Snoop's Take

The Nostalgia Electric Ice Cream Maker is a vintage-style appliance designed to create homemade soft serve ice cream, frozen yogurt, or gelato in just 20 minutes. With its user-friendly design and the ability to make unique flavor combinations, it offers a delightful ice cream experience for families and hobbyists alike. Consumer feedback has highlighted the Nostalgia ice cream maker as a great entry-level machine for those new to ice cream making, with one user stating, "I have this model for the price, it is a great entry to ice cream making." However, some users have encountered challenges, particularly with calibration issues and the positioning of ice cream sticks, leading to inconsistent results. Many reported that the machine's stick inserter is not timed correctly, impacting the quality of the ice cream produced. Overall, while the Nostalgia Electric Ice Cream Maker has its drawbacks, it is still recommended for anyone looking for an enjoyable and fun way to make ice cream at home, particularly for beginners who are willing to experiment and troubleshoot as needed.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Great entry-level ice cream maker
I have this model for the price, it is a great entry to ice cream making.
I put my empty ice cream maker bowl in the freezer last night in preparation for finally breaking it in.
Most the time I can get it to make ice cream, but it's usually still softer than I'd like, and at least one time it didn't really work at all.
User-friendly for hobbyists
My old ice and salt machine has never had a problem with anything I've tried to add into the ice cream.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Ice cream sticks are not positioned correctly
Ice cream machine that never puts sticks right
It‘s even the same side, it‘s left, right, left, right…
Yup, the treats are coming down in pairs. Sticky is consistent.
It actually looks like the ice creams aren't lined up consistently
Calibration issues with the machine
It’s probably not calibrated correctly
The stick inserter doesn’t appear “smart”, so that means the issue Is upstream. It is definitely a timing or calibration issue with the machine that creates or places the ice cream on the trays.
Too far apart. Or the machine hasn't been calibrated correctly
Its not the creams fault, the shooter is just not timed correctly.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion on the mechanics of the machine
Its likely there are two extruders further up the line and they got placed too close together after maintenance.
Probably set for the spacing between two boxes when it's between two Popsicles in the same box.
I reckon it’s more like the ice creams are not placed right by the previous stage.
In engineering, this kind of problem can be incredibly frustrating.
Discussion on the mechanics of freezing
This is basically a heat transfer problem. You want the bowl as cold as you can get, since that’s the only thing freezing your mix.
Everything should be as cold as possible, your bowl might be ready if your mix is cold.
Obviously this is a thermo dynamics question. And obviously you need to keep the freezer bowl in the freezer until it’s frozen solid.
Unexpected twist on nostalgia with ice cream truck
What a waste of money.
That ice cream truck is definitely not the nostalgia trip you expected! 👀😱
Discussion about childhood ice cream-making experiences
The mysterious origin of upside down Big Wheels and Ice Cream.
I know that older ice cream makers were hand cranked.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Humorous remarks about ice cream placement
They are called ice creams , hope this helps
Not iced yet 😉
Tips and techniques shared for making caramel
Once it hits the target temp, dump cream in it and stir until mixed.
Is that sorta like butterscotch?

Discussion on ice cream makers in general
Best home ice cream maker? Hey guys! I'm looking at all the ice cream makers and feeling overwhelmed with choices...what is the best machine for a newbie with kids? Thaaaanks!
I was gifted a Cuisinart ICE-21 as my first ice cream maker. It's been great and suited most of my needs.
Agreeing with the others that the Cuisinart ICE-21 (or even ICE-20) is a great place to start.
Humorous anecdotes about cooking mishaps
enameled cast iron Dutch ovens that I’ve sacrificed to the cause.
I do sugar, cream, butter, salt all at once and cook to the temperature I need.
It’ll be quicker if you use granulated white sugar with the small crystals.
Big crystals
Discussion on churning times and techniques
Makes for a shorter churn.
You will always struggle with a freezer bowl.
Comparisons with other ice cream makers
I've been using it for the last two years and made ice cream through summer where it does get warmer.
I was very impressed with the nostalgia maker at first use, after churning the ice cream was actually harder than what I typically get from the cuisinart bowls.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on ice cream making methods
Has anyone used the machines that use ice and salt? The more popular ones are the Nostalgia brand.
I will save my money then. The machines that are usually recommended here are over my budget and the ice and salt machines are so cheap but it seems that in the long run I would be wasting my money.
It's worth checking your local thrift stores to see if they have any. I've seen a couple Cuisinarts at Goodwill for just a few bucks.
Having never used the newer ice cream makers you're talking about, I can only say good things about the traditional method.
Discussion on challenges of making caramel
Yes making caramel is hard but it shouldn’t be that hard.
This is very practical guidance.
Honestly a good and funny review
I make the burnt sugar.
Concerns about ice cream consistency related to batch size
I don’t think the temperature will be an issue if you have enough salt and ice.
