Snoop's Take

The Chemex Pour-Over Glass Coffeemaker is a stylish coffee brewing device designed for those who appreciate a clean, flavorful cup of coffee. With its elegant design and high-quality borosilicate glass construction, it not only brews coffee but also serves as a beautiful centerpiece in any kitchen. Consumer feedback highlights several strengths of the Chemex, including its ability to produce a "sweeter and less acidic brew," making it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts. Many users appreciate its attractive design, stating, "Honestly just so damn aesthetically pleasing I went with it and haven't had any problems over the last year," while also noting the ease of cleaning and the fun brewing process it offers. However, some users caution that it may not be ideal for beginners due to the attention required during brewing and the potential for missing out on certain coffee flavors. Overall, the Chemex Pour-Over Glass Coffeemaker is highly recommended for those who enjoy the craft of brewing coffee and are willing to invest time into mastering their technique. While it may require some skill and care, the unique brewing experience and resulting flavor profile make it a worthwhile addition to any coffee lover's collection.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Produces a sweeter and less acidic brew
If you want a sweeter and less acidic brew, then the Chemex is exactly what you want.
Attractive design
I bought the chemex for the looks but nowadays use when I need a thicker, slower draining filter.
I love the look of the chemex, but I prefer a sweeter and less acidic profile, so decided on the Kalita Wave Carafe Brewer.
I don’t think it makes superior coffee but it is very easy to use and deal with at home.
The Chemex has been around over 80 years. It’s a single piece of functional glassware that makes great coffee.
Dishwasher safe and easy to clean
most are glass or white ceramic and if there is buildup or something going on, you'll notice.
This is a big one for me. I got tired of cleaning a machine. It was gross.
Thicker glass construction
The chemex is much thicker.
Easy to use for daily coffee making
I am wanting to upgrade my coffee experience.
Produces a different tasting brew with official filters
The papers are substantially thicker and heavier, and folding them may provide further differences in bypass.
Impressive for guests
I'll also always get the "omg this coffee is so good" comments despite my coffee making abilities being fairly average, I'm sure the pretty glass is doing the heavy lifting.
Produces a clean cup of coffee
I love the Chemex! It beautifully designed and produces a super clean cup
Some beans (especially light, flowery and delicate ones) shine like nothing else with the Chemex
Yea the Chemex produces a nice clean cup that will hit all the coffee notes
The weighted handle makes a nice difference!
Mild and less bitter coffee
I always expect the coffee on a Chemex to be more mild, slightly less bitter, and more relaxing.
Produces a delicate and light coffee
Exactly - it's a pourover with a very delicate mouthfeel.
Visually appealing design
Honestly just so damn aesthetically pleasing I went with it and haven't had any problems over the last year.
Satisfying brewing process
not really happy with the first cup i made but the variable seems to be great!
Control over brewing variables
There has to be a difference, otherwise they wouldn't be so popular, right?
The difference is that you can control all the variables like water temp, ratio, how slowly you pour, etc.
Produces a cleaner cup of coffee
That'll be my next purchase hopefully, but after reading all of these responses I'm heavily considering getting a Chemex!
Thicker filter means cleaner cup of coffee (less affected by the grinds and allows for more flavor notes).
Fun to use
Lets me honest though... using a Chemex is way more fun

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Not recommended for beginners
You can always buy it later once you get your pour over technique nailed down.
Confusion about coffee extraction time
The Chemex is specifically for slow extraction and longer brews.
Requires more attention and skill compared to machines
Why is pour over "better" than a machine? I understand that you have more control of where the water hits the coffee bed.
The technology is technically "there" - but no one has assembled it correctly, all in one place, for a price the average consumer is interested in.
A batch brewer is set-and-forget, a Chemex needs a bit of attention during the brew.
While Chemex isn't as versatile and bendable as something like a V60, it can still be manipulated far more than a batch/drip brewer.
Filters may impart a papery taste
Okay, so I take it the chemex filters add a minimal papery taste to the coffee?
More effort required compared to other methods
We eventually bought a drip pot setup on a timer and that made life so much easier to have coffee ready when it needed to be.
Can miss out on coffee flavors
You sometimes miss out on too much coffee goodness because of it.
