What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Durable and functional design
Mine is 6 years old and works fine. Easy to clean, low profile so hard to knock over.
I have been using the 40996 multiple times daily for over a year and it has held up like a champ.
The temperatures tend to end up a little higher than what the presets show you but that's easy to work with.
I haven't had any issues with it yet.
Fast boiling time
My Mega Chef electric kettle just died at exactly the 3 year mark.
Durable and long-lasting performance
kettle still going strong and I use it several times a day
we’ve had this kettle for about 10 years and it’s still going strong
Got a cheap Hamilton-Beach at Walmart many years ago for something like $20. It's still going strong.
I have the Hamilton Beach 1.7L Electric Kettle. I've had it for four years, I use it multiple times a day and it still works as well as the day I purchased it.
Adjustable temperature feature is a nice quality of life addition
Kettles just boil water so they don’t need to be fancy, the adjustable temperatures is a definitely a nice quality of life feature though.
Budget-friendly option for beginners
The Hamilton-Beach Glass Electric Kettle is a good budget-friendly option for beginners, offering basic temperature control at a reasonable price.
Cordless design for ease of use
Can anyone recommend a decent electric kettle that works on a college budget? I can't have hot plates in a dorm, so that rules out a regular kettle.
Thanks. Does it take up much space? It's nice that it is a cordless one as well.
Compact size, doesn't take much counter space
It takes up less than a square foot of space.
Affordable option in its price range
because it is quite affordable, and I really like the aspect of being able to heat the water to specific temperatures.
It's hard to beat the Hamilton for that price range. Mine is pretty great, the only real annoyances are the really short cord that you're supposed to unplug after use.
Quick and easy to use for busy mornings
It's way below the 200 bucks you mentioned but in no way 'average'.
Fast boiling capability
It seems as though every kettle on Amazon has many reviewers complaining about rust, leaks, shutting off when lifted, etc.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for stainless steel kettles over plastic
I'm also seeing a lot of transparent glass-based electric kettles which look really cool because you can see the water boiling.
Modern clear glass is chemically neutral with all substances. It won't leech anything.
Both glass and stainless steel would be fine. A lot of people prefer glass due to it not leeching anything and usually being plastic free on the inside.
Concerns about the materials used in kettles
otherwise pretty much safe they look.
Ottoni Fabricca sell high-end 100% metal electric kettles.
General discussion about electric kettle options
I don’t prefer electric kettles but I need one for convenience in my home office.
Bonavita gooseneck is by far my favorite kettle. Fast heating, excellent pour, fair price.
Discussion about programmable features in kettles
I can't seem to find an electric kettle that I can set to heat at a specific time for less than about $200, which is awfully frustrating since it's an incredibly simple/basic feature.
Hamilton Beach has this one with no app: https://hamiltonbeach.com/hamilton-beach-professional-digital-kettle-41028
Inquiry about kettle whistling feature
Does it whistle? I would like to use it like a back up alarm too

Discussion about kettle preferences and usage
It has worked really well for me, plus the yuzamashi can double as a gong dao bei.

Preference for cheaper kettles over expensive options
It almost always works not to spend money on the most expensive item.
Discussion about cleaning methods for kettles
Is this mold or rust forming in my electric kettle? Safe to use still?
Why did I let myself worry so long about this haha I have vinegar sitting like 2 feet away from my kettle 😂 thanks again.
Do I need to try with vinegar or something?
Vinegar works best. Happens to my kettle quite often.
Preference for smaller and cheaper kettles
I could’ve sworn you were describing a smaller version of my kettle but mine is marked Filtaba and goes up to 1.7L.
Discussion about electric kettle options
Something that works acceptably in the US might be considered trash in Europe.
General discussion about cheap electric kettles
How shitty or non-shitty are Wal-Mart-y electric kettles over time?
Discussion about alternatives to Hamilton Beach kettle
I think I'll agree with /u/jclim00 that the Hamilton Beach is probably the best in that price range.
I have been using this kettle for the last three years and can't recommend it highly enough.
Cuisinart - awesome. Does temps and steeping times.
If youre serious you should consider the zojirushi water heater
Discussion about alternative electric kettles and water boilers
it's fantastic. If you forget to unplug it, no big deal, you'll have hot water in the morning.
I absolutely love it.
Discussion about alternative electric kettles
The Cuinsart is still my fav for day to day use. It is fast with the presets, keep warm, and boil protection.
It's expensive, but check out breville. I have had mine for over 6 years and it's been amazing.
I love the Bonavita variable temperature goose neck kettles and have been using it in my daily tea drinking as well as my tea business, so it gets put through the wringer.
I have the Cuisinart with the multiple temperature settings, and that thing totally rocks.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about electric kettle longevity and reliability
It's worked like a charm and I don't regret it.
The Amazon kettle is still going strong btw.
my Amazon Basics kettle lasted less than four years before the lid broke.
Discussion about boiling water safety and materials
Wrong. SECURA™-brand electric kettles are have 100% stainless interiors, no plastic in contact with the water, and use trusted STRIX™-brand temperature controllers.
Fellow has a silicone seal around the temp sensor in the water, so not 100%.
Yeah that's such a bummer, do you think the o ring used there is safe in boiling water?
That is true, I forgot about that. It's like that with 99% of electric kettles with temperature sensors.
Concerns about electric kettle quality and longevity
It seems like every kettle I find on the internet is made in China and has terrible reviews.
ensure you descale, increases lifespan.
Preference for alternative brands and features
Still making a perfect cuppa.
I do wish the water capacity was a tad higher for two big cups of coffee.
