Snoop's Take

The Gillette Fusion5 Razors for Men provide a versatile shaving solution with a razor and four blade refills designed for a comfortable and close shave. Featuring five antifriction blades and a lubrication strip, this razor aims to deliver an exceptionally smooth experience, making it suitable for daily grooming needs. Consumer sentiment about the Gillette Fusion5 is mixed, with many praising its effectiveness: "Fusion is a game changer in getting an absolute close shave." However, some users express concerns regarding the high cost of replacement blades, with comments like "the blades are really overpriced" highlighting a common frustration. Additionally, while many found it comfortable, others reported issues like razor burn, indicating a learning curve in technique for optimal results. Overall, while the Gillette Fusion5 Razors are recommended for their ability to provide a close and smooth shave, potential buyers should consider the ongoing costs of replacement cartridges and the varying user experiences regarding skin sensitivity and comfort.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Mild razor is sometimes preferable
It’s fairly ubiquitous and not terribly expensive.
BIC blades can be sharp and effective for some users
I have no problems with BIC. Sometimes they feel a little abrasive on the first go.
I do respect those blades, I have around 100 of them. Always sharp on the first shave, even sharper on the second one.
Ironically I used a BIC today and mentally told myself...boy if I had to pick one blade for life this would be it...
Smooth and close shave with practice
Only used for the shaving cream-soap-gell.
Comfortable shave experience for some users
What is better for shaving though? I have no issue with comfort.
Provides a close shave
Fusion is a game changer in getting an absolute close shave.
KCG blades are sharp and gentle
They are sharp but quite gentle.
i liked them.
Great shaver when it works
Great shaver when it works.
Great shaver when it works. Had (2) different ones, each lasted about 18-months before battery faili
Positive experience with the razor
Love mine, but blades are $$$
Cartridge razors are consistent and easy to use.
Cartridge razors are like fast food restaurants. Consistency and speed over quality.
Adequate for clean shaves with one pass.
I feel that they are very adequate at getting a clean shave, but they're also more expensive to use and, let's face it, less fun!
Provides a better shave than multi-blade razors
I'm so tired of disposable razors that only last for 2-4 uses before going dull and shredding my skin.
You get a better shave with the Sensor than with any 5 or 6 blade (how hilarious is that!) razor.
Best multiblade cartridge razor out there.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Gillette Sterling razor causes irritation
Got a Gillette Sterling. Have sensitive skin. Need blade suggestions.
The thread was about not-so-good shaves with Sterling DE razor. That it causes irritation.
SP black blades can lead to poor shaves
I would not recommend using SP blacks with that razor, even though Gillette sells it with those blades.
I still will not use Sterling everyday
Blades are overpriced
the blades are really overpriced.
Inconsistent quality of BIC blades
Bic sucks balls
Bics are super fantastic, but I have gotten two boxes of fake Bics before. They were horrible.
Shave not as close as cartridge razors
the shave isn’t nearly as close as the Mach5.
Learning curve for technique
Couple of thoughts.
Can cause razor burn or bumps
Many people get razor bumps or burn with the Fusion. Which is why they came out with the SkinGuard.
Gillette would love to have you believe that.
Perceived as overpriced
Personally, I find the new Gillette stuff to be overpriced.
Negative opinion about company direction
Gillette Has it all Wrong. It will be there Down Fall.
Blades felt dull and created resistance
probably has to do with having 5 blades too
Refills perceived as overpriced
The $20 refills were a complete turn off.
Replacement cartridges are expensive
Multiple blades are generally hard on the skin, and the replacement cartridges are insanely expensive.
Plus, they’re really expensive over the course of a year.
Preference for fewer blades
Razors with fewer blades are generally better than those with more blades as they're less likely to leave you with razor burn or ingrown hair.
Comparison with other brands
for a 5 blade razor id go for a schick hydro. Gillette fusion sucks.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Double edge safety razors are considered high-quality and durable.
Double edge safety razors are the pinnacle of shaving technology to the extent that cheap Chinese knockoff handles are BIFL.
Safety razor + blades is truly BuyItForLife! I switched several years ago.
Perception of double-edge safety razors
If you saw the double edge razor, you wouldn’t think it’s from Gillette because there is no big noticeable iconic text that they use for their 5 blades.
Modern blades fit vintage Gillette razors
Are you able to use modern blades in Gillette safety razors from the early 1900s? The blades seemed to have a more rounded shape back then compared to the rectangular blades of today
Yes. Modern blades were designed to fit older razors . The current design is due to the blade wars between Gillette and Probak.
The older blades were thicker than modern blades, but the overall shape is still the same. Modern blades will work fine in a vintage razor.
I have a 1906 3 piece Gillette. Modern blades work great in it.
