Snoop's Take

The Osprey Poco Child Carrier is a versatile and comfortable backpack designed for parents who want to take their little ones on outdoor adventures. This carrier features a built-in sunshade, multiple pockets for storage, and a deluxe child cockpit that ensures your child is secure and comfortable during hikes. Consumer sentiment around the Osprey Poco is overwhelmingly positive, with many users praising its quality and comfort, stating things like "Osprey version is great" and highlighting the carrier's durability for long hikes. Users appreciate the thoughtful design, such as the "sufficient padding" and ability to carry weight well, making it an excellent choice for hiking with small children. However, some feedback indicates potential fit issues for taller children and concerns about storage capacity for longer trips. Overall, the Osprey Poco Child Carrier is highly recommended for parents looking for a reliable and comfortable option for hiking with young children, as it effectively balances comfort, durability, and helpful features. Users have shared positive experiences, making it a standout choice in its category.

Osprey version is great, not sure about others

Positive Feedback

If your pal is not potty trained watch out for serious diaper rash from too long in the carrier.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great quality and comfort
Osprey version is great, not sure about others
We also have experience with the Osprey versions, great quality, comfortable, have worn them on multi mile hike trips with zero issues in the smokies.
Multiple pockets and better sun protection
I have a Dueter and if I could do it again I'd get the Osprey, a little more pockets and better rain and sun hood
Durable for long hikes
Solid comfort
Great comfort for carrying children
How do people do this regularly on long and strenuous hikes?
We stopped using the carriers completely when they were 4 (at that point it was just used when they got tired and we wanted to continue).
My back used to be very sore with the onbuhimo but now I can put my 35 lb toddler in it and it’s heavy but doable for short walks.
Useful for building strength while hiking
We used an Ergo carrier and it worked much better for us.
I also found a hiking stick useful at times to help with balance especially until I built up my core strength again.
Comfortable for long hikes
He was able to get a comfy seat by sitting on the top of the pack a little, and I held his knees on my shoulders.
Good balance with gear
Balances out my backpack great.
Comfortable fit for some users
We preferred the Osprey because it fits us better.
We're looking at the Deuter Kid Comfort ($320) and the Osprey Poco Plus.
Useful for children up to 3-4 years old
How long would I realistically use this thing? Until she’s 3? Maybe 4? Is she already too big?
I think it should be more a question of what weight.
Weight is the main factor, because a heavier child will feel more pressure in their thighs in the carrier.
Incredibly comfortable for carrying children
Helps get my son higher to see everything and can barely feel it.
Fantastic investment for hiking with small children
Got a Poco Plus recently for still very small baby < 1. Has been a fantastic investment so far.
Comfortable for both parent and child during use
Absolutely love the Osprey Poco Plus! Got it used on Facebook to save some money, but it was definitely worth the buy.
Been using one of these for the last 3 months since our son was 5mths (meant to use from 6mths but he's big for his age!) and we both love it!
Comfortable for taller users
Once they're 25+ pounds, I prefer the simpler carriers that put the kids in more of a "piggyback" position.
Great for long hikes
It’s been great!
Back was adjustable so my husband and I could both carry it.
Good for sharing between partners
Poco plus is awesome!
Solid older models
We loved it and the memories it helped create.
my 20 month old likes it.
Good consideration of heat retention in color choice
What kind of stains are you worried about exactly? I’d advise against the child eating messy things while riding on your back no matter what color you choose unless you want to be wearing that mess on the back of your head and neck also.
I was thinking about the sun and black retaining more heat as well but my friends said they probably put it into some consideration when making those colors.
Sufficient padding for children
The padding is sufficient.
Foot rests allow children to stand
One of the things I like about the Poco is the little foot rests too, that allow them to almost stand up.
Good structure for carrying children
We have the Poco plus and love it.
Carries weight well for hiking
It's bulkier than anything I've ever carried but it carries the weight really well.
Positive reviews from experts
This is a significantly better fit as compared to the ergo360.
Fit issues can be resolved with proper adjustments
My husband got ours fit for him at REI.
I believe the waist belt is meant to be relatively low.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Potential discomfort for the child
If your pal is not potty trained watch out for serious diaper rash from too long in the carrier.
Uncomfortable fit for other users
I got a Deuter and love it.
My MIL has a Kelty and I like that one better.
Potential fit issues for taller children
My child is 3 now, right before his birthday I carried him in a pack on my back up to Emerald Lake in RMNP, then through The Narrows in Zion.
Children outgrow the carrier quickly
The "catch" is that when children outgrow them, they have no use
The catch is that they dont actually carry the child. An adult still has to carry the pack
I love it. Got mine on a giant discount for resale and my kiddo loves a 1.5 hour hike, picnic lunch, 1.5 hour hike/nap on the way back.
Insufficient storage capacity for longer trips
Got lots of great pockets and features but light on any bulky storage.
Uncomfortable fit due to metal frame
The bottom of the pack is a metal frame which digs into the upper buttocks, making walking very difficult and painful.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Resale market for used carriers is active
Child Osprey Poco Plus Backpack - recalled?? What the catch
Exactly. We sold our Deuter child backpack for less than half what we paid for it.
I got a brand new one from Osprey over the holidays.
Inquiry about removable daypack options
Can anyone tell me if you can buy bags that zip onto the Poco premium?

