What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Fast boiling capability
This, I have a kettle from Amazon that boils water in 2 minutes. That's way faster than my stove.
Yea my electric kettle is half the time than boiling on stove at full temp.
I am all about function and smaller form factor as well as value: Hamilton Beach is a workhorse.
Yep, I love this one. Super simple, no buttons or settings.
Auto shutoff feature
Speed doesn’t matter to me.
Kettles are just very fast and convenient as they also auto-shutoff.
Convenient and easy to use
But frankly the 120v ones are so fast anyways.
And it just takes a minute to reboil it if I get back to it soon after.
Preference for glass over plastic
I'm also seeing a lot of transparent glass-based electric kettles which look really cool because you can see the water boiling.
Both glass and stainless steel would be fine. A lot of people prefer glass due to it not leeching anything and usually being plastic free on the inside.
I have a Cosori glass one and a Hamilton Beach stainless one. They were both moderately cheap and work well.
Aesthetic design with blue glow
Same blue light around the base, also a workhorse, all glass and metal for the water chamber.
Safe with auto shutdown
Safe with auto shutdown and easy to use.
Affordable alternative to competitors
The Hamilton Beach looks like a clone for half the price, so that's worth considering.
Durability and performance over time
I have been using the 40996 multiple times daily for over a year and it has held up like a champ.
Works well and reliable performance
The temperatures tend to end up a little higher than what the presets show you but that's easy to work with.
I haven't had any issues with it yet.
Good budget-friendly option for beginners
for a beginner? I've been wanting to get into this hobby but I don't want to spend 150-200 Canadian dollars on something more fancy just in case I end up not following through with this.
The Hamilton-Beach Glass Electric Kettle is a good budget-friendly option for beginners, offering basic temperature control at a reasonable price.
Nice quality of life feature with adjustable temperatures
Kettles just boil water so they don’t need to be fancy, the adjustable temperatures is a definitely a nice quality of life feature though.
Durability over time
Still works great.
Cordless design for easy serving
Can anyone recommend a decent electric kettle that works on a college budget?
Thanks. Does it take up much space? It's nice that it is a cordless one as well.
It has a cord from the base, but the kettle itself is cordless and disconnects as easily as just lifting it off the counter.
Durability and long-term performance
It's still going strong. Your mileage may vary, but at about 1/4 the price of a Bonavita, who cares?
I've had it for four years, I use it multiple times a day and it still works as well as the day I purchased it.
Affordable for the quality
because it is quite affordable, and I really like the aspect of being able to heat the water to specific temperatures.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Preference for traditional kettles
I have kept the stove kettle my grandmother gave me when I moved into my first apartment because I just think that the kitchen looks unsightly without a stove kettle, but the Cuisinart electric is all that ever gets used.
Preference for functionality and smaller form factors in kettles
I don’t prefer electric kettles but I need one for convenience in my home office.
Preference for programmable features in kettles
The real win is the programmable temp on the 40996.
Desire for programmable start feature in kettles
I can buy a $30 coffee maker from Mr. Coffee that that can do this.
Discussion on kettle features
Hamilton Beach has this one with no app.
Inquiry about kettle whistle feature
Does it whistle? I would like to use it like a back up alarm too
Discussion about kettle longevity and materials
Aluminum kettles are definitely not BIFL.
Discussion about electric kettle performance
I use ours daily, multiple times for tea, and for fast boil during cooking.
I just boil water…nothing fancy for me!
It’s still going strong: https://www.breville.com/us/en/products/kettles/bke820.html?sku=BKE820XL

Hidden Hero Hacks

Unexpected tricks and side‑door uses you’ll love.
General discussion about kettle brands and their features
Bonavita gooseneck is by far my favorite kettle. Fast heating, excellent pour, fair price.
Discussion about kettle recommendations
I went down a rabbit hole and like the look and reviews I'm seeing for the Fellow Corvo but feel like it's too much money as I'm really just starting to drink tea.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparative speed of electric kettles
It takes roughly twice as long to boil water in an electric kettle in NA than in Europe.
It's like 90 slower than a 240v kettle and like 5 whole minutes faster than a stovetop kettle.
Discussion about cleaning kettle deposits
Is this mold or rust forming in my electric kettle? Safe to use still?
Why did I let myself worry so long about this haha I have vinegar sitting like 2 feet away from my kettle 😂 thanks again.
Do I need to try with vinegar or something?
Vinegar works best. Happens to my kettle quite often.
Advice on kettle maintenance and descaling
No suggestion on brand but ensure you descale, increases lifespan.
Comparative kettle recommendations
Kettle recommendations with temp control and no gooseneck? And maybe avoid breville tea maker
I think Cuisinart CPK-17C tends to be a lot of people's favorite. I recently got mine few weeks ago, doing fine so far.
Upvoting the Cuisinart. I have one and it's great. Reliable (I think about 5 years old now), temperature control and good capacity.
[this chefman one from costco](https://www.costco.com/chefman-1.8l-digital-precision-electric-kettle-with-tea-infuser.product.100684431.html) is decent, and the tea strainer is fully removable.
Discussion on kettle preferences and alternatives
Personal preference, I tend to use a very cheap kettle and a yuzamashi to cool the water for my green teas (not just Japanese greens, Chinese too).
General thoughts on kettle features and pricing
I like it a lot for when I just want tea right now.
Preference for stovetop kettles over electric
my Le Creuset kettle looks great and has lasted YEARS while still looking brand new.
Discussion on various kettle brands
I think I'll agree with /u/jclim00 that the Hamilton Beach is probably the best in that price range.
I have been so impressed with the kettle that I now have a Breville toaster oven and blender and I have never been disappointed in any of them.
Does temps and steeping times.
yes its expensive, but its pretty nice to have hot water whenever you want

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
General discussion about kettle technology
They make something like an induction hotplate which sells for less than $100 on Amazon.
This is my coffee maker. OK, I'll do tea sometimes too.
Concerns about safety of materials in kettles
Modern clear glass is chemically neutral with all substances. It won't leech anything.
Wrong. SECURA™-brand electric kettles are have 100% stainless interiors, no plastic in contact with the water, and use trusted STRIX™-brand temperature controllers.
Fellow has a silicone seal around the temp sensor in the water, so not 100%.
That is true, I forgot about that. It's like that with 99% of electric kettles with temperature sensors.
Concerns about product quality and longevity
It seems like every kettle I find on the internet is made in China and has terrible reviews.
I find “keep warm” button placement annoying, but kettle still going strong.
Still making a perfect cuppa.
I do wish the water capacity was a tad higher for two big cups of coffee.
General concerns about quality of cheap electric kettles
How shitty or non-shitty are Wal-Mart-y electric kettles over time?
