What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Convenient no pre-freezing feature
Cuisinart Ice 100 or Whynter ICM 200ls I can't decide which one is better to get any advice?
We have a couple Whynters (we make a lot of ice cream) and they've been great. Makes ice cream with a great consistency and being able to make ice cream without having to freeze the bowl the night before is really nice
Produces delicious ice cream
It takes about 25 minutes to make some delicious treats!!
It’s the perfect starter machine if you have freezer space to store the bowl.
Multiple bowls for continuous use
no complaints either.
Makes excellent ice cream and frozen treats
I got a whytner last summer and it makes excellent ice cream and other frozen treats.
I have a Whynter and absolutely LOVE it, but I make and sell ice cream as a side gig.
Highly praised in reviews and videos
I am curious if you have had a different experience?
Removable bowl for easier cleaning
Non removable bowls are usually better as the cooling coils have better contact with the bowl, removing heat more efficiently and reducing crystal size.
I have two Whynter ice cream makers and love them. I don't think I'd ever buy another brand.
Compact design saves space
I do like the less space of the Whynter.
The creami is really really loud. Really loud.
Highly praised in reviews
I’m using the ICE-100 and love it.
Produces great consistency in ice cream
Each batch comes out smooth and consistent.
Dependable workhorse for heavy use
I've had one 3-4 years, use it heavily until Covid came along. Wonderful workhorse, dependable!
Improves ice cream texture and consistency
No more icy or too hard batches, and I can control more closely how much overrun I get.
Self-cooling feature eliminates need for pre-freezing
Overall, I love it and it’s worked perfectly for me for over a year.
the mechanism is the same for expensive machines as cheap ones, you just don’t have to freeze the bowls in advance
High-quality design and performance praised
I’m happy with my Whynter 200LS, but I found the reviews on icecreamscience.com super valuable to read.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Considered the least capable compared to others
The whynter is the least capable of the three so I would return it.
Takes a long time to freeze ice cream
Recharging an ice cream maker: is it possible? We have a Whynter ice cream maker that takes a ridiculously long time to freeze ice cream.
Initial setup can be intimidating due to horror stories
I think one of the things that is scaring me is how so many people have posted horror stories that they got their machine home and it didn't work or it worked a couple of times and died.

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
Discussion on low-fat ice cream recipes
cream vs whynter ice cream maker for low fat ice cream I have just ordered a Whynter compressor based ice cream machine, and wanted to use recipes i had seen for the Ninja Creami.
I have both and love both but if you want the low fat options the creami makes it infinitely easier.
have you had any luck with low fat on a compressor maker? would xantham gum not be enough to keep it creamy?
I don’t have one, but if I wasn’t planning on making normal ice cream recipes, I’d get a creami.
Discussion on ice cream recipes
The creami is a very different type of ice cream maker.
Do you want to stick to traditional ice creams / froyos, or do you want to mess around with low fat/low sugar/high protein concoctions?
Discussion on alternative recipes and tips
I like it. I’m new to ice cream making.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Price comparisons with other brands
the motors leave something to be desired with power, or the compressor doesn't get cold enough and you're doomed to a life of soft serve.
Comparisons between different ice cream makers
they all seem great but I'm having trouble making a final decision between them.
the difference in the final product is very noticeable (super smooth and much more consistent texture throughout), as well as the user experience (length of time to churn, noise, and least importantly, aesthetics)
Discussion on pre-chilling the mix for better results
If you have a Whynter ICM200LS, I have a question Do you set the machine to cooling only before you pour the mix in and change to the ice cream setting?
You want the mixture to be as cool as possible, so refrigerate overnight and put it in the freezer for 15 minutes before churning or until it's as cold as it can be without getting icy.
I get best results with 720ml of base becoming 1lt of ice cream once churned.
I chill my mix in the freezer for 2 hours and set the Whynter up to run the chill cycle, after it chill to -14 I stop it and pour in the mix quickly and switch it to turn.
Discussion on different Whynter models
Is there a difference between the models
I think the only difference is that the 201SB is an upright model so it takes up less counter space.
Comparison with other brands in the mid-range category
Whynter is probably the best of the mid range (breville, Cuisinart, delonghi)... Musso Lello and Nemox is next level up.
Discussion on preferences for different ice cream makers
I am incredibly fortunate. Not only did they buy me out, they donated to the fund as well.
There's no point in buying something twice, so when I bought in, I bought Musso.
Discussion on ice cream maker types and preferences
Good overall Ice Cream Maker? So starting out and looking for a decent to very good ice cream makers.
Definitely go with a freezer-bowl style machine for your first ice cream maker.
You can ‘hack’ it for better ice cream by putting plastic wrap on top then covering it with a large ice pack while it’s churning.
For included compressor ones I’ve used - can’t go wrong with the Lello musso.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on ice cream overrun rates
I'm specifically looking for a sub‑$300 machine that will produce smooth ice cream/custard with lower overrun.
It’s subjective based on individual opinions. I’ve had all 3 and the ICE100 makes on average, 20% with very good consistency ice cream.
Personally, I can highly recommend the Cuisinart BCU 100. It makes fantastic ice cream.
The page compares the icm 15 and ice 100. Scroll down to the, "But how does the ice cream compare?!" section and it states that the ice 100 has 36% with the ice cream dasher and 19% with the gelato dasher.
Discussion on potential issues affecting freezing performance
Cleaning those coils is a regular maintenance task for anything with refrigerant, if you want it to last.
That definitely makes sense. This thing was purchased brand new and has always been slow to freeze.
Try putting some glycerol or alcohol between the bowl and the freezing element, this should speed up the freezing time.