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Different carrying methods exist for older kids
Piggy Back Rider worked for short hops when my kids were too big to need a backpack but needed a boost or break for a short while.
Suggestions for enhancing capacity with additional packs
They make hiking fanny packs with a lot of space, and you could maybe wear it in front as a counterbalance.
Good idea! Also, I would be able to get stuff out of the fanny pack without taking the pack off!.
I was always able to somehow squeeze into our carrier (about 20l capacity) even with more children for a day hike, or my wife can take suffient regular backpack.
If you're looking to add weight, try and add it as close to you back as you can.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Physical fitness required for using carriers effectively
Did you try with the one year old? How did that feel?
I felt much more balanced with a soft carrier, like my ergo, than a high carrier like the hiking ones.
Preference for different types of carriers
My youngest will be around 18 month old and I plan to use an Osprey Poco Plus to carry her and her gear.
Consideration of child comfort and needs during hikes
Definitely will be checking on the little one to make sure she’s not to hot/cold/uncomfortable/hungry/requires nursery songs
Preference for trying on carriers before purchasing
Best hiking backpack carrier? I’ve never used one, but plan to do lots of hikes this summer as a family
Did not know this was an option. Thank you!
I like our Deuter Kid Comfort, but to be fair, my hubby mainly wears it, though it is adjustable.
Testing carriers in-store is recommended
Bring the kid into the store and stuff him into various carriers to try them out, then when he pukes all over one buy that one.
Many people suggest buying child carriers used
People buy them all the time and then never use them.
Variety in child carriers exists, with different brands and models
My daughter on the other hand… I think I sold it or gave it away a year later.
Considerations between different brands
They both sound great.
Go for comfort.
Different brands may suit different needs
There are several other brands too you could check out Deuter and Kinder pack.
Exploring availability of used models
There are lots in my area that are listed, however I’m a little confused with the different types of osprey pocos.
Experience flying with the Osprey Poco as carry-on
Flying with the Osprey Poco
Hmm, if that's the case then does that mean you can't bring both a car seat and carrier? Well I gue
Flying with a 9 mo old and the poco was AWESOME....we used it to carry him around the airport and as a high chair for lunch time/playtime.
User anticipation for the product's effectiveness
I just bought this for my 9 month old hopefully it works for us
Seeking professional fitting assistance is recommended
Thank you, I did consider this but didn’t know if it was acceptable when we didn’t buy the carrier from the shop.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Challenges of carrying extra gear for unpredictable weather
I know there are other child carriers out there with more capacity but I have two issues:
Concerns about color staining
I really love the blue but am afraid that it’ll stain easily (dirt&food).
Concerns about children outgrowing the carrier quickly
Both my kids noped out of being carried around 18 months.