Discussion on KCG blade quality compared to other Gillette blades
I am pretty certain the KCGs are rebranded Platinums.
there is a huge thread on this question over there with microscope photographs of various blades to compare them.
I'm not so sure, I used both and to me it seems the KCG last longer than the platinum, closer to the 7 o'clock SS.
The KCG is a platinum blade; the 7OC SS is not.
Curiosity about razor head designs
Thanks for the impressions of the razor Cosmo. That head looks very much like the DE-89 head.
Clarification on Gillette's manufacturing of double edge blades
Complete list of Gillette manufactured double edge razor blades Hey guys, I'm trying to put a list together of all the current DE razor blades that ~~Gillette~~ P&G makes or owns.
"Makes or owns" is a little unclear. I don't think Gillette makes any DE blades.
Since you seem to know what you're talking about, can I assume that all the PPI blades are the same?
Not even close. They are very, very different.
Discussion on blade coatings and their effects
Theoretically, this affects how smooth and durable the final product is.
Is one typically sharper or stronger than another?
Is there a best or is it skin type? There are also a yellow one, super 7?
As everyone says, you gotta try them for yourself and evaluate.
Discussion about the longevity of disposable razors vs. cartridge razors
I don't know of many steels that won't oxidize under those conditions.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on sustainability of safety razors versus disposable razors.
Sounds better and more sustainable.
Shaving cream vs gel discussion
What's DE stand for and if I use a shaving gel instead, do I have to use a brush with that too?
If it comes out of a can, tube. Then you don’t need a brush right away.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Using safety razors can be cost-effective.
I also use my grandpa's Fatboy, but I find it's hard to get a good shave on my head with it.
Safety razors are perceived as intimidating but are easier to use than expected.
It’s way more intuitive than it seems and as long as you don’t go sideways as you shave, you’re good
Discussion on blade recommendations and experiences
Laser Ultra. Mild & very smooth.
Willy and laser are smoother and less sharp than 7 o'clock sp.
Discussion on placement and availability of safety razors
Every time I go to a super market like Walmart or Target, the safety razors are on the bottom shelf and there's usually only one stocked.
Safety razors offer a better shave and cost savings.
You will get a better shave and diminish your reliance on disposable bulky plastic razors.
Switch to a safety razor! No plastic just razor blades
Double Edge shaving requires different preparation
Shaving with a DE is a skill.
It is normal to do a couple of passes with a safety razor.
Comparison of Gillette and other blade brands
I have thick hair, and I only shave every other day, so I need some **sharp** blades.
7'O Clocks Black, Nacet and Platinums are very similar if not the same.
One is made by PPI in Russia, the other by Gillette in India.
My favorite are Gillette super blue, not to be confused with the silver blues...I don't know if they are still produced, I got lucky and found an old pack.
Consideration of switching brands for cost savings
Cheapest place to buy Gillette razor reffils
Switching to another brand (Dorco) will yield much more significant savings than trying to find Gillette on sale somewhere.
Questioning the necessity of heated feature
isn’t rinsing your razor under hot water approximately as effective and way cheaper.
Exploration of the experience of switching from DE to cartridge.
Overall, I would say that this new Proglide isn't that bad. Pretty good shave, no tugging or pulling.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Safety razors can provide a better shave.
Honestly I thought the same and then I tried it and I’ll never go back.
User experiences with different blade brands vary widely
Today I shaved with BIC blades for the first time and got possibly the worst results with them.
They work great for me, feels super sharp like a Feather.
Bics were above average but not as good Feathers or Personna Lab Blues.
I've got to be the only one here who's had issues with the lab blues.
Concerns about using safety razors leading to cuts.
Tbh my experience was a lot of blood - especially when in a hurry.
Discussion on effectiveness of fewer blades
Fewer blades are better than more.
Fusion imo is the best and will remain to be the best close up shaver on the market today.
Variety of user experiences with safety razors
Cheaper and a better shave. And they aren’t hard to get used to.
I can almost dry shave with a Gillette multi-blade razors whereas with a perfect lather and heated safety razor I will almost definitely have some razor burn.
Discussion on razor business models and market practices
Gillette didn’t start moving towards the razor and blade model until after the patent on the Gillette Old expired.
It had to be something market practice related IMO.
Just wanted to say this is a great, well researched post! I’ll have to read that paper as soon as I
Wasn’t there a change in business model though, which is what their modern approach is all about. I
Interest in specific blade types and origins
I would expect the blades to be one of Gillette's own products out of Russia, most likely the Gillette Platinum since the box mentions a platinum coating.
Discussion on preference for safety razors over Fusion5
Would you say it’s closer, less close, or about the same in terms of smoothness?
