What it does well!

Key strengths users can’t stop talking about.
Helps navigate difficult terrain
they saved me from running into so many god damn spiderwebs.
They’ve become my best friends on the trail! I’d recommend watching some YouTube for pro tips on using the straps and adjusting properly.
Helps prevent falls on steep terrain
I don’t go hiking without them anymore. Saved me from the fall going down the steep rocky path with lots of loose slippery scree.
Oh and they keep me from falling in rivers.
Totally agree. I now always use them in steep terrain, particularly when going off track.
Provides balance and support while hiking
Same. Trekking poles have been game changers for me.
For balance and to support BOTH knees, get trekking poles and use them always and properly.
Highly valued by users for their effectiveness
No need for expensive ones, as others have mentioned. I got mine on Amazon and they’ve taken me hundreds of miles.
Helps with balance and support on steep terrain
Defo a knee saver on long downhills.
Would have been totally screwed without the poles.
Useful for downhill hiking and knee protection
Trekking poles are part of my first aid kit.
Effective for navigating difficult terrain and obstacles
I carry one to use going downhill and knock spider webs 🕸 out of the way on early morning hikes 👌😀.
Convenient for carrying and storing
Many backpacks have a way to store trekking poles in a way that makes them easy to remove/store without taking the backpack off.
They’re annoying on the flats, but I’m not putting my pack down and picking it back up to get rid of them.

Core Power Plays

The specs and strengths that make it shine.
Variety of personal preferences for using trekking poles
This has me worried as I’ll be renting and using trekking poles for my first time in Iceland this September as a solo traveler 😅
Backpacking? Always. Well, my tent needs them and for 85% of miles so do I.
Variety of personal preferences for hiking equipment
They help you keep a rhythm going when hiking, help on inclines and descents, water crossings are easier, could be used to set up a tent.
They are like new. The cascades are rubbish. You get what you pay for.
They’re one of my favorite pieces of gear. I went through a pair of the popular Costco brand, and another pair before I bought these.
The BD's are tanks. I like being able to fully collapse them and put them in my backpack.

Buyer’s Cheat Sheet

What to check before you click ‘Add to Cart.’
Discussion on trekking pole price differences
Not sure what would be the advantage of the expensive option (eg black diamond) compared to the cheap one (eg decathlon).
From my perspective, I would say the most noticeable difference is the locking mechanism.
Performance is equal between them and the CMT poles are much less expensive and come with a variety of tips.
Both have been great for me, so comfortable and I’ve had no issues.
General discussion on the value of hiking sticks
Have any of you regretted buying one? Do you find them more annoying to carry around than useful?
Transportation difficulty of a walking staff compared to trekking poles
The real killer is the difficulty of transporting a giant stick about the place vs poles.
Discussion on mobility aid regulations for carry-on luggage
I'm wondering if staff will allow this specific mobility aid onto a plane for carry on luggage.
Hiking sticks with the metal spikes, 'for hiking' are absolutely not allowed through the checkpoint.
This originally has a metal tip but is replaced by a rubber tip.
I have always used a walking/treking stick with a rubber tip over the steel tip and never had a problem through customs.
Discussion on value comparison of hiking poles
Not as good as a pair of $150 Leki or Black Diamonds, but quite awesome for the asking price.
That backup pair is still in the box after 5 years.
Probably difference in weight and rigidity I suppose.
These are hands down the best bang for your buck out there.
Discussion on pricing and value of trekking poles
I cannot see any obvious advantages on the pricier pairs.
Poles have never been a priority purchase, I have Walmart $15 poles that have taken me through most of the AT.
General discussion on testing gear before extensive use
None of the advice here is as good as testing your own gear.
Great way to practice your setup and try everything out yet still have an out without potentially being in trouble on the trail.
Encouragement for trying out new gear in the outdoors
You don't have to win the ultralight contest in order to enjoy backpacking, but it really helps a lot to get your pack weight down however you are able.
Just go! Especially in the summer, risks are low.
Advice on borrowing or renting gear to save costs
go hike! You'll learn what you need most by just going out and doing it.
Discussion on TSA regulations for carrying trekking poles
Airport security : Collapsible carbon fiber trekking poles or alternative aluminum support poles? Which in your experience is most likely to go through airport security in carry on?
Hiking Poles **Carry On Bags: No** **Checked Bags: Yes**
The risk is not worth it to me.
Your options, at this point, are to either mail your poles to your destination, or to buy the aluminum support poles.

Cautionary Callouts

Know the pitfalls before they catch you off guard.
Discussion on the effectiveness of trekking poles vs walking staff
I feel like the trekking poles offer much more stability, and even help you with keeping your pace, particularly on steep ascents.
If you need more stability on steep descents and rocky areas, go for a walking staff it's longer and provides better support.
Concerns about locking mechanisms of trekking poles
The issue to consider is the locking mechanism, especially if you're using them for shelter.
