Snoop's Take

The Gillette SkinGuard Men's Razor Blades are designed specifically for men with sensitive skin, providing a comfortable shaving experience while minimizing irritation. Featuring a unique SkinGuard that protects the skin from blade contact, these blades ensure a smoother shave with reduced risk of razor bumps and burns. Users have shared positive experiences, noting that "Gillette SkinGuard razors have worked better than anything else I’ve tried," highlighting the effectiveness for sensitive skin and the comfort during use. While many appreciate the comfort and effectiveness of the SkinGuard, some users have pointed out concerns such as the high cost of replacement blades and the potential for irritation when paired with certain blade types. Feedback indicates that while the SkinGuard provides a comfortable and effective shave, it may not deliver the closeness experienced with traditional double-edged razors. Overall, given the positive reception from users with sensitive skin, the Gillette SkinGuard Men's Razor Blades are recommended for those seeking a gentle yet effective shaving solution.

Shaving with a DE is a skill.

Positive Feedback

I would not recommend using SP blacks with that razor, even though Gillette sells it with those blades.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Shaving technique requires skill and practice.
Shaving with a DE is a skill.
It can take a little while to get a very close shave as you did on a cartridge.
Shaves become smoother and less irritating over time.
after a few months now I feel like each shave got smoother and less irritating.
Comfortable shave with multi-blade razors
I haven’t cut myself with a fusion, I never get razor burn, razor bumps, feels goooood on the face, smoothest shave ever next to a straight razor, my cheeks feel baby butt smooth.
KCG blades are sharp yet gentle.
i liked them.
Smooth shave experience with no burns or cuts
Has anyone else used Gillette Skinguard? I switched to this razor and have had positive results with it.
Effective for sensitive skin
Gillette skinguard razors have worked better than anything else I’ve tried.
Using a DE safety razor will usually greatly reduce, if not eliminate, ingrown whiskers if you either shave one pass with the grain, or two passes.
Blades are less likely to clog
Blades fairly spaced out so they shouldn't clog much
Less painful compared to other razors
Being that razor blades are a no-go when it comes to carry-ons, I went to purchase the Gillette Guard on Amazon but accidentally ordered the SkinGuard.
Good for travel convenience
I've used the Gillette SkinGuard when traveling before. It worked fine.
Effective for sensitive skin with minimal irritation
Gillette Skin Guard saved me Maybe it was purely technique but after months of shaving with a DE I just couldn’t get a good shave without sacrificing my super sensitive skin.
Haven’t ditched the soaps!! definitely life changing
Comfortable shave experience
Its been a while since I shaved with it. i bought it once while travelling. It was a good comfortable shave, very close and irritation free.
The Guard gives an excellent shave, and its travel-friendliness is a bonus.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Irritation caused by using certain blades with the razor
I would not recommend using SP blacks with that razor, even though Gillette sells it with those blades.
The thread was about not-so-good shaves with Sterling DE razor. That it causes irritation.
I have no problems with BIC. Sometimes they feel a little abrasive on the first go.
Ironically I used a BIC today and mentally told myself...boy if I had to pick one blade for life this would be it.
Overpriced blades
the blades are really overpriced.
Razor bumps and burn reported with multi-blade razors
Many people get razor bumps or burn with the Fusion.
Cartridges may be discontinued
When I switched to DE shaving I found that DE shaving was just as good at avoiding ingrown whiskers but gave a better overall shave.
Not as close of a shave as DE razors
Even if it’s “milder” than a Mach 3, Mach 5 or whatever, it still doesn’t come close to giving as good a shave as a DE razor.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on blade recommendations for sensitive skin
Got a Gillette Sterling. Have sensitive skin. Need blade suggestions.
Laser Ultra. Mild & very smooth.
https://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/threads/best-general-use-strategies-blades-and-angles-of-attack.553536/
I tried this steep angle with **Sterling + SP black** combo for today's SOTD. First time, miraculously, I did not get any weepers with SP black.
Discussion on razor features and preferences
Gillette has razors, some 5 blade and one is double edged blade.
Gillette er Proctor and Gamble know where the money maker is.
It’s not a bad razor. Does the knurling kind of suck? Sure, but I’ve never dropped one.
Every time I go to a super market like Walmart or Target, the safety razors are on the bottom shelf and there's usually only one stocked.
Modern blades fit older Gillette safety razors
The blades seemed to have a more rounded shape back then compared to the rectangular blades of today
Modern blades were designed to fit older razors
The overall shape is still the same. Modern blades will work fine in a vintage razor.
Modern blades work great in it.
Variability in user experiences with different razor types
That’s just a blatant lie; I can almost dry shave with a Gillette multi-blade razors whereas with a perfect lather and heated safety razor I will almost definitely have some razor burn.