Requires attention to brewing technique
Thanks for explaining. So a Chemex is actually more toward a corner of the spectrum so to say than pour-over.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Good water quality enhances brewing
good water is a game changer.
Discussion about water quality affecting taste
Never noticed the spout being dirty or gross in any way, but maybe I'm just too fussy and clean stuff too often to have noticed any buildup :P
Discussion about Chemex vintage models
Never made a pour over before, so any advice or direction would be great.
Enjoy.
Chemex as functional art
from a functional standpoint, they're a bit easier to make a good cup since the water doesn't pass through as quickly as a v60 for instance.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion about different pour-over techniques
Seems like the hario V60 is for the advance pour over technique methods but provides the best/complex coffee, chemex is moderate technique and kalita wave is most forgiving.
Mention of other pour-over brewers
I rotate between Chemex, V60 and Wave (as well as B75, Crystal Eye and blue bottle dripper) as my daily drivers and I second every single word in that answer.
Discussion on iced coffee brewing techniques
42g @300ml - how do you drink that? And what kind of coffee do you put in?
The paper filters out oils which changes the flavor enough people either like/dislike it.
Discussion about different coffee brewing techniques
Are the filters that much more expensive? What are you drinking right now and what’s your reasoning? Am I missing out with my Chemex?
The clarity and lightness of a Chemex is very relaxing.
Discussion about various coffee brewing methods
I'm not really sure what are the other advantages of Aeropress, Chemex, or pour-over.
It makes a nice, clean cup, and works best with lighter roasts.
I think you choose a method depending on the end result.
Comparison with other brewing methods like French press and Aeropress
They are not better, just different.
I make stronger brew and dilute it into two cups, it's doable, and coffee is really good.
Discussion about coffee brewing methods
I've been interested in Chemex for a while now because I've heard it can make some really good coffee and it actually looks like a fun process to me.
I think all pour overs methods are more similar taste-wise than they are different, so personally I'd go for a v60 or a Kalita Wave first since they're a lot cheaper.
Chemex is my favorite brewer hands down and I have about every brewer imaginable.
If batman made pour over coffee I'm pretty sure that's what he'd use lol.
Comparison with automatic coffee makers
While you work on your skills you may even get a worse cup of coffee from the manual brewer.
Discussion on coffee brewing techniques
What about the difference between Chemex, V60, and other Melitta-style pour overs?
The filter thickness, the shape of the equipment, the coarseness of the grind, and the fact that you have control over the ratio/temp/etc. makes Chemex significantly different.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion about automatic pour-over coffee makers
Guess the title says it all.
You mean a drip coffee maker?
Unfortunately this is an actual marketing term being used for drip machines with certain advanced features, like a bloom pause.
Maybe something like a Moccamaster? I got one and I’m extremely happy with it.
Discussion about different coffee grinders
It's not bad. It makes a little bit of a mess.
Don't waste your time and pony up for the Baratza Encore unless you're going for a really low budget setup.
Comparison with other pour-over methods
The filters make all the difference.
Curiosity about coffee brewing capacity
Wait, I feel like I must be misunderstanding "13 cups". Are you saying that thing makes 13 cups of coffee at once?
Advice on coffee brewing variables
Variables, to me, go in this order with the first being the most important
Comparison of Chemex and Moccamaster convenience
Advantage of moccamaster is the time you save boiling water.
The Moccamaster is awesome as a set and forget brewer.
Comparison of pour-over methods and results
I also didn't care for French press results, but I used to use one of the little Vietnamese style ones that sits right over the cup, and that always came out delicious.
Coffee storage tips for maintaining freshness
your coffee will go stale faster in sunlight, in a clear jar, in large amounts, and with a lot of air in the container.
Inquiry about the source of mugs
They look really nice.
Inquiry about coffee kettle recommendations
Awesome! What kettle do you use? Do you know if the bonavita variable temperature one I mentioned is any good?
I have the same kettle and Chemex. I love both.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about cleanliness in drip machines
The thought of drinking machine coffee just … no. It’s honestly one of the few things that genuinely grosses me out lol.
I never had any goo build up in my pour over machine... Where would it come from?
The water tank gets gross because you can't really clean it effectively in a lot of cases.
Jealousy towards beautiful coffee stations
All the people on this subreddit with beautiful coffee stations, I shake my fist at you in jealousy.
