What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great quality and comfort
Osprey version is great, not sure about others
We also have experience with the Osprey versions, great quality, comfortable, have worn them on multi mile hike trips with zero issues in the smokies.
More pockets and better sun/rain coverage than competitors
I have a Dueter and if I could do it again I'd get the Osprey, a little more pockets and better rain and sun hood
Lightweight and easy to carry
How do people do this regularly on long and strenuous hikes?
Helps get my son higher to see everything and can barely feel it.
Fits better for some users
We preferred the Osprey because it fits us better.
We're going to test both out at REI and see what works best for us.
Good for children up to 35 lbs
I think it should be more a question of what weight.
Good investment for outdoor activities
Has anyone ever used one of the child carriers (e.g. osprey poco, deuter kid comfort)? If so, was it worth the investment, how long was your child able to use it?
Got a Poco Plus recently for still very small baby < 1. Has been a fantastic investment so far.
The investment for the backpack trip was worth it.
Great for long hikes with children
It works better than a stroller in crowds and puts kiddo in a position where he can see easily.
Adjustable fit for different users
Back was adjustable so my husband and I could both carry it.
Great for short hikes
Child Osprey Poco Plus Backpack - recalled?? What the catch
I got a brand new one from Osprey over the holidays.
Previous models are solid for use
The plus has more cargo space.
Suitable for children up to 35 lbs
We have the Poco plus and love it.
Great for carrying weight comfortably
Absolutely love the Osprey Poco Plus! Got it used on Facebook to save some money, but it was definitely worth the buy.
Child enjoys being in the carrier
we both love it!
Can be carried on flights
Flying with a 9 mo old and the poco was AWESOME....we used it to carry him around the airport and as a high chair for lunch time/playtime.

Uncomfortable for some users
I originally went in looking at Osprey bc i see them on resale all the time, but it ended up being uncomfortable for me.
May not be suitable for all children
The catch is that they dont actually carry the child. An adult still has to carry the pack
Kids cry when you put them in there and spend 5 minutes adjusting the straps the first time.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about weight management while carrying a child
I'm currently considering the Osprey Poco Plus carrier, but 26L of storage just isn't enough to hold all of our gear.
Man the weight adds up.
Was wondering how much I could strap or hang from a hard structure.
Weight is a key factor for comfort
Weight is the main factor, because a heavier child will feel more pressure in their thighs in the carrier.
Preference for lightweight carriers over heavier options
Easier than a backpack for them to get on and off quickly and packed small.
General feedback about child carriers
I do not have kids, but I've seen people use them and they look fun.
There was still lots of room to adjust as she got older.
Discussion on adding capacity to child carriers
is 14 liters enough?!
They make hiking fanny packs with a lot of space, and you could maybe wear it in front as a counterbalance.
I would be able to get stuff out of the fanny pack without taking the pack off!
Love that pack, do a short hike every day with the little one, and he sleeps in it on longer day hikes.
Discussion about storage capacity and features
Got lots of great pockets and features but light on any bulky storage.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Using pack liners instead of covers
Pack liners are better than pack covers.
Suggestions for alternative rain protection
You might have better luck with an umbrella.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

Comparison with other brands
Solid comfort
Need to build strength gradually for carrying
You do need to work to to it! I also found a hiking stick useful at times to help with balance especially until I built up my core strength again.
My back used to be very sore with the onbuhimo but now I can put my 35 lb toddler in it and it’s heavy but doable for short walks.
Preference for soft carriers over frame carriers
We used an Ergo carrier and it worked much better for us.
Having a light pack really helps because the total weight is significant.
Front carrier is a good option actually, thanks.
Recommendation to try before buying
I see so many hiking backpacks, but don’t know what to look for/what’s best.
I like our Deuter Kid Comfort, but to be fair, my hubby mainly wears it, though it is adjustable.
Discussion on age limits for use
My youngest is already two, so I wouldn’t have it for long.
Advice to try carriers in-store with children
Bring the kid into the store and stuff him into various carriers to try them out, then when he pukes all over one buy that one.
Interest in second-hand purchases
People buy them all the time and then never use them.
Preference for trying carriers in-store
But you should be able to just get one pack that you can share with you and your partner since they are adjustable in size just find the one that works for both of you.
Comparison of Poco and Poco LT for older children
Are carriers like the Poco or Poco LT designed more for babies specifically or would it work for a three year old as well?
Consideration of price versus features
One of the things I like about the Poco is the little foot rests too, that allow them to almost stand up.
Concerns about bringing both a car seat and carrier on flights
Hmm, if that's the case then does that mean you can't bring both a car seat and carrier?

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Concerns about child's comfort in carriers
If your pal is not potty trained watch out for serious diaper rash from too long in the carrier.
Discussion comparing comfort levels between brands
They both sound great.
Go for comfort.
Concerns about resale value and usability
The "catch" is that when children outgrow them, they have no use
Exactly. We sold our Deuter child backpack for less than half what we paid for it.
Discussion on safety and fit for child carriers
Mostly I think these kinds of carriers are designed for young toddlers who are past the sensitive period for hip issues.
You do usually get a bit better seat than this though.
Discussion on different Osprey Poco models
I’m on the hunt for an osprey poco carrier for my 7 month old and am hoping to score a used one on FB marketplace.
I have the newer model of the Poco and my 20 month old likes it.
We found one secondhand but the removable daypack didn't come with it.
Concerns about child age limits for use
Best of luck. Both my kids noped out of being carried around 18 months.
