The Black Diamond Trail Sport Trekking Poles are lightweight collapsible aluminum hiking sticks designed to enhance your outdoor adventures, whether hiking, trekking, or camping. Users appreciate the poles' easy adjustability thanks to the FlickLock system, with one reviewer stating, "looks like they made it even easier to adjust the poles with a new FlickLock system." Additionally, they are praised for their sturdy construction and comfort, as reflected in sentiments like, "I find them super comfortable and much prefer the cork handle to plastic." Overall, despite some concerns over the locking mechanism and tip replacement, the product is recommended for its overall performance and durability in its category.

What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Lightweight design
they're also light. If you hike 20,000 steps you're also lifting poles that many times.
It seems like I miss out something, what is it?
Besides being lighter, carbon is also stiffer and will vibrate less which I find more comfortable than aluminum.
Easy to adjust with FlickLock system
looks like they made it even easier to adjust the poles with a new Flik lock system.
I've never had to tighten them even once.
Great shock absorption with carbon fiber
Definitely a fan of these carbon fiber sticks over my aluminum ones because the CF soaks up shock and vibration a lot better.
Great customer service and warranty
So these poles are not up to the task.
Durable and in good condition after heavy use
Had mine 2 years and I have battered them and they are still awesome and in good condition.
Sturdy construction
I've had a pair of BD Distance FL for about 10 years and hundreds of miles and I have not had a problem with them, ever.
Effective storage advice to prevent locking issues
If you store these with the pole collapsed the kevlar strap inside the pole seems to contract and shorten.
I've had mine about a year with no issues.
I used this method, recommended by Black Diamond customer service.
Comfortable grip materials
Personally I don’t care wether they’re carbon or aluminium. I do care about cork handles tho...
Sturdy feel and less vibration while walking
I do notice a difference that the BD poles vibrate less as I walk giving them a sturdier feel.
FlickLock style is preferred over screw locks
Agree that shock types are not worth the extra money. Get good handles and you’ll be happy with whatever the stick looks like.
Don't bother with the anti-shock feature. I've had both and don't notice a significant enough difference to justify it.
Lightweight and portable for traveling
I loved how well they folded up for traveling.
Sturdy construction for reliability
I have not yet snapped the same ones, but all of them were supposed to be sturdier than the Carbon Z.
They hold up pretty well from my experience.
Comfortable grip with ergonomic design
I find them super comfortable and much prefer the cork handle to plastic.
FlickLock adjustability is preferred
I'm tempted by the *Black Diamond Trail Ergo Cork Womens Trekking Poles* which run at around $180 on Wild Earth.
just get the flick lock ones and not the twist locks
Good performance for hiking
Outside of having to replace the tips once, they performed well and I would certainly recommend them especially for the price.
Versatile for both skiing and hiking
Haven't had any issues. Make sure that whatever poles you end up with can take snow baskets for skiing.
I use black diamond ski poles for both. I don't find I need the rubber tip in the summer anyway and the metal end works well on rocks.
I've used my telescoping ski poles as hiking poles and its totally great.
I use the trail ergo cork poles. The aluminum ones.
Strong and durable design
They do feel strong.
Aluminum, while a little heavier is much more durable.

Where it needs some work!

Areas to watch—feedback on possible improvements.
Wearable tips require replacement
The Trail has a carbide tip which can be replaced upon wear or swapped with a rubber end.
Tips do not retain well and require frequent replacement
hated how unreliable the carbons were.
Cables can stretch and plugs may come loose
they are sturdy untill cables stretch and plugs with cables start coming free from inside the pole.
Frequent issues with locking mechanism
Thanks for the tip. I have a pair of these and have had to do some many fixes like this.
I have them and have had this happen - no idea why.
seems a few ppl below have had it happen... maybe a bad batch or environmental factors + you store them collapsed for an extended period of time?
Not worth upgrading from existing working poles
If you already have poles that work, no it's not worth it to upgrade.
Straps can rip and tips may need replacement
Yes, they are prone to snapping and everything Andrew said is accurate, but if you got a pair for $100, I think they would be great to bring on the PCT even if other poles would be more ideal.
Not suitable for long-term use on rugged trails
Best for ultra running and day hiking, and petite backpackers.
Locking mechanism issues
Trekking pole lock slipping I have these black diamond trekking poles and they’ve been great for a while but now if I put a lot of weight on one the lock doesn’t completely hold and it slides down.
I don't have B D poles, but in mine you open the flicklock and then to give it a full turn or two, then click it back down.
I had these poles. You may have had the same issue I had and are not realizing it: the foam handle pulls up to lock the poles in place.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Discussion about Allen wrench mechanism
There's an Allen wrench hidden inside one of the parts.
Comparison of carbon vs aluminum poles
The Black Diamond Alpine Carbon are their carbon trekking poles for people carrying heavy packs.
Grips are more important than the poles themselves
Save on fancy poles. Most important feature on your poles is the grips.
Discussion about the benefits of trekking poles
I 100% recommend poles. I used to think they were for wussies, but after breaking my ankle and getting them out of necessity they have been amazing, even after recovering.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Comparison with other brands
They are the poles I use and so so worth the savings!!
Advice on alternative brands and products
I’ve got a set of Leki collapsible poles that I’ve abused the hell out of and are still running strong.
$40 trekkology poles from amazon. I've had them out numerous times in fairly rugged terrain and they've held up well.
Discussion about upgrading from Cascade Mountain Tech poles
they work great so far!
Discussion about compatibility with shelters
That is a good point. I can say that the 120cm Distance Z pole can be made to wolk with my Z-Pack Duplex/Triplex when released in the pole down position.
Alternatives suggested for budget-conscious buyers
And my premium choice is the Black diamond Alpine carbon Cork.
Chat about discontinued products and availability
I wouldn't be surprised if they're discontinued - it's a niche product and the shipping is very difficult.
Seems like a shame if they did discontinue it as they seem great outside of working out the tip issue and well the hassle of trying to get into a vehicle with them but your supposed to be using them to travel by foot!
Discussion about alternatives and cheaper options
Cascade Mountain Tech poles are much, much cheaper and do the same job those more expensive ones do.
General comparisons between brands
They are lightweight, about 1 lb for the pair, and I got them on sale for $100.
Comparison of brands and recommendations
I've had a go with them and they are amazing and light weight.
