Its like riding a bike and then getting a porsche.
Celebration of baking experiences
Get the mixer.
Happy to help. My husband gave me mine for Christmas about 10 years ago and as my arthritis has developed, I appreciate it more and more.
Discussion about color selection in Artisan mixers
most people don't really need a really heavy duty mixer if they're just doing the occasional cake or brownies or whatever.
Celebration of KitchenAid appliances beyond mixers
I love the KA dishwasher. The third rack is game changer.
Comparative torque specs with other tools
The dynamic torque specs (700 ft-lbs) for my Milwaukee impact are actually comparable to my 1.3 HP KitchenAid…
Discussion about the color of the mixer
Found this KitchenAid mixer from the 1970's for $35. New grease and paint and it's as good as new.
Looks like teal
Two is a mix of green and blue. This is just powder blue.
Nope, closer to a teal (turquoise really), and seafoam than powder blue.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about cake decoration
Oh, I just love how the top of the cake looks with the sprinkles and everything.
Also that sprinkle trick I will definitely consider next time I need to make a birthday cake haha
Ideas for enhancing a used mixer gift
What if you fill up the bowl with a few upper tier baking ingredients? Or a few smaller, new kitchen items that would further enhance his baking experience?
This could be a good idea. I don’t even personally have any attachments for the mixer because I find them very kitschy. But, a bunch of different flours could be fun.
It's like turning the mixer into a gift basket. Lol
I would be happy to get a used Kitchenaid, but if the bowl contained some high quality vanilla, the book Dessert Person by Claire Saffitz, and maybe a bag or two of King Arthur's fancy specialty flours, I would be SUPER excited.
Discussion about painting appliances
There are appliance paints/enamels that are out there and pretty common at major hardware stores.
Rustoleum makes Appliance paint. I used that to paint my dishwasher. Works great.
You can really go crazy and give it a couple coats with super fine sanding in-between coats and then a polish.
Discussion on the practicality of fixing old mixers
Nice work.
You mix dough.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Curiosity about the mixer
Beautiful cake 🎂 I need a “mixer” too.
Discussion about the need for a stand mixer vs. hand mixer.
why not commit to both in your mind, and have them represent the phases of your life together?
He knows what he wants and why.
Discussion about starting with a hand mixer
I want to learn how to make sweets like cookies and cakes and many more.
Discussion on mixing techniques
If you’re stopping every **20 seconds**, you may be using butter that is the wrong temp and/or the speed may be too low.
Ahhh it could maybe be the speed? I had the right temp of butter… at least what has always been right in the past for me 😅
Increase the speed a bit. I normally start my butter and sugar on speed 2 to combine them, then do a quick scrape and run between speed 4-6 for creaming depending on what I’m making.
I never use the bowl cover because its just in the way. If you start on a really low speed after adding your dry and then increase speed after its slightly mixed in, it won’t fly everywhere.
Debate over necessity of hand mixer vs. stand mixer
If you already have a stand mixer then I think not.
Debate over hand mixer vs. stand mixer
Paddle to cream.
Holy FUCK. You creamed ten sticks of butter BY HAND?
Comparison of bowl-lift and tilt-head mixers
I have the lift and prefer it.
The lower height may have something to do with it too.
Curiosity about the long-term use of mixers
I have a KitchenAid mixer, but don't use it at all. It's a "project" that I have not started yet.
Discussion about choosing between stand mixer sizes
For me I'm not sure if I need the 7 Quart one, but for just a bit more I get a large unit.
Go for the 7qt
Definitely the 7 quart! I absolutely love mine. You won’t regret it.
Debate on practicality of bowl size for different baking tasks
the 7 quart bowl is not practical for everything.
Comparison of hand mixers with stand mixers
35 years later and still works like a charm.
Discussion about the necessity of a hand mixer versus a stand mixer
having both really makes sense.
Curiosity about KitchenAid's longevity
It has 1 plastic gear that costs 10 bucks. It's made to break to prevent you from shearing the gears or burning up the motor.
I thought I read somewhere that the nylon gears were intended to be an intentional failure point protect the motor if anything goes wrong.
Curiosity about the longevity and maintenance of mixers
We still use it nearly every week.
Stops rust protective enamel spray paint.
Then an engineer from kitchen aid chimed in that the plastic gears are actually better because they are cheap and easy to replace and wont burn out the motor if you overload the mixer.
Thanks!
Discussion about warranty and customer service responsiveness
They are a good company when it comes to products not lasting as long as they should.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Celebration of getting a mixer
After 20 years of baking by hand, I got a hand mixer! It is banana flavoured with strawberry inbetween the layers :)
😍 Did you make this amazingness simply to celebrate getting a mixer?
Celebration of baking as a shared activity.
Every time he’s at my house, he always wants to bake something just to use it! When my mom is using it for cooking purposes, he offers to help because it means he can use it lol.
he isn’t CONSTANTLY baking (really just when he’s at my house), he doesn’t really cook on his own so i’m not sure if it’s worth getting the stand mixer just yet.
Discussion about mixer longevity
Never again, kitchenaid mafia 4 life
Tilt head or bowl lift?
Personal experiences with KitchenAid mixers over the years
In my experience the machines are pretty comparable, it really just depends if you have the room for the larger mixer and if like the lift or tilt.
Celebration of memories with the mixer
I have had this for going on FIFTEEN years and it works just as well as the day I got it.
Discussion on the value of restored mixers
Beautiful restore and a thoughtful gift!
Agreed, would much rather have something thoughtful and repaired/restored like this than an out of the box Black Friday special.
Anyone can buy something if you have the plastic. But to make the time to restore or build something is a higher level of caring and love.
I'd love to make wonderful handmade gifts for others (and myself) that will last a lifetime and be used every day than buy them some store-bought trash that will end up in a landfill.
