Snoop's Take

The Deuter Kid Comfort Venture Child Carrier Backpack is designed for parents who want to enjoy outdoor adventures with their toddlers. With features like a height-adjustable child seat and an ergonomic suspension system, it promises comfort and stability while carrying children on hikes. Consumer feedback highlights several positive aspects of the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture, with many users praising its comfort, especially for longer hikes, stating, "Deuter Kid Comfort has been amazing for us!" Users also appreciate the adjustable features that accommodate different body types, making it a suitable choice for both parents. However, some reviews note its bulkiness for urban use and that it may not fit all body types comfortably. Overall, the Deuter Kid Comfort Venture is highly recommended for families who enjoy hiking and want a reliable carrier for their children. Despite some concerns about size and fit, many users emphasize its durability and comfort, making it a worthy investment for outdoor enthusiasts.

Positive Feedback

I can’t imagine to be hiking like 10km with any of those ergonomic preschool carriers.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Good fit for varying body types
some of these packs fit better on tall people or on short people in general it's more about your comfort and they should all be fine for your child
Anyone have experience with these carrier backpacks? How comfortable are they and are kids fine sitting in them?
Comfortable for carrying up to 30+ pounds
echoing some other comments here, the Deuter is great even up to 30+ pounds
Comfortable for carrying children
How do people do this regularly on long and strenuous hikes?
We stopped using the carriers completely when they were 4.
There was still lots of room to adjust as she got older.
Good for gradual weight increase
I think the issue is you’ve tried to start carrying your child at a relatively late age rather than starting the child carrying as an infant, which would let you gradually build up to heavier weights as the child grows.
Came here to say exactly this! Hated frame carriers, loved my Lillebaby and Beco Gemini.
Good for hiking with a child
It really does take up quite a bit of space behind you so you really have to be aware in crowded spaces like elevators, stores, train stations and tourist attractions, especially turning around.
Comfortable for both parents
I like our Deuter Kid Comfort, but to be fair, my hubby mainly wears it, though it is adjustable.
Amazing for long-distance hikes
Deuter Kid Comfort has been amazing for us!
Good investment for long hikes
Baby loves being able to see stuff w/o overheating or being smashed against us in Ergo carrier.
Effective mesh suspension for cooling
and the mesh suspension that keeps my back a bit cooler than the other bags I see here.
Good for day trips with children
Mostly my Futura sees day trips carrying stuff for my young children and the occasional leisure trip though that’s less common recently.
Durable and well-loved brand
Deuter, as a brand, has more the hiking and mountaineering look rather than urban and business travel.
Good for carrying children comfortably
I have purchased the Deuter child carrier with 14 liter capacity.
Love that pack, do a short hike every day with the little one, and he sleeps in it on longer day hikes.
Effective load management with adjustments
They were not accessible with the pack on but carried a lot of extra volume well.
Comfort over long periods
Go for comfort.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Uncomfortable for longer hikes
I can’t imagine to be hiking like 10km with any of those ergonomic preschool carriers.
Less pockets and less effective rain/sun protection compared to competitors
I have a Dueter and if I could do it again I'd get the Osprey, a little more pockets and better rain and sun hood
Too big for carry-on dimensions
the dimensions are too big (in height) to come as a carry-on, and using it as a checked-in bag feels a bit of a waste as you can’t store much in it…
Not suitable for older toddlers
I felt much more balanced with a soft carrier, like my ergo, than a high carrier like the hiking ones.
My youngest is already two, so I wouldn’t have it for long.
Great pack, total capacity is 48lbs including the pack.
Too bulky for city use
Honestly as someone living in Japan with a small child (and we used to have a hiking carrier, but never brought it to Japan for this reason) I wouldn’t use it for daily around-town travel.
Potential height issues in public transport
While I don't see many around the city, it's not larger than a stroller, so I don't think it would be considered rude.
Not suitable for all body types
We preferred the Osprey because it fits us better.
My MIL has a Kelty and I like that one better.
Difficult to fit all necessary items for the day
although it has all the bells and whistles for the kiddo and he seems happy and comfortable up there it is difficult for me to fit everything I feel like I need for the day for me and the kid in the backpack.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for natural fibers in hot weather
