The Deuter Kid Comfort Child Carrier Hiking Backpack is designed for parents who want to take their children on outdoor adventures while ensuring comfort and safety. This carrier accommodates children comfortably and allows parents to carry heavier loads with ease, making it ideal for hiking and extended outings. Consumer sentiment around the Deuter Kid Comfort is overwhelmingly positive, with users praising its comfort and durability. Many parents have noted that "the Deuter is great even up to 30+ pounds" and that it provides a comfortable fit on the hips, allowing for longer hikes without excessive strain. However, some users have expressed a desire for more storage options and better sun/rain protection, suggesting that while the product excels in many areas, there are aspects that could be improved. Overall, the Deuter Kid Comfort Child Carrier is highly recommended for those seeking a reliable and comfortable option for hiking with children. Its strengths in comfort, durability, and ease of use make it a standout choice in the child carrier market.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Comfortable for carrying heavier loads
the Deuter is great even up to 30+ pounds
Can a baby carrier (Deuter kid comfort) replace the usual free gate-checked stroller?
every step I did on my driveway was very unstable and wobbly.
I never thought about working up to that weight if you always carried them.
Comfortable for longer hikes
It really does take up quite a bit of space behind you so you really have to be aware in crowded spaces like elevators, stores, train stations and tourist attractions, especially turning around.
He was able to get a comfy seat by sitting on the top of the pack a little, and I held his knees on my shoulders.
The pro might be a tiny bit heavier as it also comes with a detachable backpack that you can put in front.
Good ventilation system
Helps get my son higher to see everything and can barely feel it. Incredibly comfortable considering you’re carrying a kid.
Comfortable and adjustable fit
I like our Deuter Kid Comfort, but to be fair, my hubby mainly wears it, though it is adjustable.
I got a Deuter and love it.
Good for long hikes
Once they're 25+ pounds, I prefer the simpler carriers that put the kids in more of a 'piggyback' position.
Durable and long-lasting quality
Still has minimal signs of wear.
mine is also 10+ years and has been through so much, yet still in great shape.
It has held up great with a ton of trips and minimal wear
it's still going strong
Comfortable fit on the hips
I love the way it sits on the hips, and keeps your back from sweating too badly!

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Lacks additional pockets and better sun/rain protection
I have a Dueter and if I could do it again I'd get the Osprey, a little more pockets and better rain and sun hood
Weight can accumulate significantly
Man the weight adds up. I did the sunrise to sunset loop in Bryce Canyon with my pack on, a 2 year old on my chest, and a 4yr old on my shoulders cause she was ‘too tired’.
Although it has all the bells and whistles for the kiddo and he seems happy and comfortable up there it is difficult for me to fit everything I feel like I need for the day for me and the kid in the backpack.
Kids can get too hot in the carrier
Having a light pack really helps because the total weight is significant.
Risk of diaper rash from long periods in the carrier
If your pal is not potty trained watch out for serious diaper rash from too long in the carrier.
Lacks additional storage
The investment for the backpack trip was worth it.
Can be bulky for urban use
I’ve borrowed them for trips. IMO, This is one of those thing you definitely want to buy used.
Insufficient capacity for day hikes
I am struggling because this doesn't seem like enough capacity for even a day hike.
Shoulder straps may sit too high
The pack itself is comfortable, but I’m a little shocked at how much weight is on my legs.
So yes, you child is too small for that carrier right now.
Child may be too small for the carrier
So her legs will have to dangle, is that a bad thing?

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Experience with multiple brands shows both have strengths
Osprey version is great, not sure about others
We also have experience with the Osprey versions, great quality, comfortable, have worn them on multi mile hike trips with zero issues in the smokies.
Have used both and both are great. Longest I did with the Osprey was 17 miles . Solid comfort
Experience with multiple brands shows both have strengths.
We used an Ergo carrier and it worked much better for us.
Weight is a significant factor for comfort
I think it should be more a question of what weight.
Weight is the main factor, because a heavier child will feel more pressure in their thighs in the carrier.
Multiple brands offer strengths
We found this one to be the most adjustable and comfortable for our son and for us to wear.
Comparison with Osprey carrier highlights pros and cons
Deuter vs Osprey baby carrier! I am so torn between the two(Deuter Kid Comfort and Osprey Poco AG Plus)! They both sound great.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Shorter hikes can be manageable with a child backpack carrier
How long would I realistically use this thing? Until she’s 3? Maybe 4? Is she already too big?
i have a 14 month old child, was thinking of going for a 4 hour hike(with stops) using a child backpack carrier, do you think that an acceptable distance?
Suggestions for adding extra carrying capacity
They make hiking fanny packs with a lot of space, and you could maybe wear it in front as a counterbalance.
If you're looking to add weight, try and add it as close to you back as you can.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Traveling with the carrier requires careful packing.
Traveling with Deuter Kid Comfort Active Our family is taking a trip out west and need to bring a hiking carrier (the deuter kid comfort active) for our little one.
I wasn’t considered about damage, but not sure if that was correct.
I put our Osprey in a stroller bag and checked it and it did fine.
If you’ve got a big duffel, i say chuck it in there.
Preference for in-person fitting due to varying comfort
the Thule suits me much better.
Comparison with other brands
We preferred the Osprey because it fits us better.
Go try them on.
Overall pretty happy with it.
Experience with various carriers varies by child size and growth
Great pack, total capacity is 48lbs including the pack.
Alternatives to backpack carriers exist for older children
Piggy Back Rider worked for short hops when my kids were too big to need a backpack but needed a boost or break for a short while.
Importance of in-person fitting
You can just do what we did. Bring the kid into the store and stuff him into various carriers to try them out, then when he pukes all over one buy that one.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about using in crowded urban areas
Because I have back pain from using soft carriers, I plan to use a hiking carrier for the baby.
it's not larger than a stroller, so I don't think it would be considered rude.
I really like both if these features and I’m glad I got the Pro.
Personal experiences with different carrying solutions
Not the most comfortable for the parent, but the kid can have a better sleep than in the carrier.
