Snoop's Take

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is a prime lens designed specifically for Nikon Z series mirrorless cameras, offering a large aperture for exceptional photographic capabilities. This lens excels in low-light environments, allowing photographers to capture high-quality images with beautiful background blur thanks to its shallow depth of field. Users have praised its performance, noting, "The Z6II is one of the best cameras for low light photography," while also appreciating the lens's fast and quiet autofocus capabilities. Overall, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 is highly recommended for photographers seeking a versatile and high-quality prime lens for their mirrorless camera system.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Excellent low-light performance of Z6II
The Z6II is one of the best cameras for low light photography.
Z6II has been awesome so far as you say for low light photography.
Good autofocus advice for Z6II
the eye detect and eye tracking works pretty well.
High quality of captured shots
Very good shots, especially considering that you just acquired this camera! 👍
Amazing shots!
70-300 lens performs excellently with Z5
I’m a huge fan of my 70-300, that lens works great with the FTZ adapter.
Works really well.
Excellent quality of mirrorless lenses
If you can afford new lenses, Nikon Z is at or near the front of the pack.
The Nikon Z8 is the best bang for the buck hybrid mirrorless camera you can get.
Nikon Z series cameras are highly regarded
The Z5 is the 'bargain' full-frame camera.
No loss of autofocus speed or accuracy with FTZ adapter
The FTZ adaptor has no affect on AF speed or accuracy.
This. This is the answer you're looking for, OP!
there is zero loss of usability or quality.
The ftz is fine. No problems.
High quality video options on Zfc
I like the high quality video options on my Zfc too. I never used video before, but find that I quite enjoy it now that I have it so easily available.
Mirrorless live view enhances shooting experience
The mirrorless live view is a major gamechanger for me to swap from dslr to mirrorless.
Z50 is excellent for portraits and slower sports
I really enjoy shooting with my z50 it works very well for portraits and great for slower moving sports like baseball/softball.
24-70mm f/2.8 is highly recommended for versatility
Going to Nikon mirrorless, what lenses should I buy? Hey guys I need some advice, I’m currently prep
24-70/2.8 is an awesome lens.
I think the 24-70 2.8 would be the place to start.
that thing is such a beast.
Wide range of Z lenses available
No complaints here! 👍

Autofocus hunting issues reported
Strange, I’ve had my Zf hunt a bit even on single-point.
Sometimes the Zf still hunts for focus even in good light.
DX lenses are not useful for full-frame Z5
Those DX (aps-c/crop) lenses won’t really be any use on your full frame Z5.
Nikon's APS-C lineup is considered subpar
Nikon full frame mirrorless is now really good, their apsc lineup is meh at best however.
Weight of some Nikon mirrorless models can be a concern
if the OP is struggling with the weight of his D90 setup, the Z8 is not really the best option as it is in fact heavier.
Zfc feels impractical despite great looks
Wished the Zfc felt the same in my hands because it looks so cool, but did not feel practical.
Adapters may compromise handling
They're always a compromise and they change the handling of the whole camera.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about lens features and unique capabilities
It’s crazy good but requires more effort than usual to get the most out of it.
I definitely see some reasons to upgrade with something to compare it with.
Once you shoot that 35mm lens, you'll never look at the 50mm f/1.4 the same way again.
Personal experiences with different lens models
In my all-time top five (or heck, maybe top two) is the 85mm 1.8 AF-D.
A nikkor 50 1.4; a good one.
Discussion about the D800 and its value over time.
I'm not ready to go mirrorless just yet when I can still get shots like this for a fraction of the price.
The D800 is on my list of cameras I should have bought the day they came out.
Haha, this is exactly my story, too.
There's something with actually looking through the lens rather than at a screen that I can't describe.
Debate about professional camera definitions
if I were faced with that specific choice I'd choose the D500. I'm much more used to pro cameras, and the D500 is faster, has a better autofocus system, and has a deeper buffer.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on using old DX lenses with new mirrorless cameras
Way more fun than my Canon 6D to be honest.
The 50mm won't autofocus as mirrorless doesn't have the focus motor.
You will need a ftz adapter with which only the afs lenses will autofocus.
I would just start clean with new Z lenses.
Using old lenses with new mirrorless cameras
Are these lenses worth using on a mirrorless?
My point being, you use what you have and upgrade as you go along.
if you have them, and they work, then yes they are worth using.
Discussion on the usability of legacy Nikon lenses with FTZ adapter
I'm wondering about whether or not folks are satisfied with the performance and speed of the adaptor for legacy Nikor lenses.
Discussion on adapting vintage Nikon lenses
I am just wondering if it’s worth it to specifically buy a Nikon camera to fit the lenses I have, or do you think those old lenses won’t be much use at all?
That f1.2 will make for a great portrait lens on an aps-c camera.
The zFC would be a perfect match, its designed to look just like the Nikon FE and FM.
That nikon 50mm 1.2 is still worth enough to get a decent used camera body for it.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on lens pairing with Z6II
That should be good combo for a general zoom lens and a prime lens.
Discussion on camera gear upgrades improving photography
New gear definitely makes taking pictures easier and in focus.
Perception of great deals on photography equipment
This is an insane deal. Thank you so much for sharing.
Clarification on refurbished camera details
It's a lot of camera for $1,000 if the Z7 is your jam.
Discussion on lens compatibility and performance
But the Nikkor 70-300 yes, mine works brilliantly on my Z5 with the FTZ-II adapter.
Discussion on the necessity of CFe for high-volume photography
CFe is a big quality-of-life upgrade for anyone who shoots a lot of photos at once.
I'd rather have a slightly wider body if it meant at least one slot was CFe.
SD cards, IMO, are a durable workhorse.
They are damn expensive - and to me that camera is not aimed at professionals.
Confusion around camera pricing
I'm new and I don't understand what dictates the pricing.
General advice on starting lens choices
I was thinking the same thing, thanks for the input!

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on lens quality and improvements
The 28mm F2.8 AI-S will blow your Series E 28 out of the water completely.
I used the 28mm series E for years, but it’s really garbage. Ha!
Personal experiences with transitioning from DSLR to mirrorless
I'm thinking to go fully Nikon mirrorless and sell my Sony or leave Nikon altogether and stick with Sony, I love both systems!
Nostalgia for older camera models like the FM2
My favorite camera of all time is my FM2, so I love this design.
Discussion on transitioning from DSLR to mirrorless
I'm looking for a more compact camera to take traveling and also for street photography.
Personally, I think the upgrade was well worth it and did so. I've had zero regrets about moving to mirrorless.
