Discussion around electric kettle speed compared to stovetop
It takes roughly twice as long to boil water in an electric kettle in NA than in Europe.
And electric kettles still seem insanely fast in the US compared to heating water on the stove.
I get pissy when it takes longer than 2 minutes for 1.7litres.
Now if you have a plug-in induction cooktop, or your stovetop is as powerful as your electric kettle, then there won’t be a difference.
General comments on kettle usage and efficiency
I've tried it and induction boils at the same time as a kettle (since they're both operating off the same amount of voltage).
For pasta I usually fill the pot halfway and start it heating to boil and turn on the kettle at the same time - they’ll both boil at the same time and I’ll add the kettle water to the pot then add the pasta.
It's worked like a charm and I don't regret it.
Price justification for higher-end kettles
It’s expensive because it has 1-degree temperature increments and is the only kettle I know of that goes low enough for gyokuro.
Discussion about kettle availability in different countries
Thank you! That kettle looks promising at first google.
Discussion on electric kettle recommendations
Looking for recs on a BIFL electric kettle.
You can replace the cheaper one much more easier even if it breaks.
The Amazon kettle is still going strong btw.
Do you have a link??? Pleaseeeee
Discussion about kettle maintenance and cleaning
Is this mold or rust forming in my electric kettle? Safe to use still?
Why did I let myself worry so long about this haha I have vinegar sitting like 2 feet away from my kettle 😂 thanks again.
Do I need to try with vinegar or something?
Vinegar works best. Happens to my kettle quite often.
Discussion about cleaning methods for electric kettles
It always grows back after I boil water in it.
You certainly don't have to be grossed out.
I find it makes my lighter flavored teas taste funny.
Pour vinegar and water together (50-50 is fine, play around a bit if you want) up to at least half capacity.
Comparisons to other electric kettles
Whats the difference between these two electric kettles? These two look similar and are around the same price.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about alternative electric kettles and tea makers
Electric kettle that has NO plastic inside/exposed to heating? My dad uses a steel stovetop kettle he’s had for decades, that has had the spout opening mechanism broken for years for which he rigged up a DIY replacement that makes it super easy to burn yourself pouring.
I give you the Turkish Tea Maker: https://sakiproducts.com/products/tea-maker This thing is pretty great, we’ve had one for over a year and it’s been completely trouble-free.
A samovar! It's also part of the Russian tea tradition. They are excellent for large or long gatherings.
Hey this looks cool! Is it double-walled/insulated?
Discussion on the significance of CA Proposition 65 warning
those have unfortunately become rather meaningless—there is no penalty for putting a warning on a product that doesn't need it
General praise for Fellow brand kettles
I've had my Fellow kettle for years and it still looks great and functions marvelously.
Discussion about the safety of materials in electric kettles
Modern clear glass is chemically neutral with all substances. It won't leech anything.
if you leave the water boiling for too long, heat will transfer directly to the glass (as water cannot get hotter than 212F) and potentially shatter it, so pay attention.
SECURA™-brand electric kettles are have 100% stainless interiors, no plastic in contact with the water, and use trusted STRIX™-brand temperature controllers.
Fellow has a silicone seal around the temp sensor in the water, so not 100%.
Discussion about plastic materials used in kettles
I was thinking of picking that one, honestly they look re-branded from one another on closer inspection...