Avoid bulky, heavily-padded polyester carriers and carriers with mesh (which is sweaty plastic- no thank you!).
Weight management is crucial for hiking
Man the weight adds up. I did the sunrise to sunset loop in Bryce Canyon with my pack on, a 2 year old on my chest, and a 4yr old on my shoulders cause she was ‘too tired’.
Yeah the total weight is a concern and hence posting here.
Weight is a critical factor for comfort in carriers
As a parent of two small children, both of which have grown at different rates, I think it should be more a question of what weight.
Weight is the main factor, because a heavier child will feel more pressure in their thighs in the carrier.
Discussions about different child carriers
Helps get my son higher to see everything and can barely feel it.
It is excellent quality & comfortable.
found this one to be the most adjustable and comfortable for our son and for us to wear.
Suggestions for adding capacity
They make hiking fanny packs with a lot of space, and you could maybe wear it in front as a counterbalance.
Good idea! Also, I would be able to get stuff out of the fanny pack without taking the pack off!
Inquiry for user experience with Deuter
I just ordered the Deuter KC pro. I'd like to know how you're liking yours so far.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Traveling with a backpack in a duffel bag is practical
the fit is tough. I’m not sure about gate checking as I’ve never done it before
I just tossed it in a big old EMS duffel bag that would accommodate it
If you’ve got a big duffel, i say chuck it in there
Using multiple carriers for different situations
I can do 8-10 miles that way without stopping.
Having a light pack really helps because the total weight is significant.
Usage of Deuter backpacks beyond hiking
I've a 20L Speed Lite that's my go to EDC and overnight bag and don't hesitate recommending it.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Airlines may check child carriers for free as strollers
Airline just assumed it was a stroller and took it for free.
I will put it in a stroller gate check bag and see what happens.
Comparisons with Osprey carriers
Osprey version is great, not sure about others
We also have experience with the Osprey versions, great quality, comfortable, have worn them on multi mile hike trips with zero issues in the smokies.
I have an Osprey Poco Elite I used on 2 kids, now 12 and 10 and since we now have a 2 year old and 5 month old, we bought a second carrier, the Deuter Kid Comfort Active for when we need to carry the 2 on the same hike
Building strength and endurance for carrying
My back used to be very sore with the onbuhimo but now I can put my 35 lb toddler in it and it’s heavy but doable for short walks.
My kids wouldn’t tolerate the carrier after about 2.5. Then they had another year of riding on my shoulders when their legs got tired.
Preference for different types of carriers
We used an Ergo carrier and it worked much better for us.
Testing in-store is recommended
Best hiking backpack carrier? I’ve never used one, but plan to do lots of hikes this summer as a family
I HIGHLY recommend going in person to try them on. They will all be adjustable to both of your sizes.
Different carriers may serve different needs
Piggy Back Rider worked for short hops when my kids were too big to need a backpack but needed a boost or break for a short while.
Experience comparing multiple carriers and their suitability
Does anyone have experience with both or either of these packs and have any input based on our needs and experience?
Maybe Osprey Poco premium!?
Overall pretty happy with it.
I was set on getting the Osprey poco or the deuter kid comfort, but when I tried them on they felt weird on the hips, whereas the Thule suits me much better.
Testing carriers in-store helps find the right fit
Need help choosing a Child-Carrier Backpack No text content
You can just do what we did. Bring the kid into the store and stuff him into various carriers to try them out, then when he pukes all over one buy that one.
People prefer to buy used child carriers
People buy them all the time and then never use them.
Preference for comfort in carrier selection
They both sound great. The Deuter seems to have the edge in comfort over the two but Osprey seems to win in every other category from what I've read.
Got carried away thinking about the what ifs.
Comparison with Osprey carriers
Once they're 25+ pounds, I prefer the simpler carriers that put the kids in more of a 'piggyback' position.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about using hiking carriers in urban areas
Is a hiking backpack style carrier okay for Japan or would it be considered rude to use that within the cities when we are not hiking because of its size.
Concerns about child comfort in carriers
If your pal is not potty trained watch out for serious diaper rash from too long in the carrier.
Deuter backpacks identified with German tourists
Deuter backpacks are used to identify German tourists abroad.
Brand perception in urban vs. hiking contexts
Using deuter and Vaude for Hiking and love them, but wouldnt wear them in the city as well :)