Discussion about the origin and branding of KCG blades.
I am pretty certain the KCGs are rebranded Platinums.
there is a huge thread on this question over there with microscope photographs of various blades to compare them.
I'm not so sure, I used both and to me it seems the KCG last longer than the platinum, closer to the 7 o'clock SS.
The KCG is a platinum blade; the 7OC SS is not.
Discussion about the type of blades included with the razor
I think the razor is quite pretty.
I would expect the blades to be one of Gillette's own products out of Russia, most likely the Gillette Platinum since the box mentions a platinum coating.
Discussion about ownership and production of Gillette's DE blades
Complete list of Gillette manufactured double edge razor blades Hey guys, I'm trying to put a list together of all the current DE razor blades that ~~Gillette~~ P&G makes or owns.
"Makes or owns" is a little unclear. I don't think Gillette makes any DE blades.
Since you seem to know what you're talking about, can I assume that all the PPI blades are the same?
Not even close. They are very, very different. I really like Gillette Silver Blues and Polsilver SIs, but Astra SPs - not so much.
Discussion on different blade coatings and their effects
Theoretically, this affects how smooth and durable the final product is.
Is one typically sharper or stronger than another?
Is there a best or is it skin type? There are also a yellow one, super 7?
As everyone says, you gotta try them for yourself and evaluate.
Discussion about Gillette's product lineage
Gillette's Skinguard is a remake of Gillette's own Sensor Excel razor.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Advice on using shaving cream vs gel.
If it comes out of a can, tube. Then you don’t need a brush right away.
Great, so could I use that same brush to use with an after-shave moisturizer or is the brush only for the shave cream/gel?
Mention of alternative shaving techniques
With a new skinguard against the grain, its perfectly clean, not a cut in sight.
Haven’t had a breakout since starting.
Transition to safety razors discussed
The only downside is that the cartridges are so expensive, and I feel like they do not last long.
With the technique that you gain from DE razor (and shaving soap/cream), you can virtually shave with any cartridge razor effortlessly.
Discussion on alternatives to cartridge razors
This seems like a waste when you can just buy a decent plastic safety razor.
Travel shaving tips shared
Because using anything but good stuff turns my neck into a bumpy red mess.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on switching to safety razors
Blades are a lot cheaper and of course steel.
Switch to a safety razor! No plastic just razor blades.
Discussion on sustainability of safety razors
Sounds better and more sustainable.
Discussion on the differences between safety razors and cartridge razors.
I like a smooth, close shave but the shave isn’t nearly as close as the Mach5.
DE shaving is a journey.
Pre-shave preparation tips discussed
I shower before shaving for pre-shave prep.
Comparison of KCG blades with other Gillette and non-Gillette blades.
They are also quite cheap.
They’re not bad blades though.
Discussion on switching to another brand for savings
What’s the place where I can buy fillets razor reffils for the cheapest price ?
Switching to another brand (Dorco) will yield much more significant savings than trying to find Gillette on sale somewhere.
Comparison to other Gillette razors
Once I changed this method, I didn't have any burns or red marks.
Discussion on finding the right shaving combination
Most of the best blades/razors/soaps/oils for me had mixed reviews.
Discussion on shaving techniques and products
Shaving with the grain never does much for me.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on blade performance variability among users
Today I shaved with BIC blades for the first time and got possibly the worst results with them.
They work great for me, feels super sharp like a Feather.
Bics and they were above average but not as good Feathers or Personna Lab Blues.
They tug more than I did in my teens.
Discussion on counterfeit BIC blades
The real ones are extremely sharp and smooth.
Discussion about blade performance variability among users.
I have thick hair, and I only shave every other day, so I need some **sharp** blades.
7'O Clocks Black, Nacet and Platinums are very similar if not the same.
You might want to take a look at another persons viewpoint.
My favorite are Gillette super blue, not to be confused with the silver blues.
Discussion on the effectiveness of fewer blades
Fewer blades are better than more.
Debate on the merits of safety razors vs cartridge razors
Cheaper and a better shave.
Discussion on the historical business model of Gillette
Gillette’s business model—both its actual business model and its supposed razors-and-blades model—faced real competition and strong limits.
It had to be something market practice related IMO.
Thanks!
Wasn’t there a change in business model though, which is what their modern approach is all about.
Interest in reviewing the razor's performance compared to other models
Initially I only saw the unboxing video pop up on YouTube and thought to myself, "I need the full Cosmo review, too".
Thanks for the impressions of the razor Cosmo. That head looks very much like the DE-89 head.
Discussion on the effectiveness of heated razors vs traditional methods
I think this razor does represent some interesting technological applications.
Great review.
