What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helpful for downhill walking
They are very beneficial on uphills, and most particularly downhills.
They’re so underrated on descending! Downhill walking and running is largely an eccentric exercise and is incredibly demanding on the basic mechanics of our muscle fibres (sliding filament model).
Enhances efficiency on flat terrain
Poles can be SO good on flat land if you use them at an angle and use them to push your body ahead, instead of using them for support.
On flattish ground, they are amazing at propelling you along.
Supports proper posture and gait
I find them useful on the flat as well, but that benefit is much more subtle.
Lightweight and easy to carry
Weighs half as much as two.
Provides additional support on slopes
having a pole on a slope gave me an additional point of contact that gave me some confidence and made me less reliant on keeping my balance.
Adjustable length for different terrains
Give yourself the ability to find the perfect length for you!
It's a trade off.
Comfortable wrist straps
wrist too small for the straps on the trekking pole
This is the correct way to use hiking poles. The weight of the arm presses down on the strap, and the grip of the hand is very light, just for controlling the movement.
Efficient use of trekking poles
The strap will be between your thumb “webbing” and the pole.
Provides stability while hiking
the moment your hands are touching something connected to the ground, your proprioceptive sense can take over and your body/back/leg muscles don't have to work anywhere near as hard to keep you upright.
Hiking poles are mostly just for stability. You can take a little bit of weight off of your feet or push yourself forward a little but the majority of the work is still done by the legs.
Reduces load on legs
Small reductions in the stress on leg muscles and joints does make a huge difference though, which is easily observed simply by reducing or increasing weight of our backpacks.
I’ve never felt mine were too short when set to the right height for me.
Adjustable length is beneficial for proper use
When backpacking, I use set them where my elbow joint is more than 90 degrees, but I don't know the exact angle.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about features preferred in trekking poles
Seems like a solid first option
I never used trekking poles before, Im 190cm / 6ft 3in if that matters, tent requires "about" 120cm, will use them mountain hiking mainly
My Leki aluminum poles with cork handles and flip locks have lasted many years and thru hikes, and tent support
This is the way. My Leki aluminum poles with cork handles and flip locks have lasted many years and
Discussion about personal experiences with trekking poles
i just thru hiked the Long Trail with a stick i found on the first day
Another option - https://mountainking.co.uk/which-poles1/ultralight
Discussion on pole length preferences
the shorter pole may be there to make transferring as you walk easier.
This is to avoid shoulder injury/inflammation.

Discussion about using different tips for trekking poles
Different trekking pole tips for different terrain
Oh, so you're not supposed to just throw all of these away when you buy hiking poles? I kept the rubber tips, just to keep from being stabbed by the tungsten tips.
Rubber tips sound good in theory but the only time I ever tried to use them, the carbide tip just ended up ripping through them.
lets be honest the carbide tips have grip on everything, it might just destroy it in the process

Discussion about the differences between cheap and expensive trekking poles
Not sure what would be the advantage of the expensive option (eg black diamond) compared to the cheap one (eg decathlon).
From my perspective, I would say the most noticeable difference is the locking mechanism.
Performance is equal between them and the CMT poles are much less expensive and come with a variety of tips.
Both have been great for me, so comfortable and I’ve had no issues.
Discussion about budget trekking poles
Budget hiking poles suggestions Hello, I've recently started hiking and have used a pair of hiking poles from the middle of Lidl.
Cascade Mountain Tech. Good quality great price.
Mention of other trekking pole brands
Still going strong & only $36.
Discussion about using one pole vs. two
Regardless if you use just one one, I'd like to hear your reasoning.
I also usually only bring my pole when one of my knees are acting up, so it tends to stay in the hand where it's most useful.
Just think how much more effective your pointing could be with double the poles!
I like having a free hand, especially for my technical trails I grab onto trees and such to help and don't rely as much on the pole.
Discussion about carrying trekking poles on airplanes
I want to know how y’all travel with trekking poles.
we end up checking at least one bag as there are several things we cannot bring in our carry on luggage, including trekking poles, knives or multi-tools, and a few other odds and ends.
TSA tossed them. Not worth the risk, esp if they’re nice poles. Check or ship.
Take a clear contractor bag so it doesn’t look like a bag of trash. Put some duct tape on your pole.
Discussion on pole length recommendations
I have never used poles before and realized I needed some after I was experiencing knee discomfort after hiking downhill.
Z poles are great for two reasons: they’re much easier to attach to your backpack.
Clarification on proper usage of straps
The reason you come in from underneath the loop is so the poles don't fall.
Comparison of hiking poles to ski poles
even just 10-15% load off of our legs make a huge difference
I get the most benefits from trekking poles from support and stabilization when going up or down.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion about other trekking pole brands
Trekking Pole Handle Replacement Hoping someone here might have a suggestion.
How do you like the foxelli poles? I absolutely love their rechargeable headlamps for less consequential stuff like use around the house, camping with the kids, etc.
I plan to buy my first set of trailrunning poles to get aquainted to them for longer races in the future.
Anything Leki is the way to go, in my opinion.
Variety of personal experiences with trekking poles
it was great way to engage the upper body as well.
I dont even get out of bed without trekking poles
Skepticism about the effectiveness of trekking poles
no one was arguing that humans have adapted to walking with sticks in their hands.
